The special town meeting on the purchase of the “Kennett
Property” was held on Tuesday night. One hundred forty-nine
residents came to hear the pros and cons of the purchase. Harry
Richardson once again presented his power point presentation and
it was followed by questions from the audience. (If you want to see
the meeting in its entirety, you can catch it on Valley Vision in the
next few days.) There were obviously people who were very much
for the purchase and those who were against the purchase. By 9 pm
the question was called and the actual voting took place. To
purchase the land, it needed a two third’s majority to pass. The
count was 83 yes and 66 no and therefore the vote to purchase
failed.
There was no selectmen’s meeting on Wednesday as it was the fifth
Wednesday of the month. Meetings resume on January 7th.
Sandy Stowell told me at the meeting that her son Michael who is
spending the holiday week in Ohio with family managed to take
down two deer in one day of hunting. She also learned that her
daughter, Lisa, will be re-deployed to Iraq this time in September.
Lots of visiting took place this Christmas holiday. Benadine Dubois
spent December 20th in St. Johnsbury with all her children,
grandchildren and a great-granddaughter. She also visited her
sister, Joan Parrish, in Lyndonville, Vt. Bob and Carol Munroe
were in Massachusetts for the holiday visiting with their son, Jeff
and his wife Michelle. While in Massachusetts they also saw Rick
and Pauline Munroe as well as other friends in the area. Nancy and
Roger Holmes braved the ice storm to celebrate Christmas in
Massachusetts with Nancy’s family. Debbie Hill and Bob Loring
spent Christmas Day with the Leavitts on Bald Hill. They had lived
on Bald Hill in the past. Lucille Leavitt and her sons, Jerry and Jim
came to spend time with Arthur and Mary Leavitt. Melissa,
Lucille’s granddaughter, from Manchester came up to spend some
time as well.
There’s a new restaurant in town, well not actually in Albany, but
near enough. Sharon’s Seafood and More has opened on the
Kancamagus and is serving from 11 am to 8 pm Wednesday
through Sunday. Though a small place, it is cozy and comfortable
and Sharon and Casey are friendly and welcoming. Though there’s
mostly fish on the menu, there are also burgers and sandwiches and
a children’s menu. Sharon moved her business to New Hampshire
from Fryeburg because among other things it is closer to home. She
lives on Bald Hill Road and Casey lives just down the street from the
restaurant. Mary and Arthur are part of a group of nine that get
together at “Sharon’s” each Friday and report the food is good and
worth a try. Though it appears the parking is limited, they have use
of the lot behind the restaurant so long as the machine shop is closed
(evenings and weekends). There is also a snowmobile trail to the
restaurant.
The New England Ski Museum located in Franconia Notch has
opened a satellite exhibit in North Conway at the Norcross Place in
the old Carroll Reed Ski Shop building on Main Street. It’s on the
lower level. Drop by and learn about the history of skiing from the
1930s to the 1980s. They’re open from 10 am to 5 pm daily.
From Mary and me: Here’s hoping that your New Year’s Eve was
enjoyable and the New Year brings you and yours good health and
good prospects for 2009. Have a great week!
