ABOUT THE CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY (CSU) BOARD OF TRUSTEES
The California State University (CSU) Board of Trustees is the 25-member board that adopts regulations
and policies governing the entire California State University system. Board committees have authority
over educational policy, finance, campus planning, and facilities, among other areas that impact the
475,000 students of the CSU.
The composition of the CSU Board of Trustees includes:
• Five ex-officio members:
o
Governor of California
o
Lieutenant Governor of California
o
Speaker of the Assembly
o
Superintendent of Public Instruction
o
CSU Chancellor
• Sixteen Governor Appointees confirmed by two-thirds of the Senate
• One alumni association representative appointed by the Governor
• One CSU faculty member appoint by the Governor
• Two students appointed by the Governor
ABOUT THE CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY (CSU) STUDENT TRUSTEE
To better the California State University (CSU), two students serve as student trustees on the California
State University Board of Trustees. Students serve on staggered two-year terms; the first as a non-voting
member and the second as a voting member.
2017 Important Application Dates:

THE CSU STUDENT TRUSTEE APPOINTMENT PROCESS OVERVIEW
Each year, the California State Student Association (CSSA) is granted the opportunity to nominate at least
two, but no more than five CSU students to the California State Governor. At which time, the Governor
will select one student to serve in a two year term as a CSU Student Trustee.
Upon the application deadline, a CSSA review board will review all completed, on-time applications to
advance to the interview portion of the selection process. Those selected will be invited to interview with
a panel of representatives from the various CSU Associated Students organizations. The interview panel
will select a list of nominee to the Governor. The Office of the Governor will conduct interviews and
appoint one student to serve as the next CSU Student Trustee.
APPLICATION INFORMATION
Please carefully review all steps of the application process. CSU students interested in applying to serve as
the CSU Student Trustee will utilize the following process:
1. Ensure you have met and intend to meet the minimum requirements
• Must be a CSU student (undergraduate or graduate) for the entirety of the two-year term as
Student Trustee (through June 30, 2019) and maintain at least part-time student enrollment
status
o
Undergraduate Students: 6 semester or 9 quarter units per term
o
Graduate and Credential Students: 3 semester or 4 quarter units per term
• Must attain sophomore status (by units) by July 1, 2017.
• Must have a minimum 2.0 GPA and be in good standing with university
2. Complete ‘SECTION 1’ of the 2017 CSU Student Trustee Status Verification Form
3. Make an appointment with your campus’ Vice President for Student Affairs
• Your campus’ Vice President for Student Affairs are extremely busy so it is suggested that you
schedule a meeting as soon as possible
• If your campus does not have a Vice President for Student Affairs, make an appointment with
the Dean of Students
• When scheduling your appointment, please explain that you are requesting the they verify the
following information:
o
You will have attained at least sophomore (by units) status by July 1, 2017.
o Some campuses will not project into the future and certify that a student will have
current enrollment status or a certain number of units at a future time. For students at
those campuses, the verification may be the number of units the student is currently
enrolled in, plus a statement of how many units the student had accumulated as of the
end of the last term.
o
You are a student in good standing; and
o
Your current cumulative GPA is at least 2.0

4. Meet with your Vice President for Student Affairs or Dean of Students
• Ask your Vice President for Student Affairs to complete ‘SECTION 2’ of the 2017 CSU Student
Trustee Status Verification Form
•
Your portion of the 2017 CSU Student Trustee Status Verification Form must be completed before
meeting with your Vice President for Student Affairs or Dean of Students
5. Update and prepare your resume
• Be sure to include any and all work experience or internships you’ve held
• For readability, you are encouraged to save your resume as a PDF
• If you need assistance developing your resume, you are encouraged to visit your campus’ career
center
6. Write a short essay
• Write a response of no more than 750 words to the following prompt:
o
Explain your perception of the role the Board of Trustees plays in the California State
University, come of the challenges it current faces, and why you want to be a student
trustee.
• For readability, you are encouraged to save your essay as a PDF
7. Complete the 2017 CSU Student Trustee Application (DIGITAL PORTION)
• You may only submit the 2017 CSU Student Trustee Application (DIGITAL PORTION) application
utilizing the online form.
• You will upload your resume and essay response via 2017 CSU Student Trustee Application
(DIGITAL PORTION)
8. Letters of Recommendation
• You must submit two or three letters of recommendation with an additional copy of each letter
to support your application

Each letter should be placed in an envelope addressed (NOT MAILED) to:

9. Assemble your application
• The 2017 CSU Student Trustee Application is comprised of both a digital and physical materials.
Please note that all application physical materials must be received by the California State
Student Association Long Beach office by Monday, April 3, 2017 at 5:00PM via mail or delivery.
Please consider this when using mail or delivery services, as late application materials will not be
accepted.
• All of the following digital and physical materials are required for your application to be
considered.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Who should apply to be a Student Trustee?
Student Trustees are individuals who are dedicated to the success of the California State University
system and the 475,000 students. Individuals who are interested
How many Student Trustees will be selected?
The selection committee will provide the Governor with up to five nominations. The Governor then
appoints only one student trustee to serve for a two-year term.
What are some of the responsibilities of a Student Trustee?
Student Trustees are required to attend the CSU Board of Trustees meetings every other month in Long
Beach and monthly CSSA meetings located at various CSU campuses. The Student Trustees articulates the
positions, issues, and perspectives of CSU students. They also serve as liaison to the CSU Board of
Trustees and the state legislature regarding student needs.
Does the Student Trustee get their tuition waived?
Yes, the Student Trustee position requires a significant commitment and to make this opportunity more
accessible, during the Student Trustee’s term, their tuition is waived. This waiver does not include campus
and other fees.
Can I be a graduate student and be a Student Trustee?
Yes. As long as you meet all the requirements, you are eligible to serve as a Student Trustee.
Will I be excused from classes, projects, or other academic-related responsibilities if they conflict with
Student Trustee responsibilities?
No. Your academics are a priority and central to your service as a Student Trustee. If selected to serve as a
Student Trustee, you should work to create a schedule that will allow you to minimize the impact on your
academics. Any academic accommodation must be made between you and your faculty. It is not an
expectation that any faculty member would make accommodations for Student Trustee responsibilities.
Who pays for travel and other Student Trustee costs?
If appointed, all pre-approved travel will be covered by the Office of the Chancellor. Student Trustees may
have to pay for some expenses but will be reimbursed if they are pre-approved.

How can I submit the physical portion of my application?
You can submit the physical portion of your application (2017 CSU Student Trustee Status Verification
Form and letters of recommendation using a number of methods. You can use a number of United States
Postal Service delivery options, private courier services, or you may personally deliver your materials.
The office is open Monday thru Friday, from 9:00AM to 5:00PM. The office will be closed on Friday,
March 31, 2017 in observation of Cesar Chavez Day. Please consider holidays and delivery time as all
materials must be received by Monday, April 3, 2017 at 5:00PM.

How should I format the envelopes for my letters of recommendation?
Please use the following format when addressing your letters of recommendation. DO NOT SEND YOUR
