RADIATION PROTECTION TRAINING AT THE
SEIBERSDORF ACADEMY
The Seibersdorf Academy is Austria‘s largest training center for
radiation protection. As well as an extensive training program for
the civilian sectors of medicine, technology, and research, we also
offer a special modular training system in radiation protection and
disaster control for members of the military and emergency services,
i.e. police, fire department, and rescue services. We have more than
50 years of experience in providing radiation protection training.
More than 50,000 emergency services members to date have been
trained in Seibersdorf.
Seibersdorf Academy has recently concluded a cooperation agreement with Hot Zone Solutions GmbH enabling both companies to
offer a wide range of radiological training.
Building on more than 75 years’ field experience in NBC
defense, international weapons inspection, emergency response,
medicine, forensics, counter-terrorism and non-destructive investigation, HZS offers a full spectrum service with core competencies
covering the use of biological and chemical warfare agents, toxic
industrial chemicals, explosives and radioactive materials.
Hot Zone Solutions GmbH (HZS) is an independent training and
consulting company with a first-class reputation for providing a wide
range of training, security and consulting services to the chemical,
biological, radiological/nuclear and explosives (CBRNE) response
community. HZS is based in Austria and maintains regional offices
in India and South America (Brazil), with an office opening in Dubai
(UAE) in 2010.

The Seibersdorf Academy has its own facilities for providing training
in dealing with unsealed and sealed sources of radiation and with
X-ray equipment. A wide variety of different measuring devices,
practice materials, and radiation sources, of course, are also
available for training purposes.
radiation protection training for ACTION FORCE
This module constitutes the introduction to the training system for
emergency services. In this module, participants are taught the basic
principles of radioactivity and radiation protection.
This module is optional for participants who already have an
appropriate level of existing knowledge in this field.
“Bronze” Module
This module teaches the basic technical prerequisites for dealing
with radioactive substances.
The module is completed with an exam, and successful candidates
are awarded a bronze medal.
“silver” Module
This module is concerned with teaching the special knowledge
required for correct assessment of situations in the event of
incidents or disasters involving radioactive substances and for
efficient deployment of emergency services.
The prerequisite for this module is successful completion of the
Bronze Module. The Silver Module is completed with an exam, and
successful candidates are awarded a silver medal.
“gold” MODULe
In this module, candidates must write an academic paper on
radiation protection and disaster control, dealing with an issue
relevant to the emergency service in which they are active.
The prerequisite for this module is successful completion of the
Bronze and Silver Modules. On successful completion of this module,
candidates receive a gold medal.
MODULar structure for radiation protection
training
Radiation protection training for emergency services consists of 6
modules, as shown in the adjoining diagram:

Dealing with „unsealed radioactive substances“ is of particular
importance for emergency services. For example, in the event of an
accident at a nuclear power plant or a transport accident involving
the release of radioactive substances, or in the event of a terrorist
attack using a „dirty bomb,“ decontamination measures for people
and objects may be necessary. In this module, participants learn the
correct way to detect radioactive contamination und how to eliminate it, with the greatest importance being placed on self-protection.
The training in the Basic, Bronze and Silver Modules uses sealed
radioactive substances, whereas in the Deco Bronze Module,
unsealed radioactive substances are used, in order to make
deployment scenarios as realistic as possible. The main priority
is the safety of the participants. All participants are supervised by
our radiation protection experts throughout the entire exam and, in
the Deco Bronze module, are also examined for incorporated radioactive substances using a whole body counter at the end of the exam.
The entire module has been inspected and approved by the Austrian
radiation protection authorities in accordance with Austrian radiation
protection law.
specialized ModulEs
These modules include incident commanders’ courses, sampling
and forensic courses as well as courses specifically designed for the
customer’s operational requirements, based upon scenarios such
as dealing with radiological dispersion devices (RDDs such as dirty
bombs, pre and post blast), illicit trafficking of radiological materials,
accidents involving the transport of such materials and screening of
suspicious packages containing radiological emitters.
