Letter from Your BBB
Better Business Bureau Denver/Boulder (BBB) had a landmark year in 2012
as we, along with 113 other BBBs, celebrated the 100-year-anniversary as
a national organization. As one of the largest BBBs in the country, we saw
steady growth in BBB accreditation, with more than 7,900 total Accredited
Businesses—including 93 that have been accredited more than 30 years. These
businesses support the mission of our organization, as well as, uphold the eight BBB
Standards for Trust.
Locally, consumers accessed more than 2.8 million business reviews and, by the end
of the year, we resolved 24,299 complaints. We closed 265 investigations, provided
assistance on more than 53,000 incoming calls and, with more than 24 million
impressions through local media partnerships, proved BBB’s ever-relevant value to the
public continues to be strong.
When we identify problematic industries, we work with leaders from those industries,
government agencies, regulatory organizations, businesses and consumers to
collectively identify solutions to help our community. In 2012 we continued our work with
the Colorado Attorney General, local District Attorney offices, the FBI, Public Utilities
Commission, Department of Regulatory Agencies, Secretary of State, United States
Postal Inspector and other agencies to protect consumers and businesses across the
community.

Our Foundation provides services dedicated to specific communities that are more
vulnerable to consumer fraud. In 2012, BBB provided dozens of programs for military
families, seniors, youth and the Spanish-speaking community, on issues including wise
spending, identify theft, avoidance of scams, smart consumer tips and others.
As our community values integrity more than ever, we look forward to 2013 and the
upcoming years as leaders of marketplace trust.
Best regards,
Heinz G. Buschang , Ph .D.

The Strength of the BBB Brand
BBB’s mission is to be the leader in marketplace trust and the services for consumers and business
are constantly growing. BBBs began as ‘Vigilance Committees’ of Advertising Clubs in 1912, established
to correct abuses in advertising. BBB Denver/Boulder opened in 1951 and now there are 113 BBBs across
the nation and Canada serving more than 400,000 Accredited Businesses and millions of people and
companies. The BBB brand has matured in its age and BBB continues to evolve to meet the needs of today’s
community. This is evident in our programs, services and outreach initiatives throughout the 12 counties we
serve.

Our message to the community is clear: “Check with BBB before doing business!” For the second consecutive
year, the number of complaints filed with our office decreased (by 6.7%), while the number of reviews
provided on organizations increased (by 36.7%), demonstrating that our encouragement to “check first” is
resonating with the public by helping consumers work with reliable companies.
Our strong presence in the media helped BBB deliver its message to both businesses and consumers. BBB
regularly appears on local television and radio, as well as print media including local publications, business
journals, newspapers and bus advertising. We publish the BBB Community Guide four times a year reaching
80,000 consumers every quarter. Just last year, your BBB had 1,967 earned media stories and mentions.
BBB’s social media presence continues to rise with 1,195 likes to our Facebook page and 2,122 Twitter
followers as of the end of 2012.
It is increasingly important to consumers to do business with
trustworthy organizations. A 2007 Princeton study showed
that 70% of those surveyed prefer to do business with a BBB
Accredited Business. Helping consumers reach our ethical
organizations, BBB provides Accredited Businesses with a dynamic
BBB logo for use on their website, which links consumers directly to
a Business Review on denver.bbb.org. In 2012, there were 100,549
dynamic seal clicks from consumers—that’s a lot of checking
to ensure the company they are dealing with is, in fact, a BBB
Accredited Business!

“I want to let you know that the BBB works both ways. You weed
out the bad businesses, as well as help the ethical businesses. We
met our largest customer through the BBB. This customer said they
called the BBB for the Accredited Businesses in our field. We met
with them, bid on their job, gave them a list of satisfied customers
and we won the bid. Thank you.” Dave Donaldson, Plant Man

