The Cartridge Countermeasure 55mm No4 Mk2 is
used for the self defence of military aircraft whilst
in flight, against infrared-seeking missiles. The
cartridge is carried in a multiple magazine fitted to
the SAAB BOZ series of cartridge dispensers and
the Thales Series 400 dispenser.
Each cartridge contains two electrically initiated
flare assemblies. Each flare assembly is ejected
individually from the cartridge. An exceptionally
high energy output from the emitting pyrotechnic
compositions contained in the flare assembly
provides the decoy infrared heat source.
