We are very grateful for all the kindness and support Temple Israel has received over the years as a part of this great city. As an expression of gratitude, we are partnering with The Belmont Heights Community Association and the Belmont Heights United Methodist Church in organizing a day of neighborhood service on Sunday, February 22. We have organized over a dozen opportunities that day to work with our friends and neighbors in an afternoon of community service. Examples of the afternoon’s volunteer activities include: landscape improvements at local schools; painting rooms at area social service agencies; assembling hygiene kits for those in need; park cleanups; and collecting food for the hungry. A complete list of volunteer activities and schedule for the day can be found at the registration site: www.tinyurl.com/BelmontHeightsMADD2015 Board of Directors 2014 - 2015 Jonathan Kass Seth Goldman President Secretary Joanne Levy Steven Keiles VP Ritual Practices Treasurer Deborah Lewis Amy Lipeles VP Education Past President David Philips Mark Beizer VP Membership Foundation President Ed Green VP Programming Evan Braude, Rick Burney, Leslie Ciletti, Martha De Young, Deborah Fabricant, Joyce Feldman, Gail Freedman, Steve Gordon, Danny Levy, Dove Mayo, Barry Mitnick, Joel Perler, David Tillman, Frank Weinberger President’s Message A Timely Moment to be Counted By Jonathan Kass, Temple President We’ve talked in this space for the last few months about the great things happening here at Temple Israel. We’ve updated the Cantor search, which at this time is still a work in very active progress; we’ve reviewed updates on our strategic plan, which reinforce the positive momentum carrying us into 2015. We’ve talked several times about reimagining what it means to be a ‘member’ of Temple Israel, and ways we can become even more inviting and open to our local greater Long Beach community. And elsewhere in the bulletin, we’ve shared reminders of our upcoming congregational trip to Israel this summer, and the great opportunity to join your fellow congregants on an exploration of our shared heritage up close and in person. As I’m sure many of you are aware, these are ‘interesting times’ for the state of Israel, even in the face of relative calm on the military front. Within Israel itself, there is ongoing debate about many topics familiar to us here in Long Beach – gender equality and religious freedom, to name just a couple. While many of these internal Israeli issues may seem a bit remote to us here in greater Long Beach, there is an opportunity right now for each of us to have a voice in that dialog. I’d like to share a word from the Association of Reform Zionists in America, ARZA, regarding an important election that is underway now through early April: It took Queen Esther quite a while to understand that she had to make her own Jewish voice heard. And luckily, Esther did just that. She proceeded to save the Jewish people in her time and we celebrate that sacred moment at Purim, which this year falls on March 4 and 5. The role of women has changed significantly since Queen Esther’s time and today, we see women actively participate in all aspects of Jewish life, both here and in Israel. In Israel, women serve leadership roles, not only in the armed services and Knesset but also in religious life. There are now 42 Reform (Israel Movement for Progressive and Reform Judaism) congregations in Israel in which women can be Temple presidents, read Torah, and lead their communities as rabbis and cantors. Reform Rabbis trained in Israel, both women and men, lead women to Bat Mitzvah, guide them in egalitarian wedding ceremonies and allow and encourage women to recite Kaddish for their loved ones at those moments of grief and loss. A few young women have even become Bat Mitzvah at the Kotel, the Western Wall. But those opportunities are still too few and far between. This year, we Reform Jews have an opportunity to effect Israeli religious life and generate resources to grow the Reform Jewish presence in Israel by voting and participating in the World Zionist Congress Elections. When we vote, we stand tall, knowing we join with Queen Esther and make our voices heard for the future of Judaism and especially Judaism in Israel. Vote for Greater Religious Equality in Israel and VOTE TODAY. How? Go to www.reformjews4israel.org/vote. Register and vote the ARZA-Representing Reform Judaism in Israel slate in the World Zionist Congress elections. Vote online for the future of Israeli Jewish life. When? NOW! WHY? Help create a dynamic Reform Judaism is Israel, that includes the voices of women and men; those born Jewish and those who have chosen Judaism. Generate funds for education, youth work, social justice and pastoral care for the Israeli Reform movement. Strengthen Reform Judaism’s call for the values we cherish and will grant the Reform movement influence in the quality of Jewish religious life in Israel. I hope you will take a moment to go to the ARZA website, review the information about the election, and have your voice counted in this important process – I know I will. Beyond Israel, of course, January was a difficult month for the global Jewish community as a whole. The horrific attacks in Paris reignited concerns regarding modern anti-Semitism in Europe - and how easily it is intermingled with the new breed of terrorism, perpetrated by radicalized locals. I know we all felt the shock and sadness of that event. I join with all of you in praying for peace for the families of the victims, and wisdom for the world leaders grappling with these threats. Temple Israel has formed a Security & Disaster Preparedness Committee. If you would like to be a part of this effort to make our Temple as prepared as possible for various events, please email Ed Green at [email protected] and join our efforts! 