Summer reading provides students with an opportunity to activate their academic skills and become a launch pad for critical thinking at the beginning of
the school year.
This summer, we ask that parents would read at least one book from this
list with their children over the summer. It is our hope that you will
make reading a part of your family’s summer. It is not just about keeping up
with the skill of decoding but it is to continue to work with the meanings and
ideas that authors have offered to us and to grow in our ability to articulate our
own thoughts and ideas. Our thinking and writing cannot mature without
growth in our language.
Some ideas to help things go smoothly:
Have a set time each day for reading.
Choose the topic of highest interest for your child.
Have thoughtful questions ready to spur discussions about the book.
Read portions of the book with them.
Visit the library to explore books of interest.
Incoming Kindergarteners will be required to complete an oral retelling.
Oral retellings will be completed in class during the first two weeks of
school.

Summer reading provides students with an opportunity to activate their
academic skills and become a launch pad for critical thinking at the
beginning of the school year.
This summer, students are required to read two books. Students involved in
our Pre AP classes will read the required books listed, as well as a selfselected title from the “Summer Reading Self-Selected Title List” provided.
The attached book list is available to allow students to have some choice in
the books they read. Some novels tend to be more designed for mature
audience than others; content and reading levels vary.
It is our recommendation that you choose a novel with the guidance of your
parents. Common Sense Media is a good website to help families determine
the age appropriateness of a novel.
It is important to note that your teacher may not necessarily recommend
each of the novels for everyone. The list provides a wide variety of choices
so you and your family can determine a best fit for you.
