Students need to be careful readers of the words on the page , while also thinking about and understanding what they have read. During reading we discuss questions that help readers make connections, infer character feelings, think about why the author wrote the story, discuss characteristics of different genres, share opinions about the story, and much more! This month we also are reading memoirs. We are taking time to explore and determine the characteristics of a memoir. In this unit students will use prior knowledge to make predictions and explore the author’s use of words by identifying words that show feeling or appeal to the senses. Writing This month we are beginning our realistic fiction unit, which ties in with our reading as well! In this unit students get to create and name a main character for their story. They also will make a problem for their character and then a solution to get their character out of trouble. We will also be writing realistic fiction series where the main character of the story will be the same, but have new and different adventures in each book they write. Math In math are wrapping up adding ten to a 2-digit number and finding ten more or ten less than a 2-digit number. We will then begin a new unit focused on representing and comparing data. Students will explore collecting data and different ways to organize and represent data. We will also learn how to solve comparing story problems by using a comparison bar representation. This representation helps students compare two amounts and find the unknown quantity. Social Studies In March we will be learning about a air, how it can be useful and possibly harmful. We will also begin a study of nonliving and living things focusing on plants and animals. Students will learn about different species of animals, animal habitats, diets, and life cycles.
