COVENANT HEALTH FOUNDATION 2015 ANNUAL REPORT GIVE. CREATE. HOPE. MISSION The mission of Covenant Health is to extend Christian ministry by caring for the “Whoever loves much, performs much, whole person – body, mind and spirit – and by working with others to improve and can accomplish much, and what is health and quality of life in our communities. done in love is done well.” -VINCENT VAN GOGH VISION We bring people together to provide compassionate care, promote health improvement and create healthy communities. VALUES Dignity, Excellence, Service, Justice. DEAR FOUNDATION FRIENDS, What an exciting year for the ministry of Covenant Health Foundation. We have been blessed and have passed along those blessings to our patients. There were so many wonderful happenings to choose from this past year, it is impossible to pick only one. For example, Covenant employees donated more than $700,000 out of their own paychecks to Covenant Cares, which funded items like two critical care cribs for the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. The Keeping the Covenant building campaign kicked off with a celebration on March 24. This campaign is the cornerstone for $450 million worth of projects including a new West Tower, major renovations to Joe Arrington Cancer & Research & Treatment Center, and Covenant Medical Group’s newest outreach, Northwest Clinic. I invite you to set up a time to visit the Foundation office, and allow the staff to show you firsthand, the exciting things happening here at Covenant. Thank you for supporting our ministry, donating your time, partnering with us, joining us in prayer, and envisioning our future with us. Ben Edwards Board Chair, Covenant Health Foundation At Covenant Health, we consider our mission of treating the body, mind, and spirit, in everything we do. Whether that is comforting a young child who broke a bone while jumping off the couch or praying with a person who is at the end of their time on earth, we are here to provide Christian healing to our West Texas and Eastern New Mexico neighbors. We know we have the most talented health care staff in the region; now it’s time to provide the facilities and resources worthy of the level of care our patients deserve. It is with that mindset that we kicked off the Keeping the Covenant campaign with our employees first. We believe in our mission and that our personal giving to the campaign will inspire others to give. Our investments are in key service lines or areas of opportunity – cancer, women’s services, children, and community health. Consistent with our transition to a population health management approach to care, Covenant will deliver primary care and other outpatient services closer to where residents live and work. Thank you for helping us Keep the Covenant. We ask that you pray for continued blessings upon our ministries, especially in this exciting time of growth and change. Jessica was an 18-year-old senior at Frenship High School who happened to be dissecting an animal in biology class that day. She got dizzy, went to get a drink of water, then passed out and hit her head on the floor. What happened next turned into a two-month roller coaster. JACOB PICON Jacob Picon was on his way to classes at Lubbock High School when his car hydroplaned and slammed into a light pole. The pole came crashing down on his car, badly injuring him. Jacob cracked two vertebrae and his pelvis, broke his fibula, crushed his kidney and spleen, and tore his aorta. Jessica came to Covenant where Dr. Harold Smith and Dr. Cecil Fincher performed a craniotomy to save her life. After her time in surgical ICU, she was transferred to Heart Center 5 Neuro, where Covenant nurse Brooke Phillips entered her life. According to Jolyn, Brooke and Jessica shared an instant connection. He wanted the emergency personnel to take him to Covenant Hospital where his sister, Jessica, is a nurse. Jacob endured two major surgeries and was in the hospital nine days before he was sent home to recover. His family credits the doctors and nurses at Covenant for his successful recovery. “During Jacob’s stay at Covenant he received amazing care. I was and am still so grateful he was here, and I feel strongly Covenant is where he needed to be in order to have such an incredible outcome. I appreciate everything the entire care team did for my brother, and I am so proud to be a part of such a fantastic health system,” said Jessica, who has been a NICU nurse for four years. “Brooke is the sweetest, most compassionate nurse. She is so calm and caring. When Jessica was in pain and wasn’t feeling well, Brooke was there to comfort her. We felt like she was a part of our family,” said Jolyn. Jessica Wilkins at prom Jacob Picon & Jessica Picon Jessica spent many weeks in rehab, and in spite of having to finish her studies outside of the classroom, was named Prom Queen, and received her high school diploma, with honors, along with the rest of her class. She is now a proud Texas Tech Red Raider entering her freshman year, where she plans to double major in business marketing and public relations. Brooke is very happy to see the progress Jessica has made, which her doctors have called a miracle. Jacob has recovered fully with no complications from his accident. He is now in college studying pre-engineering and plans to transfer to a university to major in mechanical engineering and minor in computer science. “Being a nurse is so much more than passing medications and assessing patients. The thing I love most about my job is being able to connect with people on a