Charlotte Madison /Resource Teacher at U.H.M.S. Jennifer Cannataro /Language Arts at U.H.M.S. Type of Lesson- Re-Teaching 1. Objective-The New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards that will be addressed are: Writing- W7.1/ W7.4/ W7.5 Speaking and Listening- SL7.1/ SL7.4/ SL7.5 Language- L7.2/ L7.3/ L7.4/ L7.5/ L7.6 *SWBAT identify, define and write a persuasive essay. 2. Sequence- (District curriculum, scope and sequence) We are preparing the students’ to answer different types essays for the NJASK. Students must be able to define, identify and understand how to write a persuasive essay. The students will also be able to use terminology; format and figurative language to create a persuasive essay by using higher level thinking. 3. Teaching Strategies- My goal is to have the students understand and identify significant parts of a persuasive essay. I will use visual, kinesthetic and verbal examples to obtain my goal. Listening, watching and comprehending power point presentation will engage students. I will observe the students to make sure they stay on task and comprehend the information. The student’s will be taking re-taught and complete an activity to show their understanding of a persuasive essay. I will be walking around the classroom to make sure students are on task with the lesson. 4. Assessment-Playing a game called Four Corners(learned in my workshop)will be played to see immediate comprehension of the lesson.Reviewing the student’s final destination in the game Four Corner will give me an immediate assessment of student’s comprehension.Completing the persuasive essay assignment will achieve my goal of the lesson. Once this is graded, I can evaluate if the lesson needs to be re-taught or reviewed in a different way, different setting or small group instruction. 5. Concerns- To keep the students’ fully engaged so behavioral issues do not occur. To date there has been no behavior issues. In the first place, uniforms can get expensive. Last, but not least, having all of the students dressed the same will help avoid bullying and students getting picked on. To begin with, uniforms provide a safe environment for students and teachers alike. Last of all, teachers’ salaries would have to be adjusted during an economic crisis. Hook (Corner Three) Wearing school uniforms is like wearing steel straight jackets. (Simile) How would you feel if someone chose your clothes for you each and every day? (Rhetorical Question) How would you feel if all your pictures, photo albums and videos you’ve kept during your life got destroyed or even the house you grew up in? (Rhetorical Question) Imagine yourself standing in line at the lunch counter at school. (Creating a scene) A dress code can be defined as stealing a student’s freedom of personal choice. (Definition) Compositional Risk (Quote/Statistic/ Example) (Corner Four) As per the New Jersey Government web site, 75% of schools in the state wear uniforms. (Statistic) For example, if he had been wearing a uniform, the teacher could have picked him out of the crowd. (Example) For example, students from China perform better in all areas of education. (Example) For example, every pair of uniform pants costs $30 dollars. (Example) Governor Christie said, “Uniforms deter from bullying in 97% of the schools that wear them.” (Quote)
