DegreeWorks GPA Calculation
A reference guide for students
Updated July 11, 2014
What is GPA?
• GPA stands for Grade Point Average – it is a cumulative view of
academic standing in your Program Of Studies (POS). This GPA will
account for all completed and passed courses in your POS with a
numeric grade
• GPA is weighted – courses with higher credit values impact the
GPA more than courses with lower credit values

What is included in GPA?
To be included in GPA calculation a course must:
• Have a passing grade
• Have a numeric grade
• Be a part of the POS
3 of 11
What is excluded from GPA?
•
Any course that is not part of the POS
For example, if you are in Computer Systems Technology - Network Engineering and Security Analyst program and
you take a course in Make-Up Artistry your grade from Make-Up Artistry will not be a factor in your GPA.
•
Any course that did not achieve a passing grade
• If you do not pass a course in your POS you will be required to repeat that course or its equivalent in order to
graduate. The non-passing grade will not count toward your cumulative GPA but will count towards your
semester promotion GPA – See the Program Promotion and Graduation Requirements policy (AC700) for more
information on semester promotion GPAs.
• Most courses at Mohawk are considered a pass if the mark is equal to or greater than 50%. Exceptions do exist
and the most current information can be found here.
•
Any course that does not have a numeric grade

How is GPA calculated?
Sum of (percent grade × credit value) divided by sum of the credits
Step 1
For each completed course in your program: final grade × credit value = X
Step 2
Add X values for completed courses in your program = Y
Step 3
Add credit values for completed courses with numeric grades in your program = Z
Step 4
Y divided by Z = GPA
For clarification see the following example

Final Grades
GPA Calculation Example - Step 1
Credit Values
For each completed course in your program: final grade × credit value = X
93 × 3 = 279
93 × 3 = 279
78 × 3 = 234
80 × 3 = 240
91 × 2 = 182
R × 2 = N/A
E × 2 = N/A
97 × 3 = 291
86 × 3 = 258
86 × 3 = 258
R × 5 = N/A
87 × 3 = 261
R × 5 = N/A
R × 4 = N/A
7 of 11
GPA Calculation Example - Step 2
Add X values for completed courses in your program = Y
279 + 279 + 234 + 240 + 182 + 291 + 258 + 258 +261 = 2282
Y = 2282

Credit Values
GPA Calculation Example - Step 3
Add credit values for completed courses with numeric grades in your
program = Z
3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 2 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 26
Z = 26
9 of 11
GPA Calculation Example - Step 4
Y divided by Z = GPA
Y = 2282
Z = 26
2282 ÷ 26 = 87.76…
Note: Since GPAs are truncated at the decimal and not rounded
this GPA is 87
