Oshawa Tank Museum
Sing Along
The Oshawa Tank Museum is home to Canada’s
largest collection of operational military vehicles
from around the world. The museum regularly hosts
“Tank Saturdays”, where tank operators have live
demonstrations of their speed, weapons, and special
features. This month’s theme was Operation Desert
Storm. Join us again in August where we will get
to see vehicles from NATO.
Community Members enjoyed a live musical
performance and sing-along by Donna Barber. She
led the group by singing our favourite tunes from the
past and inspired Community Members to get up and
dance! Special thanks to Donna for coming to perform
with us, and we look forward to seeing her in the Fall.

Wine and Paint
In this month’s Wine and Paint class, Community
Members enjoyed creating a relaxing beach scene.
It’s amazing to see how different everyone’s view of
the same scene is. If you look closely at some of the
paintings, we have some comedians who left funny
messages on the sand in their artwork. Join us in
July where Team Member, Georgia, will lead us in her
own style.
Happy Father’s Day.
Tank demonstration.
All smiles with wine and paint.
Zumba Party
Matti Dias is back with her Zumba Party on the
2nd Saturday of every month at 2:30pm. Come on
down to the V!VAfit Studio to get up, move your
legs and listen to fantastic music! No experience
necessary, and you can do this program from the
comfort of your chair!
Beautiful art.

Enjoying the classic cars.
Father’s Day Classic Car Show
Copyright V!VA Retirement Communities Corporation, 14/11/01
Once again we celebrated Father’s Day with the V!VA Pickering Classic Car Show and BBQ. Our parking
lot was full of cars from the early 1900’s up until the 1980’s with most cars having been personally
restored by their owners. Community Members enjoyed a delicious BBQ lunch and cooled down with some
refreshments in the beer tent. We would like to thank John Nice from Shake, Rabble & Roll Inc. for providing
the music and all the beautiful cars. We hope you enjoyed Father’s Day and we look forward to doing it all
again next year!

History of the Canadian Flag
Oh, Canada! A member of the British Commonwealth,
also known as the land of hockey, maple syrup,
lumberjacks, and bagged milk. Our country’s flag, a red
field with a white square in the centre featuring a red
maple leaf, is among Canada’s most well-known symbols.
As such, it might surprise you to learn that this distinctive
flag was adopted less than fifty years ago...
History of the Canadian Flag
Canada has a long history of flags.
The first concept introduced to the
country was St. George’s Cross in
1497 when John Cabot landed in
Newfoundland. The cross was representative of England
at the time. Later, in 1534, Jacques Cartier flew the royal
coat of arms of France, along with a fleurs-de-lis, claiming
the land for the French. The area, called “New France”,
continued to fly the French flag at the time.
From 1621, with the establishment
of a British settlement in Nova
Scotia, the British Union Flag was
chosen. When Canada underwent
confederation in 1867, the three British colonies in Canada
became four Canadian provinces and the need arose for
a distinctive Canadian flag. The flag of the Governor
General of Canada was used, which was a Union Flag
with a shield in the centre that bore the arms of each of
the provinces, surrounded by a maple leaf wreath.
The Maple Leaf
The initial leaf design was first incorporated into the
100th Regiment badge by 1860, and Alexander Muir
wrote a confederation song in 1868 titled The Maple
Leaf Forever, which was considered the national song of
Canada. However, the next design excluded the leaf and
the Canadian Red Ensign was chosen in 1870. (In 1939, the
maple leaf gained significance during World War II when
Canadian soldiers fought under the
Union Flag and were distinguishable
by their maple leaf badges.)
MIND W
RKOUT
In 1925, a committee was set up by Prime Minister
William Lyon Mackenzie King to design a new Canadian
flag. The committee dissolved before the issue could be
resolved. Fortunately, another committee was appointed
to resolve the flag issue in 1945.
They suggested a Red Ensign with
a gold maple leaf instead of the
Canadian coat of arms. However,
the legislators in Quebec argued that the official flag
shouldn’t bear any “foreign symbols,” and the flag issue
remained unresolved.
The Flag Debate
Finally, in 1964, Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson called
for the creation of a new Canadian flag. The Prime
Minister presented a new design — making the maple
leaf a prominent symbol on the flag — to Parliament
on June 15, but his proposal was met with debate
and indecision. The main issue was whether or not to
include the Union Jack in the new flag. The proposal was
considered for three months before being referred to an
all-party committee. The committee decided to ask the
public to send in their design suggestions for the new
flag – they received thousands!
We Have a Winner
On October 29, 1964, the winning
design was proposed. Dr. George
Stanley’s suggestion inspired the
current flag’s design. As the Dean of
Arts at the Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario,
he looked to the college’s flag design, which bore three
red maple leaves on a white and red background. On
December 15, 1964, a decision was finally made. At
2:15am, Parliament voted to accept the maple leaf
design. The official flag was hoisted for the first time on
February 15, 1965.
