Losing power can be especially difficult on the people we serve. FFLC has a role in disasters — to continue food distribution to our partner agencies. We know we’ll be needed, so we have worked to raise our level of preparedness with staff training, securing grants to purchase a generator and providing emergency preparedness training for our partners. Emergency responders will be overwhelmed during disasters, so make sure you have your home supplies shored up. Readiness starts with personal preparedness. UPCOMING EVENTS Thanks to generous support from Leadership Donors who donate $1,000 or more annually, we are able to serve so many people who need our help. Individual Leadership Donors provide 42% of our total operating revenue. Their generous financial support sustains critical programs that provide food and education to thousands of Lane County families and individuals in need. We are so grateful for the passion, enthusiasm and dedication of our many volunteers who donated more than 74,000 hours annually. EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS Are you ready for an earthquake, ice storm or flood? Like it or not, these natural hazards could hit Lane County at any time. To make getting ready easy and convenient for you, Lane County came up with 8 fast and simple steps. Once completed, you’ll be on your way to enjoying life without that “what if” worry in the back of your mind. Personalize them to your family’s special needs and preferences and you’ll be better off than ever. POWERED BY GENEROSITY With that financial support we were able to grow our capacity to serve seniors in our community. This past year we added Meals on Wheels to our list of innovative programs, serving clients in the Eugene area. We also continue to increase the number of seniors served by our Senior Grocery Program. Through programs like these, we are helping more seniors get the nutrition they need while allowing more seniors to stay in their homes. When the temperature drops below 30 degrees between November 15 and March 31, Egan sites activate and shelter people without homes in an effort to ensure that they have a warm and safe place to sleep. With your help, we’ve been working with the Egan Warming Centers since they first opened. Karen Roth, FFLC Child Nutrition Programs Manager, manages our relationship with the Egan Centers. “FFLC has always provided food for breakfast and dinner at Egan,” said Roth. Each year, Egan expands to more sites, and more sites mean more food is needed. “Last year I worked on Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. If they’re open, I’m here picking food for them from the warehouse.” “Without FFLC we would not be able to provide food for our guests,” said Egan Director Shelley Corteville. “Egan guests are freezing cold when they come in,” she said. “They really need a hot meal to even be able to get warmed up and go to sleep. Typically they’re undernourished to begin with, so giving people a hot meal not only allows their body to warm up, it gives them some good nutrition which they desperately need.” “FFLC provides a beautiful gift of good, healthy food for our guests,” said Corteville. “It just makes a huge difference in their attitude. It lets them know that other people see them as human. It gives them back some dignity.” standard PMS 1815C BLACK MISSION We accomplish our mission by soliciting, collecting, rescuing, growing, preparing and packaging food for distribution through a countywide network of social service agencies and programs, and through public awareness, education and community advocacy. Housing costs, especially for renters, drain already strained budgets, leaving little money for everything else — including food — forcing working families to seek help. For every 100 Lane County families with extremely low incomes, there are only 14 affordable housing units available, according to the Oregon Housing Alliance. One out of three renters in Lane County pay more than 50% of their income in rent. For renters with extremely low incomes, that’s three out of four.
