From the Pastor:
Just These Lines My Friends….We are in Eastertide Season and Spring has sprung! All
around us, we are seeing signs of new growth in God’s beautiful creation. The
gardeners among us are all a twitter over beds to plant and flowers and vegetables to
grow. Some have even wondered if we might begin a community garden. All of this
gardening conversation has me feeling at a loss; unfortunately, I have no “green
thumbs”! However, perhaps I can enter the conversation at another level. Gardening
has me thinking of another kind of growth – a spiritual one. A thoroughly Wesleyan
question would be: Are we growing in love of God and love of neighbor?
How can we till the soil of our spiritual lives? Through daily examen, confession and
pardon. How can we plant the seeds of Christian nurture? Reading the Scriptures,
praying daily, teaching children and youth the faith we profess and being humble
examples of the Christian walk. How can we help our spiritual lives to have ‘Sonshine’
to grow by and ‘Living Water’ for the parched places in our lives? In personal time with
God and worshipping with His people. How can we tend and weed the gardens of our
spiritual lives? Through coming together in spiritual conversations and accountability.
Our small group ministries and Sunday school classes provide a much-needed focus of
spiritual nurture – places where we can truly ‘know’ others and ‘be known’ by others.
How can we garden with others and plant gardens of spiritual nurture that call others to
participate? Our many missions invite ministries of love and service, demonstrating our
love for God and for neighbor.
If you are interested in getting a Ramsey communal garden growing, please speak with
me or call the church office. We would need a couple of champions to organize the
volunteer gifts of others. While I will leave my husband Brian to plant the tomatoes, I
hope to see you around the “New Creation” Garden of God’s Great Love and Grace for
all.
May the God of Resurrection bless you in a loving and creative way this Eastertide
season! As always, it is my great joy and blessing to be your Pastor and friend.
Pastor Deb
Dear Ramsey Friends & Family, Thank you for all
your love and kindness extended to me with my
recent “heart issues”. Thank you Pastor Deb for
all your phone calls and the beautiful prayer
shawl. Thanks to everyone for your phone calls,
food, cards and prayers. You are the best! With
Christian love, Pat Beville
Once again, we want to thank the people of Ramsey for all the cards,
calls and flowers you send to us! They mean so much! A special thanks
to Pastor Deb for her love and care. Perley and Cecil Goolsby

The time is getting closer for our annual “Spring Festival” and “Agape Yard Sale”!
The AGAPE class is collecting all pre-owned treasures (clothing, kitchen wares,
furniture, appliances, etc.) for the Yard Sale. The sale serves many functions,
including providing the surrounding community with household items and clothing
at reduced prices, creating a presence of caring in the community, and funding our
treasury for our missions. Please contact a class member if you need assistance in
getting items to church. We are starting to collect things now with some storage
available in the building. Beginning April 12, you may also bring your treasures to
the CLC gym.
The Community Spring Festival is scheduled for 9:30AM-1:30PM. It’s a day you don’t
want to miss! There will be games to play and food to eat and you can even try to
throw a pie at one of our pastors. Come and enjoy the day with our community
friends. Win a cake at the Cake Walk or win a prize at BINGO; no matter whether you
win or not, it will sure be fun trying! There will be a bounce house, petting zoo, and
pony rides for the kids as well as games and “Petunia” the clown. Come and join the
fun!
(And it’s not too late to sign up if you are interested in volunteering your time and
talent. Contact Sue Newman to sign up.)

Four Lessons of Good Friday
The Rev. James Martin, S.J., author of Jesus:
A Pilgrimage (HarperOne), writes that Jesus’
suffering and death almost 2,000 years ago
are very relevant to our 21st-century lives.
He says Good Friday teaches us that:
1. Physical and emotional suffering are part
of life;
2. Suffering isn’t always the result of sin;
3. Jesus was fully human — and thus
understands our humanity; and
4. Suffering isn’t the last word.
“The message of Good Friday is incomplete
without Easter,” Martin writes. “The story of
the Passion is not simply of a man being
brutally tortured, nailed to a cross and
executed by the Romans. It’s the story of a
man who turns himself fully over to the
Father’s will, trusts that something new will
come out of this offering and receives the
astonishing gift of new life.”

