captivating Alcatraz Cellhouse Audio Tour brings history
alive through the actual voices of the correctional officers
and inmates who lived on the island during the infamous
Federal Penitentiary era. Hear both sides of life in the
island prison including such famous events as escape
attempts, "The Battle of '46", food riots, and surviving

the famous “PACIFICA’S McCLOSKEY CASTLE or now
being called SAM’S CASTLE”. In the historic Sharp Park
District, a hillside castle overlooks the Pacific Ocean that is
an enigma for many! The legendary castle was built in
1903 as an earthquake-proof home for the family of Henry
McCloskey, a lawyer for the Ocean Shore Railroad and
grandfather to former congressman Peter McCloskey. The
castle’s last owner (and namesake) Sam Mazza, a
successful painting contractor with an artistic eye and a
fun- loving personality, refurbished the castle in an opulent,
whimsical style, filling many of the rooms with eyecatching antiques and collectibles. The visit to the castle
includes the chance to tour at your own pace (canes OK,
but walkers & wheelchairs are not recommended) and to
meet several resident “GHOSTS” costumed members of
our society who are eager to share the castle’s history.
There are 2 floors with railings. Upon arrival, the bus will
drop us off at the bottom of the hill and vans will take us
up the hill to the castle. After our tour, we will venture to
ROCK N ROB’S RESTAURANT for a hosted lunch
(1:30PM). MENU SELECTION: 1) Veggie Garden

been restored- PACIFICA’S COASTSIDE MUSEUM (33:30/3:45PM). The new museum was originally
constructed 1903-served as a church and then a police
station. It was abandoned for many years, but taken over
the Sam Mazza Foundation that also manages the Castle.
Currently on exhibition are displays featuring Surfing, the
Tunnel, The Ocean Shore Railroad, The Portola Exhibition,
Jack London and 30 years of Fog Fest posters and
memorabilia. Home by approx. 5:30/6:00PM. Driver’s

SPECIAL NOTICE – Marin IJ
April 26, 2016
Call from credit card “fraud unit” may
be a scam. You receive a phone call
from the “VISA security & fraud
unit”. The caller gives you a badge
number and says that there has been unusual spending
activity on your account. The caller gives you a
merchant’s name, a date and transaction amount and asks
you to verify the purchase. You are also given a control
number and an 800 number to call if you have any
questions. The caller then asks you for the three numbers
that appear on the back of your credit card to insure that
you have possession of it. You comply thinking that the
caller must be telling the truth since they know your name,
address, bank’s name & credit card number. Right?
WRONG! This is the scam to steal your identity and run
up charges on your credit card. NEVER give the code on
the back of your credit card to anyone unless you initiated
the call and it’s to a reputable merchant. Report all
suspicious calls to VISA or MasterCard fraud units.

CLASSES HELD AT THE SAN
RAFAEL COMMUNITY CENTER
To register call: 415-485-3348
“Yes,
you can! Learn technology basics! Beginner & Intermediate classes are
specifically for people with limited tech experience. Patient & kind instructor will
teach you the ins and outs of technology!
NEW****Organize your digital photos basics (MUST HAVE COMPLETED
AT LEAST ONE (1) SESSION OF EITHER THE BEGINNER COMPUTER
BASICS OR INTERMEDIATE COMPUTER BASICS CLASS TO ATTEND)”
As a result of working with me, my students become the drivers of their own tech experience with ease and grace.
Students learn how to use their tech environments much like a student driver learns how to use a car – what to do and when to
do it. My students learn the difference between user error and “this machine is out to get me.” With the veil of fear drawn back
from the modern technology experience, my students are able to consistently correct and continue along their journeys. As a
result of working with me, my clients feel more confident, secure, and successful within 3 months of weekly tech lessons.
WE BEGAN THESE COMPUTER CLASSES IN APRIL & THEY HAVE BEEN A HUGE SUCCESS!

Intermediate Class – 4 week course)
Instructor: Erica Kaplan, MS: After taking two separate businesses from paper to online early in her career, Erica went to
Dominican University in 2002 & earned a master’s degree in Education. As technology was always Erica’s passion, she used
it often in her teaching. In 2014, Erica took a Computer Science 101 course through Stanford University’s online program.
She was hooked. Since then she has worked with private clients and as a technology support specialist for Houghton Mifflin
Harcourt.
Testimonial: “I was having trouble syncing my iPhone with my computer and Erica Kaplan’s assistance was
invaluable. She patiently listened while I vented my frustrations and walked me through the steps to get my two devices to
sync. She also helped me personalize my computer. It is now so much easier to use. Thank you, Erica.” -Vanitha Sampath,
PhD, Content Development Manager, Sean N. Parker Center for Allergy& Asthma Research at Stanford University.
Current testimonials from 2 Goldenaires in the current session
Elena came in with an old PC laptop to the beginner’s class. At the first session she thought her situation was
hopeless. After four classes, she came with her smartphone and left today being able to send a text to her daughter!
“thank goodness! It’s such a new day for me. I feel like I’m part to the tech world now, at least a portion of the tech world. I
have gone beyond the initial introduction. There is a difference between introduction and actually understanding it and doing
it. I can definitely text. It’s working. This is a great day for me, I have to say. I’ll be back.”
Bette came into the intermediate class with computer background specific to her industry and a smartphone. Her
computer had recently been hacked for the first time ever. She was afraid of this happening again. After four weeks of classes
(one time per week), she shared with me the following. “I’m not as afraid to try things. I don’t feel like I’m going to totally
screw it up. I got my phone when my husband passed away. I was taking classes at night and wanted it for emergencies. As it
turned out, the places that I go don’t have very many bars so I didn’t use it as a phone as much as I thought I would. So I
learned to play games and take notes on it. Now, that I have you to be my little help desk, I’m not afraid to learn new things. I
have the larger smartphone and have had it for three years. Now, it seems like a normal phone size to me.”

"The best protection against memory loss is to exercise the brain’s memory mechanisms."
-- Richard Restak, MD
Brain Fitness Workshop-no charge
August 11th (Thursday) 10:30-11:30AM
San Rafael Community Center (Goldenaries)
Concept Statement:
As we age, we start relying more and more on the routines of life. We brush our teeth, we write our name or
we drive the same direction to the store. The challenge with routines? They don't require you to think about the
activity.
There are many ways to exercise your brain:
 Use your non-dominate hand to do a task
 Drive a different way to go shopping
 Learn something new
 Play a Game
The Alzheimer's Foundation of American suggests the following five things to promote a healthy brain lifestyle:
Physical Activity -- walk, dance, garden
Nutrition -- eat lean protein, fruits, vegetables, foods high in omega 3 fatty acids and antioxidants
Socialization -- call a family member, visit a friend, join an organization, volunteer
Mental Stimulation -- read out loud, problem solve, play a game
Spirituality -- pray, meditate, go to a place of worship
Workshop:
San Rafael Goldenaires & Senior Access will be offering a new way to accomplish these activities.
Join us for 1 hour of FUN activities. Our activity leader will lead you through a series of brain fitness
exercises. The event will provide you an opportunity to achieve:
 Physical Activity (you have to get to the event);
 Socialization
(you will be surround by a group of other people); and

Mental Stimulation
(you play games together).
CALL 485-3348 to reserve a space in this fun workshop! Limited to only 20 participants!
