Energy Role Walk & Food Chain Construction The Energy Role Walk & Food Chain Construction activity, as described in the following document, will address the following objectives; Students will be able to identify and define the various energy roles Students will be able to categorize organisms based on their energy role Students will be able to identify sources of energy Students will be to identify local organisms Students will be able to identify and illustrate paths of energy within food chains and food webs. Energy Role Walk and Food Chain Construction Name Directions: Take a short walk somewhere outside. You can do this in your backyard, at a local park, or you can even have a family member drive you to a location of interest (such as a nearby stream or meadow). During your walk, look for producers, consumers, and decomposers. Use this worksheet to record what your find. On a separate sheet of paper, cardboard, poster, etc., construct a complete labeled food chain using organisms you recorded on this worksheet. Be sure to include one decomposer, one producer, and at least one consumer in your food chain. You should provide a visual representation of each organism: you can use drawings, magazine cut-outs, computer pictures, etc. You may need to conduct some research in order to determine accurate paths of energy flow (what eats what). The food chain created needs to depict something that can actually happen in real life. Remember, this will be included in your portfolio and therefore, needs to be able to fit in a pizza box.
