Books donated from VB families to add to the Bookmobile collection.
In February, the fourth and fifth grade ELL students at Van Buren Elementary, with
guidance from ELL teacher Patty Henrichs, entered the WITESOL Writing and Art
Contest, a contest for ELL students across all of Wisconsin. The students could make
artwork or write an essay about what makes the perfect school and the ideal learning
environment. At the end of April, winners were announced. We are proud to share that
fifth grader Danna Vasquez-Cabrera is the grand prize winner for art out of all entries
from kindergarten through 12th grade!
Danna's project was made of clay, Post-It notes, felt, watercolor paints, and markers. She
designed an outdoor learning environment with a little free library and a compliment
board where students can post compliments for their classmates. In her description of her
project, she wrote, "My vision of a perfect school would include these details. For
example kids would not fight and teachers would pay attention to what students are
doing. Also we should have a compliment board outside because that is where students
mostly are. I think we should have a free library."
Congratulations Danna!
Our Summer School, Van Buren Olympic Voyage is underway! We are kicking things
off with an Opening Ceremony on Friday, June 17 at 11:00a.m. Students will represent
several countries competing in the Summer Olympics in Rio; we will light the Olympic
