Comparing motives, activities, and accomplishments of the exploration of
North America by the Spanish, French, and the English.
All of South Carolina’s early explorations were
very important. The history of the state was actually
defined by the first settlement. The Spanish was
unsuccessful in trying to colonize near present day
Georgetown .The French also failed to colonize Parris
Island near Port Royal.
• Spain, France, and England all vied for a foothold in
South Carolina to enrich the mother country
• Hernando de Soto, traveled through looking for gold, but
neither Spain nor France were able to establish a
permanent settlement
• Lack of support due to problems in the mother countries
and conditions at the colonies themselves resulted in
colonies abandonment
Compare activates, motives, and
accomplishments of exploration of South
Carolina by the Spanish, French, and English
• Spain founded San Miguel de Gualdape settlement,
located along the Waccamaw River, near present day
Georgetown but abandoned it
• France founded Charlesfort near present day Beafort, but
this too was abandoned
• Spain tried a second time to establish a foothold, and
founded San Felipe, which was built on the abandoned
Charlesfort settlement. This settlement survived for 10
years until it was attacked by Natives and the survivors
fled to Florida
• Finally, the English founded the first permanent
settlement colony in South Carolina, Charles Town 1670.
