The major historian of the reign of Justinian is Procopius, whose three works survive. They
remain controversial! Volumes I-V contain the Wars - in the sequence Persian (2 books),
Vandal (2 books) and Gothic (3 books) with book 8 an update in all three theatres. Volume
VI contains the Secret History/Anecdota and Volume VII the Buildings. These volumes offer
complete translations but almost nothing in terms of commentary:
Procopius - H. B. Dewing, Procopius, 2014
Book | See 'Buildings', 'History of the Wars' (books i; ii; iii.9-20; v.5-11, 14; vi.11-13,
16-30; vii, 14, 38, 40; viii.1-17, 25) and 'Secret History'.
For recent translations, see also:
The Wars of Justinian - H. B. Dewing, Anthony Kaldellis, Ian Mladjov, Procopius, 2014
Book | Available in the Library and as an e-book. A. Kaldellis has recently published his
own translation which is based on Dewing but has an introduction, notes and maps. G.
Greatrex is also busy preparing his own translation and commentary which promises to be
much fuller!
