The Salerno’s Story
Who are the Salerno’s…
One of Chicago’s favorite Pizza names for the past five decades. My grandparents Rosario and
Francesca Salerno resided in Castrolibero, Cosenza, in the region of Calabria, Italy in the early
1950’s. They had five son’s (Vincenzo, Arnaldo, Antonio, Joseph, and Adamo) being raised on
a farm in a two bedroom home with no running water or electricity and a separate outhouse.
The brothers made the best of their young childhood and limited opportunities while in
Cosenza. In 1957, my grandparents brought their family to America in hopes of finding a
better place filled with opportunities for their children. They arrived at Ellis Island, NY by boat
and ultimately settled here in Chicago, IL.
Salerno’s began their journey in the Pizza business when brothers Vincenzo and Arnaldo opened the
Berwyn Tavern in 1966 on the corner of 16th Street and Wesley, in Berwyn, IL and shortly thereafter,
Joseph joined them in this venture. Ultimately they changed the name to Salerno's Restaurant on 16th
Street. All of the brothers and “Nonna” Francesca began preparing their pizza recipe from the old
country with Nonna rolling the dough with a broken broom stick and served their thick-crust pizza to
their loyal patrons. In a short time the small narrow restaurant became famous and the lines grew with
people waiting to get their hands on the fastest growing frenzy in Chicago.
The Next Chapter of Salerno’s Pizza…
As Salerno’s continued growing as Chicago’s best pizza gaining high recognition for their high quality and unique thick-crust
pizza, the brothers started planning their expansion. Antonio and Adamo joined the family business and the
five Salerno brothers opened several locations throughout Chicagoland and as far as Gilbert, AZ. The success
of the Salerno brand came from the use of high quality products and creating a very unique dough and sauce
that one would recognize in a blind taste test. As you read many of the “about us” stories from many large
pizza restaurants what they all have in common are the comments of using premium products and their
commitment to quality. Salerno’s also believes in these attributes however, what makes us different is that our
recipe calls for an over generous portion of these premium products which pays dividends
with every bite our customers take! This, in my opinion, is why very few pizza companies
even come close to the quality of a Salerno’s Pizza. Salerno’s pizza has been recognized as
“Chicago’s Best” by many trade and media companies over the past almost 50 years!
The Next Generation…
All of the Salerno brothers have children that have learned the family business over their childhood and early adult life while working side
by side with our parents in the restaurants. It is now our turn to continue the values we learned from our fathers and keep the “Salerno”
name at the top of the pizza world. Over the past many years we have seen a drastic change in the Pizza industry with increased
competition from the small family owned to several new chain pizza companies entering the marketplace. There is the current trend of
flat breads and brick oven pizza that brings yet another challenge for the traditional pizza industry. Salerno’s remains committed to
delivering real Chicago style pizza to our customers. Evviva! is an expansion of the Salerno brand and we
remain committed to delivering quality just as our fathers have done for many years! We have added
several different items such as Gluten Free Pizza and Pastas to our menu to meet this growing demand from
consumers. As our slogan states, “Bringing Old School Taste to The Next Generation” is what we stand
committed to and our goal is to create new memories while remembering old ones with every bite our
customers take.
