Mrs. Flowers’ Kindergarten Pawprint Page Home of the HB Sugg Lion Cubs You and your child will begin a very important milestone in your child’s life –starting kindergarten! I understand that both of you may have met the initial days with excitement or apprehension (or a little of both) so I hope that this letter will help you to know what to expect in kindergarten this year. It is my intention that the information that follows will provide some answers to some of your questions. I look forward to this special journey that we will travel together. I would like to take this time to introduce myself. My name is Mrs. Sandra Flowers. This is my 38th year as a teacher, having taught in grades K-4 and worked in TAG (the Talented and Gifted program). Fourteen of those years have been in kindergarten. I graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a degree in Early Childhood Education. I am married to Bill Flowers and have two married children. My son Brad and his wife Amy have a daughter named Mary Grace who loves playing softball and the violin. My daughter Stephanie and her husband Chris have a daughter named Addison who is almost 17 months old. She loves books and Elmo. To them I am Noni and they call Mr. Flowers Pops. Being with my family makes me very happy. I feel very blessed! Your child will become part of our kindergarten family. I consider it an honor and a privilege to be your child’s teacher. There is a quote that says….”there is no better exercise for the heart than reaching down to lift someone up”, and with all of us working together, your child will achieve and believe that they can be successful learners. So…Rise, shine, welcome to school today…..we’re so glad you’re here! Throughout the year I will communicate with you through notes, telephone calls, contact through a web-site (I will let you know about this at a later time), quarterly reports and parent-teacher conferences. I encourage you to contact me if you have any questions or concerns at any time. You can call me at school (753-2671), at home before 9 PM (753-5313), send me a note or e-mail me at [email protected] [email protected]. I am available for conferences regarding your child’s progress by appointment on school days. Parent Participation Throughout the school year there will be a variety of special classroom activities and celebrations. I encourage you to attend these functions when possible and to support them by sending needed supplies or treats. Your support of school activities makes your child feel important and sends the message that you value school. For example, when your child is selected TERRIFIC KID it is our custom to invite you to come to school on the Friday of that week and plan to eat lunch with your child. Then when we return to the class we would like for you to plan to read your child’s favorite book to the class if you would like to do so. However we do not encourage parents to make this a day to take their child out of school early as we will still have other work to do. School Attendance Your child’s regular and prompt attendance at school is crucial to his/her success. I can’t emphasize this point enough!!! Most kindergarten learning activities are group oriented and involve interaction with classmates. Therefore, it is next to impossible to make up work at home. Please view school as a priority, and see to it that your child Create PDF files without this message by purchasing novaPDF printer (http://www.novapdf.com) attends every day except in cases of illness or emergency. If your child is absent, please send a note with your child stating the reason when they return to school. Students who get perfect attendance this year will receive special recognition on Award’s Day and a special HB Sugg t-shirt to honor their accomplishment! School Hours Kindergarten students attend school from 7:45-2:10. Please do not bring your child to school any earlier than 7:15 a.m., as they are not permitted in the classrooms before this time. If you need to pick up your child during the school day, you must sign him/her out in the office. Breakfast will be served daily to all kindergarten children at no cost to your child. Students should be ready to leave the classroom by 7:40 in order to have time to eat and get to special activities and/or back to the room to begin the day’s instruction. This will move smoothly if you would help your child memorize their lunch number. We will practice this at school but I will send a reminder to you for practice at home. Thank you for your help. Special Reminder: At any time when you plan to come to school after the school day has started or to pick up your child early, stop by the office. Our office personnel will tell you what you need to do before you come to the classroom. A visitor’s pass is needed at all times when you are in the building. Thank you! Changes in Transportation If you plan to pick up a child that normally rides the bus or you wish for your child to ride a different bus than usual, you MUST send a written note. Do not rely on your child to tell me this information, because children often become confused and relay messages incorrectly. If no written note is received, your child will be sent home by his/her usual method of transportation. Please keep this is in mind when helping your child to select clothing for the day. If you think your child might need a snack you might wish to send something for him or her at this time. Money On occasion it will be necessary for your child to bring money to school. Always send money in a sealed envelope with the following information written on it: 1. Your child’s first and last name. 2. The amount of money. 3. The purpose for the money (book money, party money, etc). 4. My name. With 20 or more children in our class to keep records on and several reasons to collect money, this helps me out tremendously and reduces the likelihood of errors. Also, if the envelope is left on the bus or dropped in the hallway, this information will help the money to be returned to my classroom. Birthdays Birthdays are special occasions for young children. If your child wishes, he/she may bring treats for the class on the Friday nearest his/her birthday. Please send a note a day or two in advance, so I can give you an exact number of children in the class and set aside some class time for the party. Please do not send birthday party invitations to school unless the entire class has been invited. Although it may seem convenient to distribute invitations this way, it can result in hurt feelings for those not invited. If you wish to order, simply fill out the form and send the correct amount of money or a check made out to the book company in an envelope. These orders are provided as a convenient way for parents to buy quality books for their child at a low price. As an added bonus, for every dollar that is spent on books, I earn bonus points, which are used to purchase books for classroom use. This is a win-win situation because you get quality literature at a low price and you are helping to provide quality literature for the classroom. Of course, you are never under any obligation to order. Every child should feel that the classroom environment is safe and secure: free from all threats of physical or emotional harm. In addition, it is important that each child learn to develop self-discipline and good work habits, to resolve conflicts peacefully, and to think independently. You will receive a behavior sheet each day to let you know how your child was that dayHe/She will receive a happy face or sad face. I will explain what happened if your child receives a sad face. Please be sure to sign the Behavior/Work sheet and return it in the folder to school each day. Please take out any papers that are in the folder and leave them at home. I use a dot board to monitor behavior. (Reported on behavior sheet) Green Dot = warning dot/smiley face Yellow Dot = smiley face in homework folder/time in “thinking chair”/talk with teacher Red Dot = sad face in homework folder/silent lunch/ talk with teacher/note to parent Once all three dots are on the behavior board( three days in a row) I will give you a call to set up a conference to discuss ways that we can best meet the needs of your child. If unruly behaviors continue that disrupt learning, Mrs. Galberth will be notified. I want the very best for your child and his/her classmates and know that you want the same. Behavior is one of the important keys to being able to learn and allow others to learn. Thank you for your support. I would also like to suggest that you save this letter for future reference. Thank you in advance for your support during the school year. In closing, as you get to know me better, you will discover that I love positive quotes. I was reading a book and read this one and believe it to be very true. “Teachers have the opportunity to make their classrooms a needed nest, a safe haven, a place of faith, love, integrity, value, a place where children can thrive. Most of all it can become a place where excellence is love in action.” I hope this will be the gift that I will be able to give your child this year!
