RESUMEN
Este trabajo es el primero, dentro de una corta serie, sobre la vida y aportación científica
de C. D. Michener, el apidólogo más sobresaliente del siglo XX a escala mundial. En esta
entrega se detallan sus datos biográficos y se aporta un listado de sus publicaciones.

Michener, the most outstanding melittologist of the 20th century. In this part some biographic

BIOGRAFÍA
Charles Duncan Michener nació en Pasadena, California, el 22 de septiembre de 1918. Su padre, Harold, era ingeniero eléctrico de profesión, pero
se interesaba por las aves, grupo del que era un gran entusiasta. También lo
era su madre, Josephine, que casi llegó a doctorarse en la Universidad de
California, especializándose en protozoos dinoflagelados marinos, pero tuvo
que abandonar la investigación al casarse, como era la norma en aquellos

tiempos. Fue ella la que inculcó al joven Charles el amor por la naturaleza
y el ansia por conocerla mejor. Parecía inevitable, por tanto, que también
empezaran gustándole las aves, tal como ocurrió. Sin embargo, cuando
contaba 9 años pasó a fijarse en las plantas con flor. Era tal su interés,
que con esa edad comenzó a hacer dibujos de plantas y lo siguió haciendo
hasta que ya no encontró especies de su entorno que no hubiera dibujado, lo
que ocurrió cuando tenía 12 años. Por otra parte, ya recolectaba y dibujaba
insectos con 10 años y continuó haciéndolo hasta los 15.
El primer grupo de insectos que le llamó la atención fueron los Ichneumonidae (Hymenoptera), debido al curioso comportamiento de ovoposición
de sus hembras. Poco después pasó a fijarse en otros himenópteros, los
Apoidea. Según él mismo confiesa, seguramente fue Perdita rhois Cockerell,
1901 (Andrenidae) la primera especie de abeja en la que se fijó. Por aquella
época conoció a Philip H. Timberlake, uno de los precursores del estudio de
los Apoidea en los Estados Unidos, con quien compartía salidas al campo.
Fue él quien le sugirió que entrara en contacto con Theodore D.A. Cockerell,
de la Universidad de Colorado, el más relevante especialista norteamericano
de la época en el grupo. Cockerell, que describió más especies de abejas
que cualquier otro autor, vivo o muerto, carecía de titulación universitaria, pero publicó, entre 1882 y 1949, 3.904 artículos sobre una temática
variada, incluyendo muchos sobre abejas, insectos en los que se concentró
a partir de 1895. Centró su actividad en la descripción de innumerables
especies, pero sus trabajos adolecían de precipitación y falta de claves de
identificación, dibujos y referencias bibliográficas. No creó escuela, sino
que tan sólo tuvo algunos colaboradores que, aunque aprendieron mucho de
él, como Michener, intentaron no seguir su ejemplo en cuanto a la manera
de difundir los resultados de sus investigaciones.
Cuando Michener conoció a Cockerell, tenía unos 14 años y le pidió
que lo ayudara a identificar una pequeña colección de abejas. A partir de
ese momento Cockerell lo apoyó en sus inicios, lo invitó a algunas de sus
campañas de colecta en los desiertos de Mojave y Colorado, entre otras, y
lo animó a empezar a publicar, lo que hizo en 1935, cuando tenía sólo 16
años. El año siguiente, Michener, en su último curso de educación secundaria,
se trasladó como estudiante preuniversitario a la Universidad de California
en Berkeley, donde existía el más importante departamento de Entomología
de la costa oeste, si bien no había ningún especialista en Apoidea. Siguió
publicando y, aunque sus primeros artículos (antes de graduarse en Berkeley) fueron muy similares a los de Cockerell, pronto pasó a incluir claves
e ilustraciones en la descripción de nuevas especies.
Michener realizó sus estudios de la Licenciatura en Ciencias en Berkeley, donde se convirtió en un morfólogo comparativo y sistemático de

