All of South Carolina’s early explorations were very important. The history of the state was actually defined by the first settlement. The Spanish was unsuccessful in trying to colonize near present day Georgetown .The French also failed to colonize Parris Island near Port Royal. • Spain, France, and England all vied for a foothold in South Carolina to enrich the mother country • Hernando de Soto, traveled through looking for gold, but neither Spain nor France were able to establish a permanent settlement • Lack of support due to problems in the mother countries and conditions at the colonies themselves resulted in colonies abandonment Compare activates, motives, and accomplishments of exploration of South Carolina by the Spanish, French, and English • Spain founded San Miguel de Gualdape settlement, located along the Waccamaw River, near present day Georgetown but abandoned it • France founded Charlesfort near present day Beafort, but this too was abandoned • Spain tried a second time to establish a foothold, and founded San Felipe, which was built on the abandoned Charlesfort settlement. This settlement survived for 10 years until it was attacked by Natives and the survivors fled to Florida • Finally, the English founded the first permanent settlement colony in South Carolina, Charles Town 1670.
