What is OCW?
The Organization for Campus Women (OCW) is an organization for ALL persons affiliated with UW-L: academic
staff, classified staff, and faculty. The objectives of OCW are to promote equal opportunity for all women, serve
as a vehicle for communication among women at UW-L, and to collaborate with other locate, state, and national
organizations concerned with improving the status of women.
OCW has an elected board which governs the overall organization. This steering committee is comprised of three
representatives from each of the three employment categories as well as the chairs of each of the various
committees.
Membership in OCW requires only an annual $5.00 dues payment which helps support programming efforts.
Committee service is also encouraged though not required. Join us!!
Volunteers Needed – News Horizon’s Spaghetti Dinner
In keeping with OCW’s Mission Statement “to conduct annual service projects to enhance the status of women,”
OCW has agreed to help New Horizons with their annual fund-raiser this spring. Volunteers are needed to help
at the Spaghetti Dinner and Silent Auction on Thursday, April 15 from 4:45 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Moose Lodge,
1932 Ward Avenue, La Crosse.
At least a dozen volunteers are needed to help with serving beverages, busing tables and washing dishes. All
volunteers receive a free spaghetti dinner and have the opportunity to bid on silent auction items.
This is a great way to promote OCW to the community and socialize with other campus women, all for a great

Thank you to Betsy Morgan for bringing to our attention this insightful article from the Chronicle of Higher
Education. Through her own experiences, Paula Krebs, chairwoman of the department of English at Wheaton
College in Massachusetts, gives us her personal perspective on the hierarchy of campus personnel through her
own experiences. "The Faculty-Staff Divide"

Talented Women of UW-L: Anne Galbraith
Our February/March article on talented women of UW-L, features Anne Galbraith. Anne
has been at UW-L since 1998 and is an associate professor in the Department of Biology.
Besides teaching, advising, mentoring, and doing research in the Biology Department,
she also wears the hat of current President of the Organization for Campus Women. Anne knew she wanted to teach from a very young age. Playing school with her younger
sister was a normal childhood activity. You can probably guess who got to be the teacher
all the time! However her aspirations changed continually, from wanting to teach
younger students to college students. This led her from an education degree to a B.S.
degree from the Department of Biology at Briar Cliff College in Sioux City, Iowa. She then
obtained her Ph.D., from the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Iowa, Iowa City.
Once her Ph.D. was completed she ventured to Denver, Colorado, to complete a post doctoral at the University of
Colorado Health Science Center. It was in Denver that Anne learned a very important life skill, not to blush when
working within a department where she was the only woman. She would also give this advice to any other
women in a field where women are the minority. Anne is one of those people who religiously follows the quote,
“laughter is the best medicine”. She is always ready for a good laugh. How many other professors have Homer
Simpson links on their web page?
When asked, what is the one thing she likes best about her teaching position? she replied, “That is a hard one
because I have two. First is the students, who are really good people. I feel like a mom watching them progress
from freshmen to seniors but without having the actual responsibility of their real mom. The second is my
department. I am very fortunate to work in a good department with the colleagues I have at UW-L”. Her response
to the least favorite thing associated with her position is probably shared by many others on this campus –
“grading!”
In Anne’s other life outside of campus, she keeps pretty busy with a 17 year old daughter Nikki who is a junior at
West Salem High School and 6 year old daughter Alex who is in kindergarten. Her husband Rob runs his own
business, Rob’s Furniture Repair, out of their home. New Books @ Murphy Library By and About Women