abejas. Se licenció en 1939 y se doctoró en Ciencias (Entomología) en
1942, obteniendo ambos grados en la Universidad de California. Ya había
empezado la elaboración de su tesis durante sus estudios de licenciatura,
y la agilizó todo lo que pudo para que el desarrollo de la Segunda Guerra
Mundial no la interrumpiera. Su mentor principal en esa universidad fue
Edward Oliver Essig, especialista en áfidos y creador de una escuela de
entomólogos tan importante que, actualmente, la colección entomológica de
la Universidad de California en Berkeley lleva su nombre. Pero Essig, que
ni siquiera llegó a publicar un sólo artículo con Michener, no fue su mentor real, sino dos profesores jóvenes, aún sin plaza fija en la universidad,
Earle Gorton Linsley y, secundariamente, Robert Leslie Usinger, también
experto en Hemiptera. Linsley era especialista en coleópteros, pero se da
la paradoja de que se convirtió en un auténtico entusiasta de los Apoidea
gracias a la dirección de las actividades científicas de Michener, de manera que, centrándose sobre todo en algunos grupos parásitos, publicó un
gran número de trabajos, algunos en coautoría con él. La tesis doctoral de
Michener (The external morphology and the phylogeny of bees) fue ampliada y se publicó poco después de su doctorado (Michener, 1944; nº 44,
Apéndice 2) y vino a suplir la importante falta de claves de identificación
que existía en aquel momento. Además, fue el primer intento de elaborar
un estudio sistemático y filogenético de conjunto de todos los Apoidea y
en el que se proponía un sistema de clasificación de la superfamilia que
más tarde fue adoptando toda la comunidad científica especializada. Ese
voluminoso artículo, que podría presentarse como una obra de juventud
(Michener contaba sólo con 26 años), puede considerarse como un clásico
que permaneció vigente durante varias décadas.
Durante la preparación del doctorado, trabajó en la Universidad de California como auxiliar técnico hasta 1942 (ver el Apéndice 1 para una relación de los puestos ocupados durante su actividad profesional), impartiendo
cursos que organizaban Essig y Linsley. Fue durante esos cursos cuando
conoció a una estudiante, Mary Hastings, con la que se casó al cabo de un
semestre docente. Como es frecuente en el mundo de la Entomología, Mary
Hastings Michener ha sido, y es, su principal colaboradora, y con ella ha
compartido prácticamente todas sus expediciones científicas.
En 1942, tras publicar una serie de artículos sobre icneumónidos, grupo que le había seguido interesando pero en el que no veía futuro, aceptó
un puesto como Conservador Ayudante de Lepidoptera en el American
Museum of Natural History de Nueva York. Se dedicó entonces a la sistemática de distintos grupos de mariposas, tanto diurnas como nocturnas.
En aquel tiempo, el puesto de conservador de Hymenoptera estaba ocupado
por Herbert F. Schwarz, que trabajaba en Apoidea, por lo que Michener

tuvo que dedicarse al estudio de las abejas al margen de lo que eran sus
verdaderas obligaciones. Aprovechó su estancia en Nueva York, donde tuvo
como principales compañeros a Ernst Mayr (ornitólogo) y George Gaylord
Simpson (paleontólogo), para profundizar en la comprensión de problemas
evolutivos. En 1943, Michener se enroló como voluntario en el ejército,
donde sirvió hasta 1946 como teniente primero y capitán en los Cuerpos
de Sanidad. Lejos de suponerle una pérdida de tiempo, aprovechó su estancia en el ejército para investigar sobre enfermedades de transmisión
por artrópodos, primero mosquitos en Mississippi y después trombicúlidos
(Acari; concretamente las larvas hexápodas o “chiggers”) en Panamá. Su
estancia en ese país le sirvió como base para un importante artículo sobre
su apidofauna que publicaría años después (Michener, 1954; n.º 110). Tras
finalizar la guerra, Michener rechazó la oferta de proseguir como entomólogo médico, y se reincorporó al Museo de Nueva York, donde continuó
como lepidopterólogo y aprovechó para realizar una expedición científica
de tres meses de duración a Méjico.
Michener ingresó en la Universidad de Kansas en 1948 como Profesor Titular de Entomología tras el retiro de su predecesor, Herbert Barker
Hungerford, quien le había pedido
que lo hiciera y había propuesto
su contratación. Otra razón que le
impulsó a hacerlo fue la imposibilidad de dedicarse por completo a los
Apoidea en Nueva York, tal como
ya se ha dicho más arriba, por estar
ocupado el puesto de conservador
de la colección de Hymenoptera.

