M L R While you might have to reach for an atlas to determine that Isaiah is speaking about Galilee, today’s first reading (part of which was read at Christmas) is prophe c of Jesus’ future ministry in that province. The light that brings salva on and rejoicing is, ul mately, Christ. Libera on is the theme: libera on from both ignorance (“darkness”) and sin (the “yoke”). As Isaiah iden fies a place, so Paul describes an a tude: the a tude that develops, even among good people, of equa ng their own will with the common good. This always brings dissension, and so it has done in Corinth. Paul will not allow this; we are all members of “Christ’s party.” The gospel is not to divide us. Ma hew quotes from Isaiah in today’s Gospel, presen ng Jesus as the fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecies. The theme is “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand” (Ma hew 4:17). To spread this message, Jesus begins to select disciples, four of whom we meet today: Peter, Andrew, James, and John. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. G F S C D F J D Dear Brothers and Sisters: I have been reading a book by a noted liturgical scholar, and he offered an observa on that just as we have the cultural phenomenon “sixty is the new forty” in terms of change in lifestyle and emerging new percep ons of aging and ac vity, so too do we seem to have a new phenomenon concerning a endance at Sunday Eucharist that might be phrased as “weekly is the new monthly.” In other words, there is a percep on among people of today that a ending Sunday Eucharist on an intermi ent basis, perhaps once or twice a month, is a valid and legi mate prac ce. Actually, nothing could be further from the truth. The law of the Church is very clear: we are required to a end Mass “each and every Sunday and holy day of obliga on.” We are excused only for serious reasons, for example, illness or the care of family members who cannot be le alone, or when weather (snow and ice for the elderly) makes it unsafe or impossible to get out of the house or apartment. Please note that sport schedules, social obliga ons, and things of that nature are not legi mate reasons; we must make the me to par cipate at Mass even if it might be inconvenient to do so or if it might require rearranging our schedules. The Catechism of the Catholic Church is clear about the seriousness of this obliga on: “Those who deliberately fail in this obliga on commit a grave sin” (#2181). I realize it is not fashionable to say such a thing these days, but it is nonetheless true: missing Sunday Eucharist without a valid objec ve reason is a sin (and it is something that should be confessed in Confession). Sunday Eucharist is the founda on of all Chris an prac ce. Par cipa on in the communal celebra on of Sunday Eucharist is a tes mony of belonging to and of being faithful to Jesus and to his Church. It is the “source and summit” of the Chris an life. Because of this, we are required to a end Mass each and every Sunday and holy day of obliga on. Now, let me make this clear: it is NOT a sin to miss Mass if you are sick, or if you have to take care of someone who cannot be le alone, or if severe weather makes it dangerous or impossible to get there (so, if you are 85years of age and use a walker and could not get to Mass because of snow and ice, you did NOT commit a sin ‐ do not come to Confession for that reason!). Lacking some serious valid objec ve reason, though, we are obligated to a end ‐ period. C S W 22, 2017 Good Shepherd Catholic Academy will celebrate Catholic Schools Week from Sunday, January 29th through Saturday, February 4th. M L Join faithful from across the Diocese of Brooklyn and March for Life on Friday, January 27, in Washington, D.C. This year, in the Diocese of Brooklyn, over 8 buses from parishes and schools are expected t0 make the trip. The march on the mall follows with hundreds of thousands of people from across the United States. Seats are s ll available on buses leaving from parishes across the Diocese. For informa on about ge ng a seat on a bus, please contact Clendy Calderon at 718.281.9544 or email her at [email protected] As a community of faith here at Good Shepherd, we need to recommit ourselves to weekly Mass a endance. I know that in many ways I am “preaching to the choir,” as the cliché goes, in that if you are reading this, you are probably a weekly Mass goer and this does not apply to you ‐ although maybe it does. Monthly must not become the new norm if we are to maintain our iden ty as Catholic Chris ans. I make a special appeal to parents to fulfill the obliga on they willingly undertook at their child’s bap sm to raise their children in the prac ce of the faith – to make weekly a endance at Sunday Eucharist a non‐nego able aspect of their family life.
