February 2013 Dear Parents of Freshmen, For many years

February 2013
Dear Parents of Freshmen,
For many years, freshmen at Benet Academy were offered a nine-week course in Computer Literacy.
This introductory computer class taught the basics of Microsoft Office, computer logic and file management.
Now that all freshmen take Biology, offering Computer Literacy has become more problematic. Therefore, as
we did last summer with excellent results, Benet Academy will be offering several three-week Computer
Literacy classes this summer for incoming freshmen.
These classes, worth one-quarter credit, will run for three hours four days a week. The Computer
Literacy class will be graded like any other class and the final grade will be entered into the student’s overall
Grade Point Average. Though these summer classes are not mandatory, we highly encourage all incoming
freshmen to enroll in one of them if possible. The reasons for doing so are multiple:
1) Freshmen will start Benet knowing the fundamentals of our network, plus various application
programs, including Microsoft Office, necessary for Benet success and beyond.
2) Freshmen will be better prepared for assignments in such courses as Biology, English and World
History.
3) Freshmen will NOT have to forfeit a Study Hall or Band period for Computer Literacy.
4) Freshmen will have the opportunity to transition into Benet more quickly as they interact with
their new classmates over the summer.
The details of this summer’s Computer Literacy classes are found on the back side of this letter.
Please be aware that we must consider teacher availability, lab time and student numbers. In other words,
future adjustments might be necessary as we go forward with this program. Therefore, we ask that you select a
first choice time and a second choice time. Having more options permits us to schedule with more efficiency.
The cost will be $125, payable to Benet Academy. Applications are due April 1st. We will confirm the time
and session of your child’s class by email. Confirmation should be done no later than May 1st.
Most incoming freshmen will have had some computer training in junior high school. As good as
these programs may have been, our experience tells us that few, if any, freshmen can meet the expectations
demanded by our Computer Literacy class. Benet’s class is more challenging in depth and more expansive in
scope. Those few ninth graders who do not enroll this summer will be enrolled in a regular Computer Literacy
class during a Study Hall during the school year. Our goal would be to have all Computer Literacy classes
completed by the end of the first semester.
Dress for the summer Literacy Class will be casual; students not dressed in good taste, however, will
be sent home. If you have any questions about Computer Literacy, please give us a call. We strongly believe
that this summer’s offering will benefit our incoming freshmen in many important ways.
Sincerely,
James E. Brown