3 Sabbath Fellowship / Foundation Sabbath Fellowship Program & Service By Ann Martin While every Shabbat at Temple Israel is special, the Sabbath Fellowship Service and luncheon is no exception. It is held on the first Saturday morning of every month. The service begins at 10:30 a.m., followed by a brief kiddish, and then we enter the social hall for a full course, delicious lunch prepared in the kitchen by the wonderful Lisa Rosen and her volunteers. Following lunch, there is always terrific entertainment (booked by Ann Martin). This is a special program for senior adults in the congregation and in the community. It was started by Rabbi Wolli Kaelter, of blessed memory, many years ago. Volunteers who are Temple members help serve the meals and beverages (Fred Masback has been volunteering for many years serving the hot beverages), and a couple of b’nai mitzvah students participate for their Mitzvah Project. More volunteers are always needed to help serve the food. Please call the Temple Office if you would like to volunteer. Our entertainment for this program can range from professional pianists to vocalists, impressionists, to allaround entertainers. All this - for only $5.00! It is, by far, the best value in town! In December, Kendra Cogert and the Temple Israel Youth Choir performed at the luncheon and it was a wonderful, joyous experience. On February 7, Barry Cogert will be performing with his Jazz Angels, young students learning the Art of Jazz with their instruments. I have heard them perform, and they are really amazing. In March, we will have Gordon Lentzner’s Shtetl Menshen Klezmer Band. Save the Date L’Dor Vador Generation to Generation The Temple Israel Foundation Board of Trustees acknowledges our generous donors at a Shabbat Dinner Friday, April 17 at 5:30 p.m. followed by our Got Shabbat Service at 7:00 p.m. with Kendra Cogert and The Shabbatones More information coming soon Sabbath Fellowship Program & Service featuring Temple Israel’s Barry Cogert & The Jazz Angels Saturday, February 7th~10:30 a.m. at Temple Israel The Jazz Angels program is an educational musical experience in jazz that is as cool as the music itself. It consists of musicians, ages 9-17, who perform the only true American musical art form of Jazz; its blue notes, clever improvisation, funky syncopation and swingin’ grooves. This is a performance not to be missed! This program includes live entertainment, a brief Shabbat Service and lunch ($5). While at the Kallah, we attended a NFTY SoCal regional meeting called an asefah, during which important decisions were made for our region. This month, ANDI will once again lead games and crafts during the oneg after Family Services on Friday, February 6. We are excited to share that our outstanding ANDI Advisor Kara Liu and three teens from Temple Israel, Miriam Berro Krugman, Isaac Collins, and Maxwell Liu, will attend the National NFTY Convention in Atlanta, February 13-16. We can’t wait for the trip. We know that it will open our eyes to what others are doing elsewhere in NFTY. Finally, we are selling ANDI t-shirts. $15 for a crew neck and $20 for a v-neck. It is a story about journeys into a life of holiness. Every year Temple Israel conducts an Introduction to Judaism class, which offers those not born into Judaism a portal into a life of spiritual and ethical meaning framed by the wisdom of Jewish tradition. It is a profoundly transforming experience, not only for those who take the class but also for all of us as we are inspired by their sense of spiritual renewal through Judaism. One young woman who took the class said: “I was a seed. With Judaism I’ve become a rose.” Through this regular column, Journeys to Judaism, come to know the rich and vibrant garden that is blossoming here at Temple Israel through our Introduction to Judaism program. ~ Rabbi Steven Moskowitz Our Journey to Judaism By Timu Gallien I am a converted Jew; I have always been Jewish, both are true. When I was eight years old, my (unaffiliated Protestant) mother bought a can of fake spray snow for Christmas. I promptly painted a large format Star of David, on the living room picture window that faced the neighborhood. That same year, I was invited to a sleep over at my classmate Rebecca’s house. Picture removed When I met Rebecca, I knew we were for web the same, but different. She felt like Timu Gallien part of me, something was profoundly familiar. I was deeply connected to her (my oldest friend of this life, Mahima, has never let me forget this fact). I had moved quite a lot and was perpetually the new kid in school, the sleep over was a proffered invitation. We had pizza, there was no pepperoni. I simply could not understand why there would be no salty goodness atop the pizza. Rebecca was Jewish, ‘we don’t eat pork’. I regaled my father for days about this vexing divide between Rebecca and me. My father finally raised his voice and said ‘some people don’t eat pork, enough’, apparently it was time to drop the subject. I made my way through life. Jews were ever present, in every epoch, as teachers, friends, and trusted counselors. I felt the call of something that I was [apparently] not. If you are Jewish born to a non-Jewish family it is quite challenging. I was raised Lutheran which is a very nice religion to be raised in, simultaneously erudite and down-to-earth, but absolutely not me. I argued incessantly and was nearly (truth… actually I think I was) banished from the young adults group. Numerous constructs caused soulful dyspepsia. The trinity was antithetical. What?!? Jesus, the Holy Spirit?!? I have the God thing, I got that, but those other players don’t make sense to me. As a young adult I moved to the Chicago area and found a home in the (significantly Jewish) near north suburbs. Ambition focused achievement rather than spirituality, though