BRIEF PROFILE
Anil K. Dhingra, Ph.D, studied Spanish at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi,
Complutense University of Madrid, Official School of Languages, Madrid and Salamanca
University, Salamanca, Spain. He has been teaching Spanish language, translation &
interpretation at the Jawaharlal Nehru University since 1980. As one of the Indian hispanists of
earlier generation he has played a key role in expanding and consolidating the teaching and
learning of Spanish in different parts of India. He has been advisor for the establishment of
Spanish language study programs at Indira Gandhi National Open University, New Delhi, Doon
University, Dehradun, Uttara Khand, Amity University, NOIDA. As Adjunct Professor of
Spanish in Doon University, he has been actively involved in the guidance and mentoring of
Spanish language program in that University. He has been instrumental in creating links of
academic cooperation between Jawaharlal Nehru University and universities in Spain such as
University of Illes Balears, Complutense University of Madrid, University of Valladolid, Nebrija
University and University of Castilla La Mancha and has actively participated in joint academic
activities with these universities. In addition, as Program Coordinator of MULTIELE
(www.multiele.org/es/miembros.html) – European Master for the Teaching and Learning of
Spanish in Multicultural & International Contexts, he has established strong institutional links
with partner universities in Europe in the area of Spanish language teaching and training of
teachers.
Dr. Dhingra has been invited by several universities and cultural institutions in Spain and Europe
to impart lectures on Spanish language teaching, Indian multiculturalism, linguistic diversity,
gender issues and Indian secularism. These include, University of Stockholm, Sweden,
University of Castilla La Mancha, Toledo, University of Illes Balears, Palma, University of
Deusto, Bilbao, University of Pompeu Fabra and University of Barcelona, Barcelona, Free
University of Berlin, Germany, University of Vigo, Galicia, University of Valladolid, University
of Salamanca, University of Granada (GEMMA Program), Complutense University of Madrid,
International University of Menorca Illa del Rei, Menorca, University of Navarra, Pamplona,
Autonomous University of Madrid, University of Rovira i Virgili, Tarragona and also cultural
institutions such as Casa India de Valladolid, Casa Asia de Madrid and Centro Cultural Sa
Nostra and Caixa Forum, Palma, Foro la Region, Galicia and Instituto Cervantes, Berlin.
He has published 13 books on themes related to Indo-Hispanic studies which also include two
Hindi translations of literary works from Spain. He has participated in more than 40 national and
international conferences and seminars related to the themes of Hispanic Studies.
He has been on the advisory panel of several universities in India and University Grants
Commission, New Delhi and has provided professional consultancy in the field of Spanish
translation, consecutive and simultaneous interpretation to UN agencies, government ministries,
international agencies and several NGOs involving participation of Heads of State or
Government in India and abroad.
He currently guides research at the level of M.Phil and Ph.D in areas related to Spanish language
teaching, intercultural studies and translation/interpretation and also edits Hispanic Horizon
(ISSN 0907-7522), journal of Hispanic Studies, published by Jawaharlal Nehru University.
He has been conferred the decoration of the Order of Manuel Amador Guerrero by the
Honorable President of the Republic of Panama for his contribution in promoting Panamanian
