Character Trait of the Month
The Character Trait for the month of September is
Respect. For the next few weeks the students of
Cherrytree will be doing many activities relating to
Respect.
Respect means caring and treating others with
kindness. By showing respect for others, the
environment, and yourself, you will, in turn, earn
the respect that you deserve.
-
Kids can’t learn on an empty stomach so try to ensure that they
get a healthy complete breakfast. Several schools have breakfast
programs so please feel free to take advantage of them.
Several studies show that when parents are engaged in their
child’s education their kids perform better. So even a simple
gesture like talking to your child about their day or week goes a
long way.
You are important partners with the School Board, staff and
teachers. I am here to serve you, the parents, so please call or
email me at [email protected] I will try to return all
calls and emails within 48 hours.
Despite the enthusiasm and eagerness to return to school, please
try to ensure that your children get a good night’s sleep.
School Councils do more than fundraise. ..so check them out .You
will meet amazing people, gather valuable information and work
to fulfil the school success plan.
I would like to thank the Administration, teachers, custodians and all
staff for all their hard work in preparing for the return of the students.
So I wish everyone a wonderful, healthy, safe, engaging and
stimulating academic year. I hope that each child will realize their full
potential. I look forward to interacting with your children as I visit the
schools, conduct story telling sessions and attend special events.

Trustee Wards 3 and 4
The month of September is upon us and the Cherrytree staff, Mrs. Gardner (Vice Principal) and I
are excited to be welcoming families to Cherrytree. As your new Principal I look forward to
connecting with you and celebrating your children’s learning throughout the year.
We know that students will be most successful when parents, students and teachers work together
for student success. Your child’s teacher should be your first line of contact. As an administrative
team, we are here to support you and your children but the person who will have the biggest
impact in your child’s life is their classroom teacher. We believe that clear and effective
communication is important. Therefore we use a variety of tools to keep parents informed
including: agendas, newsletters, calendars, flyers, synervoice messages and the school website as
examples. I encourage you to follow our Twitter account @CherrytreePS and subscribe to our
school website http://schools.peelschools.org/1577
I look forward to working with you to ensure our children become independent, lifelong learners.
Mrs. Nancy McCartney Principal
Breakfast Club
Once again we will be having the breakfast club. The donations from families of children
attending is a big help towards providing a balanced breakfast, but we are looking for sponsors or
companies who would be able to donate food such as boxes of cereal…If you know of anyone
who has a contact that we could approach, please give our office staff the person’s name and
phone number. Thank you for your support.
Updated procedures for anaphylactic students
In order to create a safe school environment for staff and students, new procedures have been
implemented for students with anaphylactic allergies.
All staff must be informed of students
who have been prescribed an Epi-Pen, Epi-Pen Junior or Allerject. Two Epi-Pens/Allerjets
should be available: one is kept with the student at all times and the other is stored in an
accessible location for staff and students.
Allergies & Medications
If your child will require any medication while they are at school, please make sure to pick up an
“Administration of Prescribed Medication” form from the office. This form must be completed
on a yearly basis before any medication can be administered at school.
Please be advised that we have several students in the school with severe allergies. While we
cannot guarantee a nut free environment, we encourage student to avoid bringing nut products
into the school. The sharing of snacks is strictly forbidden. Birthday treats (candies, cakes etc.)
are also not to come to school. Staff cannot distribute treats or food which has been sent in from
home. (If you wish to remember your child’s birthday or wish to send in a class treat, please
consider items such as pencils, special erasers or books.)
Visitor Sign-In Procedure
Upon their arrival, all parents and visitors to the school must go to the main office and obtain a
visitor’s tag. To assist us in our efforts to provide a safe learning environment for all of our
students, we ask that all visitors and parents refrain from going directly to their child’s classroom.
Extended Vacations
If you are planning for your child to be absent from school for an extended vacation, please write
a letter to Mrs. McCartney, Principal and include details of the absence and dates. For bus
information, delays and cancellations please visit: http://businfo.stopr.ca
Reorganization Day- Tuesday September 29th
Last June, we created classes with a balanced make-up. These classes are tentative until after
reorganization day. Due to changes in our school’s enrolment, it sometimes becomes necessary to
reorganize classes early in the year. Our class sizes are determined by provincial and board
staffing guidelines. All classes and teacher assignments will be finalized after Reorganization
Day. There is no school for students on Tuesday September 29th.
Protect Your Kids—And Your Finances
The Peel District School Board does not provide accident insurance coverage for student injuries
that occur on school property or during school activities including extracurricular sports. Each
year, many of our families spend thousands of dollars when their children are injured at school,
on field trips, while participating in non-school activities, or at home. If a student is injured,
parent(s)/guardian(s) are responsible for any costs not covered by provincial health care or their
employer’s health plan. Please check with your provider regarding your coverage.
The provincial health care system does not cover costs which are commonly related to accidents
including dental work, ambulance fees, casts and crutches, and physiotherapy. All of these are
covered by Reliable Life’s student accident insurance plan.insurance agreement is between you
and Reliable Life Insurance Company. You can apply for coverage through paper application or
online at www.insuremykids.com. For more information call Reliable Life Insurance Company
toll free at 1-800-463-KIDS (5437).
Schools Use Many Strategies to Keep Children Safe
Peel schools provide a safe environment for staff and students to work and learn. The board has
many procedures to ensure safety. To keep students safe, schools use many strategies including:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Requiring all parents and visitors to check in at the main office and obtain visitor passes
The use of a "buddy system" – students can only leave the classroom if accompanied by
another student (for example, going to the washroom)
Assigning teachers to supervise inside and outside the school during recesses, before and
after school
Locking all exteriors doors, including the main entrance, during school hours
Encouraging staff to regularly review street-proofing skills with students
Expecting staff and students to report unidentified individuals to the office immediately
Holding fire drills and "lockdown" rehearsals
Ensuring that all staff and volunteers have up-to-date criminal record checks
For more information about safety at your school, review your school handbook or speak to your
principal or teacher.
