Students will be able to describe the development of adolescence, adulthood, death, and the process of grief. Students will be able to learn about the six classes of essential nutrients and how the body uses each nutrient, and also will be introduced to the MyPyramid food guidance system, and the Nutrition Facts label. DESCRIPTION: Students will learn about pathogens and the differences between infectious and noninfectious diseases; how hormones affect their growth and development; major events associated with adulthood, the process of aging, death, and how to deal with grief; and the nutrients in food that are important for maintaining the functions of the body. Discussion of the topic, creation of charts or concept maps, comparisons and contrast of ideas, evaluation of real-situations, and role-playing are some of the activities that will be used to achieve the objectives of the unit. Analyzes how hormones affect growth and development; and physical development during adolescence. Summarizes the emotional, physical, mental, and social changes than happen during adolescence. Describes development during adulthood and lists the stages of grief. Analyzes how nutrition affects your overall health and how the body uses food. Classifies the six classes of essential nutrients and foods that are good sources of each nutrient. Explains the food groups shown on the MyPyramid symbol and how to read a Nutrition Facts Label.
