Objectives and activities
Copts in Need is a humanitarian charity bas.ed upon Christian beliefs and values. It is dedicated to the
reduction of extreme poverty, sickness and distress among some of the poorest people in, but not
restricted to, Egypt and Sudan. Our main activities are directed towards providing safe and long
lasting shelters, supplied with water, electricity and sanitation. Copts in Need is committed to
providing food, health and education We aim to empower individuals by creating employment
opportunities.
We aim to achieve major improvement in the lives of those people who are living in extreme poverty
and help them realise their Fundamental Human Rights to food, health and education in addition to a
life of dignity.
Achievements and Performance
Copts in Need has grown steadily since it was founded in October 2010. Our trustees and members,
along with our teams on the ground, have worked hard in order for the charity to grow and achieve its
objectives.
Year on year we continue to increase the numbers of active members and supporters. This year is no
exception. We managed to organise high|y successful fundraising events in London, Brighton and
Manchester which has resulted in the growth of the Charity's income for the year.
During the financial year ending 31 March 2014, Copts in Need has managed to construct several
hundred social houses and supplied them with clean water, connected electricity and built septic
tanks for sanitation. All houses are furnished with beds and essential furniture.
Through the collaboration with Al Rai and Om Alnour (Egyptian based charities), Copts in Need
continued to help with the construction and setting up the 600 bed hospital in Upper Egypt which is
reaching the final stages of construction and will be of a great medical help to the area's poorest
individuals. We continued to finance and set up more nursery schools and literacy classes
We have provided food for over 500 families as well as financing a few major heart operations. To
help with solving the problem of employment in upper Egypt, we managed to set up numerous small
projects.

COPTS IN NEED
REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 MARCH 2014 (Continued)
Dr Awad visited Nuba and Sudan to see for himself the projects we started last year. It is good to
report that the construction of two schools jwith several classes and which can accommodate up to
several hundred pupils has now been completed and the schools are up and running. The charity also
managed to build over seventy houses aVid helped in setting up other small projects. We also
identified the future area of help and the next social housing project.
Financial review
During the period, the charity raised £302,237' in funds from a number of generous corporate and
individual donors and expended £130,265 on its charitable activities.
Reserves Policy
j
The charity will continue to build up its reserves so that it can effectively fund its objectives and
activities as set out above.
I
Plans for future periods
Plans for the future will be directed towards ensuring that funds continue to grow along with our
membership. We are aiming to build over 2[)D houses a year and continue to set up small projects to
help with employment. We are aiming to reduce blindness by setting up an ambitious project (Eyes in
Assuit) in Upper Egypt's largest city to treat common and prevalent eye diseases through a mobile
unit. We aim to expand our activities to the Nubian region of Sudan.
Trustees' responsibilities for the financial statements
Charity law requires the Trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial period which give
a true and fair view of the state of affairs of Copts in Need and of the income and expenditure of the
Trust for that period.
In preparing those financial statements, the Trustees are required to:•
•
•
•
select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently;
make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent;
follow applicable accounting standards, subject to any material departures disclosed and
explained in the financial statements; and
prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume
that the Trust will continue in operation.
The Trustees are responsible for maintaining proper accounting records which disclose with
reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charity and enable them to ensure that
the financial statements comply with relevant law. They are also responsible for safeguarding the
assets of the charity and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud
and other irregularities.
Public benefit
During the period, the Trustees have had regard to the public benefit guidance issued by the Charity
Commission. They believe that, in fulfilling the charity's primary objectives, we are delivering help to
those in need of food, safe shelter, clean drinking water, healthcare, education and employment
opportunities in Egypt and Sudan. The organisation, therefore, is meeting its obligations under the
public benefit guidance.

INDEPENDENT EXAMINER'S REPORT TO THE TRUSTEES OF COPTS IN NEED
I
I report on the financial statements of the cjiarity for the year ended 31 March 2014, which comprise
the Statement of Financial Activities, the Balance Sheet and related notes.
Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner
The charity's Trustees are responsible for the preparation of the financial statements. The charity's
Trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144(2) of the Charities Act
2011 (the 2011 Act) and that an independent examination is needed.
It is my responsibility to:
-
examine the financial statements under seiction 145 of the 2011 Act;
-
follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commission under
section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act; and
-
state whether particular matters have come to my attention.
This report, including my statement, has been prepared for and only for the charity's Trustees as a
body. My work has been undertaken so that I might state to the charity's Trustees those matters I am
required to state to them in an independent examiner's report and for no other purpose. To the fullest
extent permitted by law, I do not accept or assume responsibility to anyone other than the charity and
the charity's Trustees as a body for my examination work, for this report, or for the statements I have
made.
Basis of independent examiner's report
My examination was carried out in accordance with the general directions given by the Charity
Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a
comparison of the financial statements presented with those records. It also includes consideration of
any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as Trustees
concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would
be required in an audit and consequently ncj opinion is given as to whether the financial statements
present a 'true and fair view' and the report \a limited to those matters set out in the statement below.
Independent examiner's statement
In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:
which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements:
•
to keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the 2011 Act; and
•
to prepare financial statements which accord with the accounting records and comply
with the accounting require Tients of the 2011 Act have not been met; or
to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding
of the accounts to be reached.
