CCHS Sustainability - Concord Public Schools

CCHS Sustainability
Our Goal:
To incorporate the sustainability
principles
of which the town of Concord
has adopted,
into the Concord Carlisle High
Sustainability Principles
for the Town of
Concord
1) Reduce dependence upon fossil fuels, underground metals,
and minerals;
2) Reduce dependence upon synthetic chemicals and other
manufactured substances;
3) Reduce encroachment upon nature; and
4) Meet human needs fairly and efficiently; and to ask the
Town Manager and Department Heads to report on methods
and successes in implementing sustainable principles and
balancing reductions in order to meet human needs fairly and
You can now eat lunch at CCHS without throwing anything away . . .
Except for . . .
Milk cartons! . . . and they can’t be recycled!
and our food waste!
We want
to...
➢Reduce waste
➢Be part of a truly green
community
➢Make a conscious effort
to be more
environmentally friendly
➢Live well in a place
the “How”
1. By converting to bulk milk & a
dispenser.
Bulk milk = no waste
Compared to cartons….
24 cartons per crate
5 crates per day
= 600 cartons per week
= 21,600 cartons per year
1 carton weighs 0.5 ounces
We throw away 656 pounds of cartons annually.
CA uses a dispenser, why
shouldn’t CC?
Studies at Thurston County Schools:
-On average students who drinks milk from a carton throws away about 2 gallons
a year.
-This is 5x more milk wasted than a student that drinks from a cup.
-Less spills.
-Reduction in the recyclable items.
Each age group drinks a different milk serving size.
Students can be encouraged to drink the amount of milk they need.
Spoiled milk problem !
33/50 negative reactions to the carton milk...
According to the survey, over 25% of the milk bought is spoiled.
"I stopped buying the regular milk because it was always spoiled, so then I started
buying the chocolate milk." - Sydney
"I bought one carton of milk and it was spoiled and now I don't buy milk." - Nick

Bulk milk = less
money
Bulk milk cost (each order): $23.65
Carton cost: $0.65
5 gallons per bag = 640 ounces
8 ounce servings
8 ounce servings = 80 people
$0.65 per person
$0.30 per person
+
$51.60 for long term use of 120 cups
Milk carton cost is over 2 times the bulk milk cost per person!!
Cartons occupy a lot of dumpster
space as well...
Taking the cartons out of the equation will make it possible to eliminate another
dumpster...
2. By partnering with local
farms to use our organic
waste as compost.
Other businesses in Concord use
compost services!
Cost:
2 pick ups a week
2 barrels, 12 dollars per barrel
$48 per week
Costs:
Cost per collection = $47.00 per dumpster
Each dumpster is emptied twice a week Sept through June
The yearly savings from eliminating 1 of the 3 dumpsters is $4,477.22.
We now have 2 dumpsters… why not eliminate one more?

Pros
Compost
Milk
➢ Less waste
➢ Reusing (farm has more
nutrients for growing crops)
➢ Reduction in dumpster pickups
➢ We would then throw
nothing away (scrape it into
a container instead of the
disposal)

➢
Throw nothing away
Cost savings
Eliminate spoiled milk :-)
More efficient refrigeration