The Value of Your BBB
Your BBB is a private, nonprofit organization that provides services and
programs to assist consumers, businesses, donors and charities. BBB
encourages honest trade practices, effective dispute resolution and
charity accountability.
What does this mean to our community of consumers and businesses?
Together, BBB Denver/Boulder and its BBB Foundation serve the
nearly three million people and 100,000 businesses in our community.
As one of the four BBBs that serves all of Colorado, we are proud to
be a resource, advocate, leader, advisor, enforcer and partner in the
community. Here are a few ways BBB fulfills these roles:
Denver Mayor Michael B. Hancock,
BBB BUSINESS
Keynote Speaker at 2012 Torch Awards.
REVIEWS AND
CHARITY REPORTS - Before doing business with a company
or donating to a charity, we encourage the public to ‘Start
with Trust’ and check with BBB first for free information on

Businesses: BBB Denver/Boulder maintains approximately
60,000 BBB Business Reviews on area businesses. These
reviews give information about a company’s rating, complaint
history, advertising concerns and basic background
information.
Charities: The BBB Charity Review program exists to promote accountability in the nonprofit sector and help
donors make wise giving decisions. BBB Charity Reports detail whether or not the organization meets BBB’s
20 Standards for Charity Accountability based on information about its finances,
fundraising and informational materials, governance and oversight and overall
effectiveness.
BBB ACCREDITATION - BBB Accreditation raises the level of ethics in the
business community and helps consumers and donors choose trustworthy
organizations with which to interact. BBB Accredited Businesses and Charities
uphold the Standards for Trust and support BBB’s free public services and
accreditation monitoring by paying annual dues. The BBB logo is authorized only
for Accredited Business use and is a highly recognizable and trademarked symbol
that is synonymous with trust. We saw steady growth in the number of BBB Accreditations from 2011 to 2012.
As of December 31, 2012, there were 7,906 Accredited Businesses in the Denver/Boulder area!

In 2012, BBB accreditation of 49 businesses was revoked due to failure to maintain one or more Standards for
Trust. This demonstrates BBB’s requirement that all Accredited Businesses maintain and uphold each of the
eight standards throughout the year.

DISPUTE RESOLUTION - BBB’s complaint processing services are free to the public. BBB acts as a neutral
third party to assist consumers and businesses resolve disputes and encourage the business to make a
good-faith effort, within reason, to resolve the issues raised by the complainant. In 2012, BBB launched the
publishing of complaint detail which allows the public to view both sides of the story.
Also launched in 2012 was our ‘Love Letter’ program, which gives consumers and businesses the opportunity
to provide feedback on their dispute resolution experience. We received nearly 800 testimonials praising our
dispute resolution service, including the following from a consumer: “BBB gave me an outlet to scream my
frustration when I felt defeated. I was empowered [by BBB] to get the fair treatment that businesses often
neglect to offer customers. A handshake and promise will often get the average consumer cheated out of
a fair deal. BBB gives back the power of word of mouth. I can’t thank you [BBB] enough.” Lorraine M.
ADVERTISING REVIEW - BBB regularly reviews local advertising to ensure it meets the BBB Code of
Advertising Guidelines. Advertisers are requested to provide verifiable, third-party documentation to prove
claims made in advertising and to modify confusing or misleading advertising. In 2012, Your BBB made
businesses aware of ethical advertising guidelines and
helped them to make advertising corrections 119 times,
which included the launch of one of our largest industry
sweeps that focused on the air duct industry.
COMMUNITY VOICE - BBB warns the public about
troublesome marketplace issues and provides tips at
least once a week. BBB furthers its outreach efforts
by producing and participating in community events.
We hold educational seminars for businesses and
charities, giving them the tools to perform at their ethical
best in the marketplace. In 2012 BBB continued its
programming of BBB Nights, Breakfast & Bytes and the
Annual Accreditation Celebration.

school juniors and seniors. The SMARTS Program saw success in 2012 as it grew
to include 19 students from three schools that worked at six local organizations.
SMARTS intern, Hope Daly, from the Academy of Urban Learning, shares her
experience: “I built new skills, learned new things and was able to improve
my work ethic. I was able to practice and improve my social skills, learned to
overcome my anxiety and I was also able to learn how to push myself out of
my comfort zone. Those are things that will truly benefit me in my life, and I’m
grateful. I personally couldn’t think of a better way to transition into the working
world.”