much deeper level. Jessica is a prime example of being at a low place in her life and I was able to make a difference in her stay by doing the simplest things. I am honored to know this family and to have taken care of Jessica,” said Brooke. “Thank you, Covenant, for showing me what being a nurse is really about.” “Dr. Eastman, my other doctors, and nurses were amazing. I am not a good patient, but the nurses were very patient with the patient,” he jokingly said. Jacob is now looking forward to a bright future. “My doctor told me 90 percent of people with a torn aorta die at the scene. Of that 10 percent, another 50 percent don’t survive the first 24 hours. Now, two years later, I am a freshman at South Plains College,” Jacob said. “Without the help of God and the doctors at Covenant, I would not be here today.” That is why Jolyn nominated Brooke for the Daisy Award, presented by The DAISY Foundation. Brooke was chosen to receive the award, given in July, and Jessica was there with her parents, Jolyn and Jerry, to present it. The studio is a safe and supportive space for children to be creative, express feelings, or just have fun, especially kids who may have a chronic illness. The songwriting and recording studio has musical instruments to play and explore including guitars, ukuleles, a keyboard, and an electric drum kit. A music therapist assists patients to improvise music, write original songs or record their own CD to keep. Creating music is a form of stress relief and distraction for patients. The studio is located near the Ronald McDonald rooms on the first floor. This house concert was a first of what we plan to be an annual occasion. Lubbock native, singer-songwriter Amanda Shires and her husband Jason Isbell, awarded Americana Artist of the year, Song of the Year, and Album of the year, entertained the crowd with an intimate concert. Amanda is the daughter of Marguerite Fallon, Vice President of Covenant Children’s. Proceeds went to Covenant Children’s. TIMMY’S PLAYROOM The Tim Tebow Foundation brought the seventh official Timmy’s Playroom to Covenant Children’s, which was the first such playoom in Texas. Timmy’s Room officially opened July 2015 and is located near the cafeteria. The space provides developmental play opportunities for children ages three and older, and contributes to patient/family coping, satisfaction, and the healing process. It fills an age gap and meets developmental needs the hospital’s other two playrooms (Teen Town and Lindsey’s Park) are not able to meet. Timmy’s Playroom is completely customized with a football field floor, football chairs, custom wall graphics, a helmet-shaped table for arts and crafts, specially-built lockers, a Bible verse banner, and a jumbo-tron entertainment center, stocked with the latest video games, DVDs and electronics. 16th Annual Gilded GALA September 26, 2014 Chairs: Elise and Bronson Blodgett. Entertainment: On the Rocks and Cactus Theater Raised: $204,000 Proceeds benefit Joe Arrington Cancer Center. LINDSEY’S PARK In December 2014, Covenant Children’s opened the doors to the new Lindsey’s Park on the third floor of the hospital. The Callaway family and friends have donated more than $300,000 worth of toys and monetary contributions to the children’s hospital in honor of their daughter, sister, and friend, Lindsey Callaway, who passed away from cancer in 2001 at the age of 16. Lindsey’s Park is a fun, open, colorful, and carefree space for staff or families to use for play or cognitive assessment. 2015 COVENANT HE ALTH FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT 7 EVENTS VOLUNTEERS continued 2015 STORYTELLERS April 11, 2015 Chairs: Kelly and Terry Crofoot Vice-chairs: Wendy and Nevan Baldwin and Kathy and Grady Terrill Songwriters: Matraca Berg, Kimmie Rhodes and Leslie Satcher Hosted by Jay Boy Adams at the Cactus Theater Raised: $146,500 Proceeds benefit Covenant Children’s. KEVIN ATKINS SHEELA NOBLE A common thread among many Covenant volunteers is a story involving a caring nurse, doctor or employee. Kevin Atkins serves on the Covenant Foundation board as the immediate past chairman, and prior to that served on the Children’s board. What brought him to this point began with an appointment with his physician in the fall of 2008. Sheela Noble lived through an experience that gave her a vision of not what was, but what could be. She was at St. Mary’s Hospital in Lubbock with her young son, who had a heart defect and was sick. As a single mom, she was tired and needed a break in the open air. Kevin put his wife, Gay, on a plane to Australia and then made an appointment with Dr. Dale Little because he wasn’t feeling normal and was having trouble controlling his blood pressure. He had told the story many times of his mother dying from a brain aneurism at the same age he was at the time. Kevin commented to the doctor that he had never been checked for an aneurism. Some tests were administered and before he had gotten back to his office, Dr. Todd Samuels, a radiologist and personal friend, had read his report and called him to say he had an aneurism deep in his brain. Kevin waited to tell his wife the news of needing surgery until she returned from her trip. Dr. Tom Windisch specializes in coiling procedures which in Kevin’s case, involved inserting a coil through an artery in the leg and threading it to the brain. 