It is my great privilege to present to the
Olympic Family here in Doha this unique
edition of “Olympic Encyclopedia”.
Since it’s creation in 1894 the International Olympic Committee is constantly
developing and Olympic Movement turned
into the most widespread, influential and
progressive movement on the globe in the
21st century.
During these 120 years Olympic Movement has saved up unique experience
and information.
All this deserves and has to be transferred by Olympic Encyclopaedia to the future generations.
Olympic Encyclopaedia I am presenting now has been created in Latvia by the
team led by Olympic Historian Mr. Genadijs
Maricevs. He is collecting and researching
facts and figures from all aspects of Olympic Movement for more than 50 years.
IOC Olympic Studies Centre, more than
120 NOCs, archives of Olympic cities,
Olympic historians and a vast number of
other persons and institutions assisted to
our efforts by providing necessary information.
As a result you can see the first ever
printed edition of Olympic Encyclopaedia
on such level, published in English by the
Latvian Olympic Committee in 2016.
The basis of creation of Olympic Encyclopaedia is the Olympic Charter - the
main document of the Olympic Movement.
Names of chapters of the Olympic Encyclopedia are the same as names of chapters of the Olympic Charter.
The sources of information published
therein are official documents only.
You can find included in the Olympic Encyclopedia full data on the Olympic Movement and Olympic Games, IOC Presidents,
Members and sessions, IFs, NOCs and
their presidents, Olympic Order holders
and other outstanding people within to the
Movement as well as biographies, photos
and the results of all more than 130’000
Olympic athletes etc.
Printed Olympic Encyclopaedia could
easily be adapted by modern technologies
for electronic access on the internet, making it available for everybody worldwide.
I am confident that the existence of such
a serious universal edition as Olympic Encyclopedia is also relevant for the prestige
of IOC.
Ladies and gentlemen!
It is my great honour now to present first
copies specially made for IOC and ANOC
Presidents.
Dear President Bach – your personal copy
of the Olympic Encyclopedia!
Dear President Sheikh Ahmad – your personal copy directly from Latvia!
