Newsletter 83 Minerva Rd Manifold Heights, 3218 Ph: 5229 8298 Fax: 5223 1553 www.hsmanifoldheights.catholic.edu.au Term 3 Week 2 Thursday 23 July, 2015 From our Principal… Hello Everyone, Firstly thank you for the positive responses towards last week’s newsletter they were nice to hear and yes I know it was a bit long but I will work on that. Telecommunications Petition You may have received a SMS regarding a petition the school is completing regarding the proposal of a planning permit to build a Telecommunications Facility in the Geelong West cemetery, near the St. Joseph’s football oval. There are many reasons to oppose this permit; however the main concern we have is the conduction of electro - magnetic radiation. Many studies have been conducted researching the effects electro - magnetic radiation has on the health of human beings, many of them appear to be inconclusive. However the fact that many do state a risk and that research has differing opinion, we feel a cautious action needs to be taken. The proposed facility will be less than 300 metres away from our school ground and it will be in operation for 24 hours a day; we believe it is too close to our school and a more appropriate site needs to be considered. Our school community is opposing the permit and has submitted a letter explaining our concerns. A petition from our school community will also be sent to the City of Greater Geelong Development Offices adding weight to our objection. The permit was posted during the school holidays and any letters of concern are to be delivered before 4:00 pm on Friday 24th July. So we need the petition completed by Friday afternoon. If you can drop into the office and sign it that would be great. School Improvement Surveys Every year school communities complete a survey that provides information about how their school is performing over many different subscribed criteria. This survey information is collated and compared with other schools and identifies our schools strengths and weaknesses. Over the past we have chosen a random cohort of people to complete the survey. Last year we chose 70 families to take part in the survey and we only had 24 surveys completed. This year we would like to encourage all families to take part in the survey which can be completed online or via a hard copy which can be returned to school. We believe with the more responses we receive, the clearer the results should be. The staff as well as students from Year 3 - 6 will also complete surveys and we will get their perspectives as well. Each family will receive an envelope with the details on how to complete the survey. The survey may take about 40 minutes to complete and it isn’t meant to be a demanding task, usually your first response will be the most accurate. We are hopeful we will get a high return of completed surveys and that the indicators will give us a clear picture about our school. Please take the time to follow the instructions in your envelope and complete the survey. It is an anonymous survey and it can give you a chance to have a voice about Holy Spirit School. Tuesday 28th July is a special day for our Preps as they celebrate their first 100 days of being at school. Congratulations to them! Religion This week’s Gospel reading is taken from John 6:1-15 - Jesus feeds five thousand. This reading is well known and is presented as one of Jesus’ miracles where he feeds over five thousand people with five loaves of barley bread and two fish that were given to him from a small boy. Everyone has their fill and there are twelve baskets of food left over. The interest for me in this reading is Jesus asks one of the disciples ‘Where can we buy bread for these people to eat?’ Jesus knows very well they can’t buy enough food for so many people at such short notice and with so little denarii to pay for it. So why does he ask this question, why does he challenge the disciples to find food to feed all these people? What does this question mean for us today? I guess if we look at the world and the unfair distribution of food amongst the human population we can also be challenged, like the disciples, on ‘Where can we buy / provide enough food for these people to eat?” That is the determining thought, another social justice challenge from Jesus. The governments, (which we elect) of the world need to be more responsive to feeding all people and as human beings it is our own personal response that will count. “Food for thought”.