AGAPE YARD SALE and
SPRING FESTIVAL
Who wants to sell lemonade
to save lives?
Bishop Young Jin Cho is asking all churches in the
Virginia Conference to observe World Malaria Day —
Saturday, April 25 — by selling lemonade to raise
money for Imagine No Malaria and "sip your way to
saving lives." We can choose another date if we prefer.
This will be part of the Virginia Conference initiative,
approved at the 2014 Annual Conference session, to
raise enough money before 2015 Annual Conference to
save at least 100,000 lives from the deadly disease of
malaria. Every church and every United Methodist in the
Virginia Conference are urged to take part.
Mothers’
Day Insert
Once again, the
Kirkie Powell class
is sponsoring a
long-standing
tradition at Ramsey
– the Mothers’ Day
bulletin insert. For
only 50¢ per name,
you can honor your
mother on her
special day, May 10.
Envelopes will be in
the pew racks for
your convenience.
Proceeds will help
fund projects, such
as the Food Pantry,
the Samaritan Fund,
CARITAS, funeral
meals, and many
others.
"World Malaria Day is Saturday, April 25," Bishop Cho
said. "This day is used to bring awareness about the
preventable and treatable disease of malaria around the
world. The Virginia Conference is excited to announce
our plans for the day. We would like all of our churches
across the state to participate by hosting lemonade
stands in our communities. We want to connect our
neighbors with our churches and help save the lives of
thousands in Africa suffering from malaria. I imagine
more than a thousand lemonade stands all over the
conference."
Geranium Sale
The UMUMR Auxiliary is selling geraniums at
$4.50 each (4-1/2” pot). The geraniums will
come in red, salmon, coral, hot pink, and
white. Orders will be taken for specific
colors, but no guarantees can be made. Plant
pick-up will be on Friday, April 17 at 12:00
noon at the Bon Air United Methodist Church
parking lot. Or they will be picked up and
brought to Ramsey for you to pick up on
Saturday, April 18 or Sunday, April 19. Checks
can be made payable to UMUMR. Sign up on the
bulletin board or by calling Scotty Doyle at
804-744-3034. Deadline to order is Sunday,
April 12.
Graduates, Sunday, June 7 is
“Graduate Recognition Sunday”. A
breakfast for all graduates and their
families will be served at 9:30AM. We
need to know if you will be attending
and how many. All graduates will be
recognized at the 11:00AM worship
service with a projected slide in their
honor and a small gift from the
church. For the slide, we need three
pictures at different ages and stages
of life and information about the
school they are graduating from and
their next endeavor. We need this
information no later than May 24,
2015. The information can be
submitted to the office or to Sue
Newman.

BROTHERS UNITED IN CHRISTIAN SERVICE
(BUCS)
Hunting season is over and the BUCS are ready to get out of the
woods. We will meet next on Saturday, April 4, for breakfast and
devotional in the CLC. Afterwards we will work on trimming
shrubs and making the grounds look good for Easter.
On April 18, we will assist with setup and takedown of the stage,
tables, chairs and equipment needed for the Ramsey Spring
Festival. We will need a crew at 7AM for setup and again in early
afternoon for takedown. I will run the early crew but need a
coordinator for the takedown crew.
We will conduct our 5th annual Men’s Grill Night and Bible Study
starting on Monday, April 27 and continuing on May 4,11 and 18.
We fire the grill at 6PM each Monday. You need only bring your
grill item. Beverages, sides and desserts are provided. We eat at
6:30 while watching the DVD portion for about 15 to 20 minutes
and then have our study until about 7:30. See me to get your
study book by Andy Stanley DVD at a cost of $10 per man.
Our volunteer study leaders (who will also get the sides for their
assigned week) are:
April 27 –Dan Hallinan
May 4 – Jerry Cummings
May 11 – Dave Rives
May 18 – Rick Vance
We are looking forward to Russ Cottrell returning as our
Grillmaster.

out and help women and children worldwide to have hope for a brighter future.

¡Aleluya! ¡Él ha resucitado! ¡El Vive, El Vive, Hoy Vive El Salvador!
¡Paz a Vosotros!

The Staff Pastor Parish Relations Committee
announces a change in our Ramsey Staff Ministry Team.
Carla Maguina Gomez decided not to return from her maternity leave as
she gives her full attention to her family and the care of their son, Leo.
Carla was a committed, valued staff member at Ramsey for the past two
years. She assisted greatly with our Hispanic ministry and she will be
deeply missed. We wish her and her husband, Hector, and their beautiful
little boy all the best.
We welcome Paige Hannan as our new administrative assistant. Paige has
served us on a temporary basis since December. She has had experience in
office management, budgets and accounting, and personnel administration.
Her work positions have included efficient and effective support of pastors,
staff, and congregation. She has a Bachelor of Science degree from VCU.
Paige is “mom” to three children and currently attends Hope Church.
Various members of our Ramsey Congregation have discovered that she is
energetic, organized, motivated, intelligent, and enthusiastic. She has a
dedicated Christian faith and desire to serve. In her spare time, she enjoys
watching her kids’ various sports activities, running, and watching Rams
basketball. Welcome to Ramsey Memorial UMC, Paige!