26TH ANNUAL MAYORS’ BEANS AND CORNBREAD LUNCHEON March 6, 2015 Chairs: Andrew Montgomery and Becky Postar with BBVA Compass Raised: $103,430 Proceeds benefit direct patient care at Hospice of Lubbock. “Twenty-four hours after my wife returned, Dr. Windisch performed the surgery and absolutely saved my life. And I was able to have my procedure close to home – the alternatives were going to NYC, Chicago, or Dallas,” said Kevin. “Five years later the procedure was repeated to check for other issues and everything looked good. End of story.” Kevin continued, “To have the accessibility and availability of that quality of physicians and staff who are trained to do all of this is quite remarkable. I had a tremendous experience with tremendous staff. Covenant goes to the trouble of providing this quality of service, where many do not.” “I remember sitting in his hospital room and thinking how nice it would be to go outside and get some fresh air in a garden. It was then that I thought ‘One day I will somehow see that happen’,” Sheela said. Fast forward twenty years and Sheela is now a member of the Children’s Task Force. She and her husband, Gary, have been faithful givers to the Covenant Foundation for several years, and when retirement from a pharmaceuticals sales job freed up her time, she quickly accepted the chance to give back. Sheela was nearing the completion of master gardener classes when she was invited by Foundation staff to join the task force. The task force is comprised of eight community members who assist in fundraising efforts for the Children’s, and also help with special projects like the healing garden. Sheela is working on the planning and eventual creation of this garden. “It will provide hope, and that can mean many different things; a child who sees a butterfly on a flower, a parent who needs a break by themselves. When you plant a seed and that first leaf comes out, the spark on a child’s face is incredible. It shows life,” Sheela said. At Covenant Health our vision is to give hope to our patients, and we achieve that with the help of volunteers like Sheela. Sheela is married to Gary Noble and mother to two grown sons with a grandchild on the way. Kevin owns a wholesale distributing auto parts/glass company. He came to Lubbock by way of Tennessee and is a Texas Tech graduate. He and his wife, Gay, are parents to grown children Seth and Aaron. When asked why he chose to serve Covenant, Kevin replied, “Covenant treats with science, love, compassion and faith. Employees serve in an environment that is bigger than their job.” Kevin & Gay Atkins and family Sheela and Gary Noble 2015 COVENANT HE ALTH FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT 9 HOSPICE Hospice of Lubbock, founded in 1987, provides compassionate end-oflife care to patients with terminal conditions. Hospice of Lubbock is the region’s only non-profit hospice that provides care for all patients, regardless of age, diagnosis or payor source. The Mayors’ Beans & Cornbread Luncheon and Light Up a Life serve as the major fundraisers to support the more than $250,000 in free care provided. Lubbock and surrounding area mayors sponsor the Mayors’ Beans & Cornbread Luncheon. The community luncheon raised more than $100,000 in 2015 to help support our charity care and program development. Held the first Friday in March, the event is known for River Smith’s beans and cornbread, the sounds of performers from the Cactus Theater, and the community coming together to support our patients and their families. The first treatment was given in 1995 and twenty years of cancer care and Christian service was celebrated with a breakfast on July 23. Matt Crow, a former JACC patient and cancer survivor, gave his testimony about the cancer treatment he received. He was able to receive care close to home and he said the doctors and nurses became family to him, as his family lives out of state. It is for our patients like Matt, who become family, that Covenant is making major renovations to the cancer center. All of the changes are derived by asking the question “How can we help our patients maintain their dignity and receive the best possible care?” It begins with Matt Crow transforming the public treatment rooms to private suites, and also includes a new chapel, prayer garden, and centralized social services area. Caregivers and family are not forgotten either, as a business room will be added so they can keep up with their daily work demands. A new Gamma Knife and linear accelerator will be added soon. The pediatric oncology area is already complete and children now receive their cancer treatments in a separate child-friendly area. Proceeds from the 2014 Covenant Foundation Gala supported the renovations. There are many opportunities to be a part of the transformation and leave a legacy of hope. The completed renovations will make JACC competitive with other well-known cancer treatment centers around the country. We look forward to providing our patients with the best technology and treatments available. Light Up a Life, held during November and December, helps fund our charity care program. A tree is lit with the traditional blue lights of Hospice of Lubbock as a means of remembrance, celebration and thanksgiving. Community leaders, family members and friends join the Hospice of Lubbock staff to light the tree on the first Wednesday in December. Hospice of Lubbock Board of Directors serve to provide governance and oversight to the ministry. Made up of community members, the board is dedicated to supporting the ministry and ensuring quality end-of-life care in Lubbock and the South Plains. Board members raise money to support our charity care program, overall operations and our endowment. Covenant Levelland Foundation raised $111,000 in FY2015 through grants, direct mail, special events, its employee campaign and other donations. The 7th Annual Gala, “The James Bond 007th” was chaired by Dr. Benjamin and Cybil Farr. The event included all the makings of a great international secret agent night including a Casino Royale, “shaken, not stirred” signature drinks, iconic black Bond sunglasses, and a band from Fort Worth called Trey & the Tritones. Proceeds will benefit the Capital Campaign. Covenant Levelland Foundation provided $242,000 in equipment to the hospital in FY2015. This included bladder scanners, cystoscopes and cameras, a jaundice meter, panda warmers, and an ultrasound machine. Funds were also used for employee training and nursing scholarships. The 12th Annual Golf Tournament raised funds to promote diabetes education. Each contestant was tested for the disease and as a result, two were found to have diabetes and instructed as to what their next steps should be. HK2020 (Healthy Kids 2020) is an ongoing program supported by the Foundation which includes field trips, programs and meetings focused on improving children’s health and the health of our community. This year the foundation purchased camping equipment and joined Wayland Baptist University in hosting a campout in hopes of making it an annual event. The 14th Annual Gala, Medieval Masquerade, raised $83,000 in net revenue. More than 300 attendees participated in the gala, which featured a silent auction, a live auction, and several “medieval street vendors”. The event was hosted at the Mallet Events Center in Levelland. The Covenant Cares employee campaign raised more than $23,000 in FY2015. Covenant Cares is an employee-lead campaign and the funds are administered by a front-line staff advisory group, for equipment and items to enhance the patient experience, or enhance the employee experience. Covenant Hospital Plainview Auxiliary is a vital contributor to the hospital. Through popcorn sales, several employees benefitted from this scholarship program to further their medical education. The annual Christmas card project also brought in funds to purchase recliners and rockers for patient rooms. Covenant Plainview employees are so generous. Seventy percent of the staff donated to the employee-driven campaign, Covenant Cares. The funds generated are used for unbudgeted programs and equipment. The hospital has outgrown its current facilities and will be remodeling and expanding. FY2016 starts a five-year capital campaign with a $3.5 million goal. This campaign is the most significant financial investment since the merger seventeen years ago of Methodist and St. Mary of the Plains Hospitals. KEEPING THE COVENANT STEERING COMMITTEE The Keeping the Covenant steering committee is a group of community leaders who are assisting the Foundation development team through philanthropic efforts to raise a portion of the funds needed for new construction and renovations. These projects are our answer to what our patients, physicians, employees and community have said they want and need from Covenant. Improvements are already underway that include a new West Tower where women’s services will be relocated from the Children’s Hospital. There will be a new welcoming public entrance, new cafeteria and dining area, a free-standing chapel, a complete renovation of Joe Arrington Cancer Center, improvements to the Children’s Hospital and Covenant Plainview, and new clinics in the community. These projects will position Covenant as the clear leader in providing health care and as the best place to work and practice medicine. The vision of the facility design is to help reduce staff stress and fatigue, increase effectiveness in care delivery, and improve patient safety and overall healthcare quality. We invite you to join us in prayer that we continue to provide our community with quality healthcare and treat our patients… mind, body and spirit. LEGACY GIVING Honor what you value most today and communicate those values to future generations. The Covenant Foundation’s Legacy Society was established to recognize and honor donors who have expressed their desire to provide a bequest or other testamentary gift through their will, trust, beneficiary designation, or other estate planning vehicle. KEEPING THE COVENANT As we look to the future of Covenant, there will be many opportunities to give to our ministry. There are various needs as we build the new West Tower and renovate JACC, as well as other important projects. The development staff at the Foundation would love to visit with you about naming rights and other levels of giving. TRIBUTES AND CAREGIVER RECOGNITION Create a lasting tribute honoring a loved one or extraordinary caregiver with a gift to the Covenant Health Foundation. The Foundation will promptly send an acknowledgment of your thoughtfulness to whomever you have chosen to honor. MEMORIALS Offer condolences to a friend or family member who has lost a loved one with a memorial gift to the Covenant Health Foundation. An acknowledgment of your thoughtfulness will be sent to whomever you have designated. For more information or to make a donation, please call 806.725.6089. 2015 COVENANT HE ALTH FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT 27 The mission of Covenant Health Foundation is to develop resources through acceptance and management of charitable gifts that support Covenant Health in extending Christian ministry by caring for the whole person – body, mind and spirit – and by working with others to improve health and quality of life in our communities.