notablemente las campañas de captura para enriquecer la colección. Hungerford había dirigido el Museo desde 1924 hasta 1949 y fue, junto con
Francis Huntington Snow (que la creó y fue su conservador hasta 1901),
uno de los artífices de la constitución de la colección entomológica del
Museo de Historia Natural de la Universidad de Kansas, cuyo nombre es,
precisamente, “Snow Entomological Collections”. Pero Michener, con un
equipo incipiente de estudiantes, logró especializarse en la biología de los
Apoidea, debido a que en aquellos años estaban empezando las investigaciones sobre la aplicación de distintas especies en la polinización de cultivos.
De esta manera, empezó a dominar todos los aspectos relacionados con las
abejas (biología, ecología, comportamiento, organización social, sistemática)
y empezó a estudiar la morfología de las larvas como posible base para la
sistemática. En este sentido le fue muy útil la experiencia adquirida investigando la biología y organización social de las abejas durante sucesivas
estancias de un año en Brasil, Australia y varios países africanos. Una obra
capital, fruto de esas investigaciones, fue The social behaviour of the bees,
publicada en 1974. Un lustro después, en 1979, produjo otra de sus obras
esenciales, Biogeography of the bees, trabajo que el autor comienza, realista
y humildemente, afirmando “puede parecer prematuro el momento para
publicar un artículo sobre la historia de la distribución de las abejas...”.
Fue jefe del Departamento de Entomología desde 1949 hasta 1961 y,
más adelante, de 1972 a 1975. Recibió el galardón Watkins como Profesor
Distinguido de Entomología en 1958, y se convirtió en director del Snow
Entomogical Museum en 1974. Allí le llegó el retiro, en 1989, pero sigue
ligado a la institución como Profesor Emérito del ahora llamado Department
of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, y es también Conservador Emérito
de Entomología del Snow Entomological Museum.
En el momento de su retiro, Michener había publicado más de 360
artículos y libros. Igualmente, había descrito cientos de taxones, la gran
mayoría de abejas. Ese mismo año comenzó su actividad una fundación con
la University Endowment Association para la impartición de una serie de
conferencias especializadas denominadas “Michener Lectures”. Desde esa
fecha se han impartido más de 40, a razón de entre una y diez por año,
principalmente sobre Entomología, pero también sobre Fisiología, Etología,
etc., contando, entre los conferenciantes, expertos estadounidenses como
Frank D. Horowitz (Universidad de Kansas), Bernd Heinrich (Universidad de Vermont), y extranjeros como Philip E. Howse (Universidad de
Southampton, Reino Unido), Karl Eduard Linsenmair (Zoologisches Institut,
Wurzburg, Alemania), Hayo H. W. Velthuis (Universidad de Utrecht, Países
Bajos), William G. Eberhard (Universidad de Costa Rica), Laurent Keller
(Universidad de Lausana, Suiza), etc.

Michener ha compatibilizado sus actividades de investigación y docencia
con otras tareas. Destaca la formación de más de 80 estudiantes (incluyendo 42 de doctorado) que lo han ayudado de un modo evidente y esencial
en muchas fases de su vida profesional, en las facetas tanto investigadora
como docente, al colaborar en un gran número de las investigaciones que
dieron lugar a sus publicaciones, así como en distintos programas docentes
y tareas administrativas (en la Foto 2, Michener aparece rodeado de algunos
de ellos). El valor que Michener ha dado siempre a los estudiantes, especialmente los de postgrado, incluso tras el retiro, ha sido muy alto; incluso
ha publicado artículos sobre temas pedagógicos para estudiantes graduados.
Merece la pena mencionar que, tras la muerte de George C. Eickwort, tutor
de Michael S. Engel, Michener se concentró en dirigir las labores de for-

