ROLL SIX!
Purpose: !!! GENERAL REVIEW
Process:
PRONUNCIATION
ACTIVE HOUR
1. Divide students into groups of 3 or 4. (To make it exciting, I talk about it like
“casino night” and each table is a poker table.)
2. Give each individual a playing sheet to complete. Give each group one die and one
writing utensil to share.
3. Explain that their goal is to complete the sheet in front of them. But they only
have one writing utensil to share to complete their sheets. And they can only use
the writing utensil when they roll a six.
4. Announce who is allowed to roll first (youngest person?). That person rolls. If a
six is rolled, s/he yells “SEIS” and grabs the utensil to start writing. If not, the die is
passed to the next person and all players continue to roll in order. As soon as a six
is rolled, that player yells “SEIS” and takes the writing utensil away from the
student that last had it to start writing. Keep the die passing and rolling all hour!
5. Pronunciation: When a student rolls a six, s/he must yell SEIS. Then, once s/he
starts writing, s/he must call out what they are writing aloud to practice
pronunciation. If s/he doesn’t say it aloud, the other players should call him/her
out on it – nothing written counts if the writer isn’t speaking aloud.
6. Sit back and enjoy the hour! This activity turns any worksheet into a game, and
the students will be so focused and stimulated that they won’t want to be
interrupted.
7. I’m including an answer key. I like to call time 5-10 minutes before the end of the
hour and have students trade papers to grade each other’s – one point per correct
word. But it must be legible to count!
**Be aware – this game is very luck-based. It could happen that a student never rolls a
six or only rolls it once. So I never use this game for anything that puts points in the
grade book. If you want to put it in the grade book, you may want to wrap up early
enough that students can fill in the questions they missed while you go over the
answers or let students take it home to finish overnight.
