September 25 Marks the 9th Annual National Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims.
Here in Maine we feel that we live in a very safe place. But as safe as it usually seems, there are many
Maine families who have experienced the taking of a loved one’s life at the hands of another. Imagine the grief
and horror experienced by the many parents, siblings, relatives, and extended family members and friends,
coworkers and associates following the news of the murder of a loved one. Murder is really another dimension of
cruelty that forever changes the fabric of our communities. Each year, approximately 20-25 homicides take place
in Maine, and half of those murders are committed by a family member, someone who claimed to love them.
The Maine Chapter of the National Organization, Parents of Murdered Children (POMC) is a chapter of
the only national self-help organization designed solely to offer emotional support and information about
surviving the loss of a loved one, at the hands of another by homicide. We have already identified almost 600
names of Maine related murder victims whose lives were taken by the intentional acts of others. “When we
remember them, it means that a part of who they were, is a part of who we are now”:
