LOCAL AREA
Tidworth - situated on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire and forms part of the Salisbury Plain Super
Garrison. Perham Down is situated a mile outside of Tidworth. Both are rural locations but
easily accessed from the A303, the main arterial route from London, and the M3 to the West
Country. The Tidworth Leisure Centre offers a wide range of sporting activities with a
swimming pool and flumes, squash courts, tennis courts and gyms in addition to the many
activities run by the Community Development Worker for all ages. The Leisure Centre also
houses a cafe, the library, Caterpillars Day Care, youth club, hairdressers and beauty salon.
Bulford Camp - located next to Bulford village and Durrington, both villages with limited
shopping facilities. The small town of Amesbury is situated just 3 miles from Bulford Camp and
has a high street as well as supermarkets on the outskirts. Salisbury is the nearest large town,
with Basingstoke and Southampton, approx 1 hour away, offering more extensive shopping.
Close by are the World Heritage sites of Stonehenge and Woodhenge. Other destinations
nearby include the New Forest, Beaulieu Motor Museum, Longleat Safari Park and various
National Trust Properties. Andover and Salisbury are the nearest large towns.
Basingstoke and Southampton are approx 45 minutes and an hour away respectively and offer
more extensive shopping. Close by are the World Heritage sites of Stonehenge and
Woodhenge. Other destinations nearby include the New Forest, Beaulieu Motor Museum,
Longleat Safari Park, Paulton’s Park and various National Trust Properties. The nearest
beaches are approximately an hour away.

LOCATION FACILITIES - BULFORD
Bulford has a small shopping precinct offering 2 convenience shops, Post Office, military tailor,
hairdressers, café, Indian restaurant and various take aways.
The Beeches Family Centre on Bulford Road houses Noah’s Ark crèche and nursery, the
Beeches Coffee Shop and a HIVE as well as a wide range of activities for parents, carers and
their children - from “Stay and Play” sessions to Skilled for Health parenting classes and

MiniBugs mother and toddler groups. Various function rooms are available for hire.
The Haig Centre on Ward Road just off Bulford Road houses AWS, the Haig Nursery (all day
child care) and Health House where you will find the midwives and health visitors.
Bulford Community Learning Centre in Kandy Road is operated by 10 AEC and provides
Courses for dependants and service personnel.
Bulford camp is comprised of two main barracks, Ward and Picton, within which you will also
find Kiwi, Gordon and Wing Barracks. The following facilities are available within the barracks:
medical centre (dependants & service personnel), Super Diner (open from 0800hrs to
2300hrs), Junior Ranks Club, Local Shop, 2 Super Gyms in addition to the individual unit
gyms and a swimming pool. PAYD is not operated.

Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) provides an allocations service through the
electronic 1132 application system and the main point of contact for customers is the Housing

Due to the large number of units in this area SFA is allocated across a wide range of areas the
majority of which are:
Amesbury, Andover, Boscombe Down, Bulford, Collingbourne Ducis, Ford, Larkhill,

Winterbourne Gunner.

TRAVEL
To Tidworth by car: There is one main access to the Tidworth barracks which is VCP 2.
To gain entry to the camp, please report to the guardroom (Tel: 01980 650577) at the main
entrance VCP2, which is signposted.
Approaching from the A303
 Leave the A303 at exit signposted Tidworth, Cholderton, Marlborough, Hungerford
 Take the first exit off the next roundabout onto the A338 towards Tidworth, Hungerford &
Shipton Bellinger
 Continue to follow the A338 through Shipton Bellinger into Tidworth
 At the first traffic light turn left and left again at the next T-Junction
 The Main Entrance (VCP2) is signposted to the right.
To Perham Down by car: Follow the directions above but at the traffic lights in Tidworth turn
right into Station Road. Follow this road out of Tidworth for approx 1.5 miles, Swinton Barracks
is on the left hand side.
To Bulford by car: Bulford is situated just off the A303 to the west of Andover.
If travelling west along the A303 heading towards Exeter, leave the A303 at Solstice Park
services (Bulford A3028).
 Go straight across first 2 roundabouts and turn right (third exit) at third roundabout
crossing over the A303.
 Turn right at next roundabout (third exit - signposted to Bulford Camp) and rejoin A303
direction Andover.
 Turn left at first exit signposted Bulford Camp.
If travelling east along to A303 heading towards London, once past the A345 ‘Countess’
roundabout, immediately after the Solstice Park services exit, take the next exit (Bulford
Camp).
 Travel along Amesbury Road (becomes Marlborough Road) and into Bulford Camp,
Picton Barracks is on the right hand side past the church and Ward on the left.
By train: The nearest manned train station with a taxi rank is in Andover (approx 10 miles),
Grateley station is closer but is unmanned and there is no taxi rank. Salisbury station is
another option. These stations are all on the direct line from London Waterloo. For information

HEALTHCARE
Tidworth: There are three surgeries serving Tidworth including a military surgery which can
be used by both serving personnel and dependants.
There are two civilian dental practices within Tidworth both of which provide. See the link