mación e investigación de éste, para lo que obtuvo un permiso oficial de
la Cornell University hasta que Engel defendió su tesis doctoral.
Otra de sus actividades más relevantes ha sido la de editor de revistas
científicas. Quizá lo más trascendental en este sentido fue su aportación a
la primera reunión del comité editorial de Annual Review of Entomology,
que tuvo lugar en la Natural History Survey y la Universidad de Illinois en
1956; allí se preparó la edición (discusión y selección de autores y temas
de publicación) del primer volumen de la revista. Fue, asimismo, editor de
Evolution, entre 1962 y 1964, editor asociado de Annual Review of Ecology
and Systematics entre 1970 y 1985, y editor americano de Insectes Sociaux
en 1954 y 1955 y, después, de 1970 a 1985. Igualmente, participó en la
edición de varias publicaciones del estado de Kansas; si bien fue editor del
University of Kansas Science Bulletin, es anecdótico que nunca lo fue del
Journal of the Kansas Entomological Society, pero sí su esposa, y durante
varios años (ver Apéndice 1).
Michener ha sido socio numerario, honorario o miembro de la directiva
de numerosas sociedades científicas, tanto biológicas en sentido amplio
como entomológicas (ver Apéndice 1). En 1965 fue elegido miembro de
la sociedad más prestigiosa y exclusiva de Estados Unidos, la National
Academy of Sciences. Fue vicepresidente de la sección americana de la
Unión Internacional para el Estudio de los Insectos Sociales (IUSSI) de
1979 a 1980, presidente de la Kansas Entomological Society en 1950,
presidente de la Society for the Study of Evolution en 1967, presidente
de la Society of Systematic Zoology en 1968 y presidente de la American Society of Naturalists en 1978. En 1977 empezó su mandato como
presidente de la IUSSI y organizó el 9º Congreso Internacional de esa
sociedad, celebrado en 1982 en Boulder (Colorado). Entre los galardones
que ha recibido de distintas sociedades científicas hay que mencionar que
fue el primero en ser nombrado Miembro Honorario de la IUSSI y destaca la posesión de la “Distinguished Research Medal”, concedida por la
International Society of Hymenopterists en el año 2002, reconocimiento
que, hasta la fecha, sólo han recibido Zdenek Boucek del Natural History
Museum de Londres en 2004 y, en 2006, Richard Bohart, de la Universidad de California, Davis.
El año pasado se le dedicó el que quizás sea, por el momento, el último
homenaje que ha recibido. Durante la celebración del Congreso de la IUSSI
en Washington (del 30 de julio al 4 de agosto), el Simposio 4 fue titulado
“Filogenia y evolución de las abejas, un tributo a Charles Michener”. Organizado por uno de sus discípulos, Bryan N. Danforth, según el programa,
“honró las contribuciones del Dr. Charles Michener a los estudios sobre
la filogenia de las abejas y la evolución social”.

