HOW TO SET UP A WORKS CITED PAGE
AND USE PARENTHETICAL
DOCUMENTATION
Using Microsoft Word
What is it?
●
A Works Cited page is a list of references that goes at
the end of a research paper. We will use the MLASeventh Edition format.
Parenthetical Documentation is when you place
references throughout the actual text that cites where the
information comes from.
- Minimally, these must go in after every direct quotation
that you write.
- For more advanced writers, they will go in anytime you
end a source and are getting ready to switch to a new one.
●
●
How do I do it? Using Microsoft Word, first
create your sources which will be used for your Works
Cited page and in text citations

Now it is time to type your paper and to include
in-text citations or parenthetical documentation
●
●
●
●
●
●
●
●
After every direct quote that you use in your paper, you
need to include a citation.
Type your quote, but DO NOT PUT A PERIOD AT THE
END OF THE SENTENCE- JUST END WITH THE
LAST QUOTATION MARK
Click on the References tab
Click on Insert Citations
You should see a list of the sources you’ve typed
Click on the correct source
Your citation will appear in parenthesis.
Type a period afterward and you are done.
Example
●
●
●
●
(Atsma).
(Lindermans).
(Skidmore, Aphrodite).
(Skidmore, Aphrodite).
However...
If your citation is a BOOK with page numbers, you
need to edit the citation
● click on the (Napoli) citation
● click the down arrow
● click Edit Citation
● Type in your page numbers in the appropriate box (see
your source notes for the numbers
● Click OK.
Example: (Napoli 90-93).
For more Advanced Writers:
You should include parenthetical documentation or in-text
citations even when you are writing in your own words
because you are still borrowing someone else’s facts and
research.
Any time you are switching from one source to another,
you need to end with a citation. Follow the same
directions as indicated on the previous slide.
This may mean your paper will require a lot of citations if
you switch from source to source a lot.
Remember:
●
●
●
Always place your punctuation after the citation.
If you list the name of the source in your text, like
According to Donna Jo Napoli, …. , you only need to
write in the page number. Ex. (90-93).
You must always put a citation directly after a quote!
Don’t forget to make a Works Cited page once
you finish the paper.
●
●
●
●
●
●
●
Once you have finished typing your paper, scroll down
to the next page that has no writing or typing on it.
Click on the References tab
Click the drop down arrow for Bibliography
Choose the second option, Works Cited
Select the words Works Cited and center the text
Select all the sources and click the Home tab
Double space (2.0) the entire Works Cited document
That’s it. You’ve created a Research paper with proper in
text citations and a Works Cited page.
