28 November 2014
Dear Parents
Today in Assembly we launched the 99 club. This is a brand new school initiative and has been
developed to help raise standards in Numeracy by encouraging pupils to improve their mental
maths and therefore increase the speed and confidence they tackle mental maths problems in
Numeracy sessions, across the curriculum and in day to day life. By the end of Year 4 the
expectation of the government is that children will know all their times tables.
All pupils have one opportunity per week to complete the next level. This is done at the same
time across the whole school (Tuesday 8.55 am). All pupils are encouraged to have a go each
week. As a reward for getting all questions right, children will earn badges for every club which
have been designed by the children (and are very cool) which they can wear, put on school bags
etc.. For the 11club to 99 club children have a total time of 10 minutes unaided to complete the
questions. Children work through each level in order as highlighted below.
11 club – addition to 10, 22 club – addition to 20, 33 club – 2 x 10 x ,44 club – 2x, 5x, 10x,
55 club - 2x, 5x, 10x, 3x, 4x,66 club - 2x, 5x, 10x, 3x, 4x, 6x,77 club - 2x, 5x, 10x, 3x, 4x, 6x,
7x, 88 club - 2x, 5x, 10x, 3x, 4x, 6x, 7x, 8x, 99 club - 2x, 5x, 10x, 3x, 4x, 6x, 7x, 8x, 9x,
Bronze – up to 12 x and ÷ (4 minutes), Silver - up to 12 x and ÷ (3 ½ minutes),Gold - up to 12 x, ÷ ,
√ (3 minutes),Platinum – all 4 operations (2 ½minutes),Dizzy Star – level 5 questions-level 6
questions (2 ½ minutes).
Children will continue to learn times tables of the week in class and will practice and rehearse
but the aim of the 99 club is for the children to then take it upon themselves to go on to learn
their next times tables. By the end of Year 6, we aim to have as many people as possible on
dizzy Stars.
99 club is not designed for Foundation Stage, however, if teachers feel children are ready for it
then they will be given the opportunity from January.
Pupils are able to practise at home using practise sheets available on the website under 99 club.
The order of the questions changes so it is not possible for children to simply learn the answers
in a particular order.
We are really excited about this, as are the children, so good luck.
Have a lovely weekend
Mr. Gould
Message from the Bowling Club
-On Monday 1st December until Wednesday 3rd
December the bowling club will be taking delivery of the timber frame for the new building. This
will involve a crane in the pathway into the recreation ground. The pathway will be closed
between 7.00am and 8.30am. The crane will be de-rigged until 9.30am to allow for school
children and parents to use the pathway to the school. The pathway will then be closed from
9.30am until 3pm, when the crane will be de-rigged until 4pm, then the pathway will be closed
again until dark. Therefore this should not affect any parent or pupil, walking through the
recreation ground for normal school hours. We thank you again for your cooperation in building
this new community facility. NB If you have children at Stepping Stones please speak to Sandra
about the arrangements for lunchtimes.
Choir
– Congratulations to the School choir and Miss. Dyer for the most amazing
concert last night. You were all wonderful!
Nativity Tickets – From Monday, we will release the remaining tickets for the Nativity plays for
Foundation and KS 1. Therefore, if you would like more than two tickets please see Mrs.
Hodgson, from Monday, in the school office.
Ebola – A massive thank you for all your donations to Sierra Leone. There was a lovely piece in
the West Briton this week which I hope you managed to see.
Weather
– as the weather is seemingly very damp at the moment, please can children
bring in a coat every day. Also, I am very happy for them to bring in a set of wellies or
waterproof shoes to keep at school, as we want to get them outside as much as possible even if
it is raining.
Missing – adidas football boots, brand new, size 1 ½ or 2. Black & white stripes & orange lining,
moulded sole with rubber studs. Please return to Caitlin, in Class 5, if found.
