Unit Title: Cell Energy

LE Biology
Marking Period 2 Week 17
Unit Title: Cell Energy
Essential Questions:
What is the source of energy used by
organisms and what is the basic
pathway for the movement of this
energy?
What is photosynthesis and what types
of organisms perform this process?
Major Understandings:
The source of energy in living systems is the sun. This radiant energy is
absorbed by plants and stored in glucose which is then converted to usable
energy.
Autotrophic organisms use energy from the sun to convert inorganic
reactants into organic compounds through the process of photosynthesis
within the chloroplast.
What is cell respiration and why do
living organisms perform this process?
During the process of cell respiration cells release the energy stored in
chemical bonds of organic molecules and store this energy in molecules of
ATP.
What is ATP and what cellular
organelle is responsible for its
construction?
ATP is a molecule made in the mitochondria and used to store energy which
is used by the cell to perform life functions.
Oxygen and glucose, the products of photosynthesis, are used as the

from cellular respiration are used as reactants in photosynthesis.