PUBLICACIONES
Hasta la fecha, la lista de publicaciones de Michener asciende a un
total de 440, y comprende 8 libros, 43 capítulos de libros, 357 artículos en
revistas científicas, 5 en actas de congresos, y recensión de 27 libros (ver
Apéndice 2). Además, a la fecha de conclusión de este artículo, Michener
tiene otros cinco artículos en distintas fases de publicación (Michener, com.
pers.). En cuanto a la recensión de libros, destacan obras clásicas de autores
como Owain W. Richards, Ernst Mayr, Edward O. Wilson, Friedrich Ruttner,
el Traité de Zoologie de Pierre Grassé, o el mismo Imms’ General Textbook
of Entomology. Merece destacarse, asimismo, el obituario que escribió de
su maestro, Cockerell (Michener, 1948; n.º 72).
Ha publicado con innumerables colaboradores, empezando por su
propio mentor, Linsley (tanto sobre Apoidea como sobre Coleoptera Cerambycidae, especialidad de Linsley junto con las abejas cleptoparásitas),
pasando por su propia esposa, Mary Hastings Michener, una nuera, Gail R.
Michener (profesora de la Universidad de Lethbridge en Alberta, Canadá,
especialista en ardillas terrestres), colegas extranjeros (sobresalen el padre
Jesús S. Moure y Rudolf B. Lange de Brasil, Yasuo Maeta y Shoichi F.
Sakagami de Japón, Álvaro Wille de Costa Rica, ...) y, por supuesto, sus
discípulos (de una larga lista, destacan Denis J. Brothers y Connal Eardley
de Suráfrica, Mark L. Winston de Canadá, David W. Roubik de Panamá,
Bryan N. Danforth de Nueva York, Robert W. Brooks y Michael S. Engel
de Kansas,...) y colegas estadounidenses (Wallace E. Laberge y Ronald
McGinley de la Illinois Natural History Survey, Howell V. Daly de la Universidad de California en Berkeley, Paul D. Hurd del National Museum of
Natural History [ya fallecido], Jerome G. Rozen y David A. Grimaldi del
American Museum of Natural History, Terry L. Griswold de Utah, Byron
A. Alexander de Kansas [fallecido], ...). Como nota anecdótica, merece la
pena reseñar que Michener, en 1947, durante su estancia en el American
Museum of Natural History de Nueva York, conoció a Paul R. Ehrlich,
un quinceañero que estaba interesado en el estudio de los Lepidoptera.
Como Cockerell hiciera con él mismo, lo apoyó y lo animó a ingresar en
la Lepidopterists’ Society. Sólo en 2004 ambos entomológos publicaron un
artículo en coautoría (n.º 431).
Michener publicó, desde el principio, en las más notables revistas del
continente americano (The Pan-Pacific Entomologist, Canadian Entomologist,
American Museum Novitates, Entomological News, American Midland Naturalist, Journal of the Kansas Entomological Society, University of Kansas
Science Bulletin,...) y fueron muy escasas sus incursiones en publicaciones
editadas en Europa (Insectes Sociaux, Bee World,...).

Si bien empezó publicando sobre Apoidea, grupo que ha sido su pasión,
Michener estudió en sus primeros años de investigación otros grupos de
himenópteros (Ichneumonidae principalmente y alguna colaboración sobre
Formicidae o Sphecidae). También publicó sobre otros órdenes de insectos,
como los coleópteros, debido a su relación con Linsley, los lepidópteros
(Nymphalidae, Libytheidae, Lycaenidae, Saturnidae, etc.), fruto de su labor como conservador de Lepidoptera en el American Museum of Natural
History de Nueva York, áfidos (por la relación de éstos con los formícidos), y dípteros (Culicidae) e incluso arácnidos, como los ácaros (Acari:
Trombiculidae e Ixodidae), consecuencia de su paso por el ejército, donde
desempeñó tareas en los Cuerpos de Sanidad. Fue desde mediados de la
década de los 50 cuando Michener, definitivamente, se dedicó en exclusividad a los Apoidea y otros insectos sociales.
Hay que indicar que, en lo concerniente a los distintos grupos de Apoidea, sus publicaciones no sólo abarcan aspectos taxonómicos, revisiones
regionales, biología y ecología, origen y fósiles, sino también problemas
nomenclaturales. De esta última materia dan fe sus aportaciones publicadas
en el Bulletin of Zoological Nomenclature, pero también a lo largo de su
dilatada lista de artículos en otras revistas; incluso, según dice él, “jugué
con la forma de mejorar nuestro sistema de nomenclatura”, proponiendo
un sistema uninomial de nomenclatura para aumentar la estabilidad de los
nombres (ver Michener, 1964; n.º 195).
En lo referente a aportaciones más generales y de más amplia aplicación, aportó sus ideas sobre las categorías superiores en la clasificación en
1958 (ver nº 144) y hay que destacar que colaboró, junto con Robert R.
Sokal, en el desarrollo de clasificaciones basadas en caracteres cuantitativos
fenéticos (como oposición a las más convencionales, basadas grandemente
en la intuición), clasificación conocida como taxonomía numérica (ver Michener & Sokal, 1957 y otros; nos 141, 148, 207, 220). El último trabajo
publicado por el momento (Michener, 2007; n.º 440) hace un resumen de
sus intereses profesionales, y supone una reflexión casi filosófica de lo
que ha sido su larga carrera investigadora (la Foto 3 muestra a Michener
en la actualidad).
Según las propias palabras de Michener, el interés principal que lo ha
movido durante toda su vida investigadora es la elaboración de un estudio
sistemático general de los Apoidea a escala mundial. Para ello, ya cerca
de su “jubilación”, comenzó a seleccionar grupos y estructuras anatómicas
que lo ayudaran al estudio de las relaciones entre los géneros y familias de
toda la superfamilia (glosa, coxa de las patas intermedias,...), así como la
biología intranido (arquitectura, morfología de inmaduros, parasitismo,...),
incluso el difícil estudio de los escasos restos fósiles. Un par de trabajos