every Rosh HaShanah I was gently reminded by Tashlich. I wondered. Years of ambition resulted in a relocation to the Los Angeles area. Thirteen years ago, I moved to Long Beach and lived two blocks north of Temple Israel. I passed Temple Israel, literally, hundreds of times. I wondered, but did nothing about it, I simply walked by. Many moves later, life events conspired and availed a gradschool opportunity at UC Irvine that brought me back to Long Beach. A small advert in the Grunion caught my attention. I took the Taste of Judaism (yet again), this time at TI, and finally found my way home. A few years later, at the Mikvah, it was confirmed; I am a floater not a sinker. P.S. Rebecca is now a Rabbi, married to a Rabbi. Torah Study With Rabbi Moskowitz Saturday Mornings 8:45 - 10:00 a.m. Rabbi Moskowitz facilitates this participatory weekly Torah study. Each week, this enthusiastic group examines the parashat hashavuah (weekly Torah portion) and discusses its meaning and relevance through the use of traditional commentaries and personal reflection. This Torah study is for everyone. No previous background or knowledge of Hebrew is required. Come one time or every week! The Story Continues: Prophets & Proverbs Thursdays at 10:15 a.m. Facilitator: Joan Leb The Tanakh class that began in October, 2013 has studied the history of Israel from the entry into the Promised Land through the return from the Babylonian exile as written in Joshua, Judges, Samuel, Kings, and Chronicles. The group is now studying the Prophets. Since this is a lay-led group, everyone will have an opportunity to participate. No previous knowledge or experience is necessary; just a desire to learn. Come and join us. 7 INTERFAITH GREETINGS by Roni Love, member of the South Coast Interfaith Council It is with great sadness and loss that I write this month’s column, yet at the same time, it is with great joy, appreciation and love. Stephanie Bussi was my friend; a person I greatly admired and respected. She gave of herself to those in need, even while in pain…when many others would have said, “No, I cannot.” She just never gave up. Stephanie gave voice to the voiceless by promoting disability rights, advocating for fair housing, educating us on the humanity and plight of the homeless, and so much more. She stood as a beacon for true interfaith understanding. How better to communicate the interconnectedness of all peoples, all religions, all conditions than by involving oneself in the lives of those who perhaps most experience alienation, discrimination, loss and separation. In 2011, Stephanie was honored at the South Coast Interfaith Council’s Annual Assembly with its Spotlight Award highlighting the work and service of amazing people in our local community who make outstanding accomplishments by bringing about peace and unity among people of different faiths and cultures. The following is what Milia Islam Majeed, the SCIC’s Executive Director, said that night when presenting Stephanie with this esteemed award. Stephanie A. Bussi is a retired Occupational Therapist from New York where she practiced O.T. at Hebrew Hospital. In California she practiced at St. Francis Medical Center until M.S. led to her retirement. That, however, increased her volunteerism! She was awarded the Alpert Jewish Community Center’s CHAI Award for Outstanding Service, is involved with Edison Elementary School Site Council, VIPS (Volunteer in Public Schools), and was PTO treasurer. She sits on the Accessibility Advisory Committee for LA’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority, is delegate to Californians for Disability Rights (CDR), is secretary/treasurer to the Beach-Wood Chapter of CDR as well as contributing writer to its newsletter, is on the Board of Directors for Housing Long Beach - working to maintain and increase housing stock for low income residents of LB and educating residents on the Downtown Community Plan, is Temple Israel’s Homelessness Task Force Chair, helping implement the Temple’s and Drop-In-Center/Urban Community Outreach’s partnership by initiating Temple Israel’s service to the DIC on Christmas Day. Stephanie’s passing has created a hole in the heart of our community, a hole that cannot be filled. We have all been blessed by her presence in our lives. The exhibition “Light & Noir: Exiles and Émigrés in Hollywood, 1933–1950” highlights the émigré actors, directors, writers, and composers who were refugees from Nazi persecution in Europe—exploring the origins of their exclusion from the German film industry and focusing on their subsequent contributions to American cinema and culture. Different genres, in which the European émigrés were especially productive, such as the exile film, the anti-Nazi film, film noir, and comedy, are highlighted. Well-known films are presented alongside new discoveries using film footage, concept drawings, costumes, posters, photographs, and memorabilia to tell the story of Hollywood’s formative era through the lens of the émigré experience. “Light & Noir” demonstrates how the experiences of exodus and exile affected the lives and work of émigrés in many different ways. It is a story of immigration, acculturation, and innovation that intersects with the flourishing of Hollywood as an American cultural phenomenon. Our morning session will focus on the poignant issue of end of life through the lens of Jewish literature and poetry. After brunch, Rabbi Cutter will guide us through an ethics-oriented session, one that captures our year’s focus on science and spirituality. What is the role of spirituality in the face of the increasing capacity of medicine to intervene at the threshold of death? Alternatively, what does Judaism say about the quality of life versus the extent of life? Cost: $12/Shabbat brunch Please RSVP for lunch to Charmaine at [email protected]