generales, sobre las relaciones filogenéticas tanto de las abejas de “lengua
larga” (Roig-Alsina & Michener, 1993; n.º 387) como de las de “lengua
corta” (Alexander & Michener, 1995; n.º 399) son de especial relevancia
aquí.
Entre la ingente obra científica de Michener, que se relaciona a continuación, destaca su obra cumbre, fruto de su larga vida de investigación
y que obtuvo el importante galardón editorial “Association of American
Publishers R.R. Hawkins Award” en 2000. Se trata de The Bees of the
World, publicado en 2000, y actualmente en revisión por parte de su autor.

Con más de 900 páginas, se trata del primer y único tratado exhaustivo
de todos los grupos de abejas del mundo; incluye datos de más de 16.000
especies que, pertenecientes a 1.200 géneros y subgéneros, según el propio
Michener serían seguramente más si se aplicaran técnicas moleculares, así
como estudios morfológicos más concienzudos. A lo largo de unas primeras
secciones introductorias, Michener examina la evolución de las abejas a
partir de un grupo de avispas esfécidas, las relaciones filogenéticas de las
familias de abejas entre sí, la evolución de las abejas en relación con las
plantas superiores, el comportamiento nidificador de las abejas, tanto solitarias como sociales, y la morfología de los estadios inmaduros. Basándose
en tales consideraciones, así como en el registro fósil conocido, Michener
especula sobre los atributos de la que él denomina “protoabeja”, que sería
el ancestro común de todas las abejas. También repasa la biología del grupo
y nos recuerda la necesidad de intensificar la investigación, no sólo sobre
sistemática, sino también sobre la historia natural, incluyendo su importante papel como polinizadores tanto de las plantas cultivadas como de la
vegetación silvestre. Pero la parte principal del texto la compone un tratado
sin precedentes sobre la sistemática de los Apoidea, con claves (muchas de
ámbito regional) para la identificación hasta el nivel de subgénero. Para
cada taxón de rango genérico o subgenérico se aportan algunos datos sobre
su ciclo de vida, se da su distribución geográfica, el número de especies,
así como información de interés sobre la biología, tando floral como de
anidamiento. El libro está ricamente ilustrado con 48 fotos en color y más
de 500 dibujos y fotografías en blanco y negro que representan la morfología, el comportamiento y la ecología de todos los grupos. Pero ni el mismo
Michener da por cerrada esta importante obra porque, según sus propias
palabras al autor del presente artículo, “muchas de sus partes están basadas
en revisiones de nivel genérico y otros estudios comparativos escritos hace
mucho tiempo y fue, sin embargo una de mis principales ocupaciones entre
1989 y 1999 que ahora mismo estoy revisando...”.
En resumen, y en palabras de Jerome G. Rozen, conservador de Invertebrados en el American Museum of Natural History, Nueva York, “The
Bees of the World es una obra clásica. Escrito por la reconocida autoridad
mundial en abejas, permite al lector identificar las abejas y entender su
clasificación y filogenia. La fuerza de Michener es su maestría mundial de
la sistemática de las abejas, y este libro será, sin duda, la “biblia” que
usarán tanto los especialistas como los estudiantes de todo el mundo.”
La dedicatoria que Michener hace en el libro refleja, en pocas palabras,
la humildad de este talento: “A mis muchos estudiantes, hoy desperdigados
por todo el mundo, de quienes he aprendido mucho, y a mi familia, que
tolera con amor una obsesión por las abejas.”
