WELCOME
www.heritagecity.org/dragonfestival
We’re thrilled to bring back the Norwich
Dragon Festival for 2014, due to popular
demand. This year, dragon-seekers of all
ages can enjoy hands-on arts and craft
activities, quests and tours, storytelling,
dragon performances, dragon trails, talks,
exhibitions, artwork and displays. You’ll meet
fire-breathing dragons in the city, see the city’s
dragon Snap out and about with the Whifflers,
discover the hidden Dragon’s Spell and hear
tales of dragons, beasts and knights from
times of old.
Brought to you by Norwich’s Heritage
Economic and Regeneration Trust (HEART),
the Norwich Dragon Festival is a celebration
of dragons and their importance in Norwich’s
culture and history, and a great way for people
to learn more about the city’s heritage and
myths and legends through fun activities.
Norwich has been referred to as the most
complete medieval city in England and HEART
initiatives like the Dragon Festival help to
create much greater awareness of the city’s
world-class heritage.
HEART is delighted to deliver the 3rd Norwich
Dragon Festival, and are grateful for financial
support from Norwich Business Improvement
District (BID) and Norwich Town Close Estate
Charity, and additional programming support
from The Forum.
The festival was a huge success in 2009 and
2011. Last time, it was enjoyed by 75,000
people and generated an economic impact of
over £400,000 for the city in just two weeks.
For 2014, there’s nearly 70 great events to
enjoy, held at over 25 venues and locations,
organised by over 30 organisations. HEART is
the strategic lead, providing funding, backoffice support, co-ordination and marketing,
but the whole festival is only possible thanks
to the creativity, passion and hard work of
staff and volunteers across the city, who
have come together to bring an exciting
programme of events for your enjoyment.
If you like the Norwich Dragon Festival,
then watch out for other HEART initiatives
throughout the year including a massive
Heritage Open Days event in September,
HEART’s 10th anniversary and events
celebrating Colman’s 200th anniversary with
our Colman’s Mustard Shop & Museum.
And if Dragons has whetted your appetite
for heritage, why not get more involved –
becoming a HEART Supporter gives you
early alerts of HEART activities and events,
a Supporter pack with heritage gifts, and
exclusive lectures and tours of sites normally
closed to the public. Find out more at
www.heritagecity.org/supporters. You can
also volunteer with HEART, or become a
Norwich Ambassador and be a champion
of the city’s heritage and culture (to find out
more, contact [email protected]).
We hope you enjoy Norwich Dragon Festival
2014 – there’s something for everyone in
the programme, with many free and drop-in
events around the city, and all sure to warm
up the post-Christmas depths of winter!
Events in the brochure are correct at the
time of going to press, but may change.

WHY DRAGONS?
Why dragons,
and why in Norwich?
The mythical symbol of the dragon has
captured imaginations around the world for
centuries, but this fantastical beast’s origin
is unknown. Perhaps dragons were borne
out of storytellers’ embellishments of giant
lizards and sea serpents, or possibly to
explain the discovery of gigantic dinosaur
bones. What is certain, is that dragons are
cemented as a part of our history, inciting
awe, admiration, worship and fear. In East
Asia, the symbol of the dragon is widely
revered, representing ideas of power,
strength and majesty; meanwhile in Europe
the dragon has often been presented as a
fiery, fearsome foe!
The legend of Saint George, dragon slayer,
really fuelled our country’s fascination
with dragons. English interest
in the terrific tale was stirred
during the Crusades in the
Late Middle Ages, and
Crusaders, inspired by St
George’s spirit, adopted
his symbol of a red cross
on a white background. St
George’s ties with England
were strengthened during
the reign of Henry III,
when he was declared
the patron saint of
England. Norwich has
4
WHY DRAGONS?
www.heritagecity.org/dragonfestival
two churches dedicated in his name –
St George, Tombland and St George,
Colegate – both housing many dragon
symbols in his honour. This famous dragon
slayer can be seen elsewhere in the city too:
captured in a fantastic 15th-century mural
of international importance in St Gregory’s
Church, and on a beautiful stained glass
window in Norwich Cathedral depicting the
saint and his defeated foe.
The Guild of St George, a religious
organisation, was founded in the 14th
century to organise festivities for St George’s
Day in Norwich. The Guild was one of
the most powerful and wealthy groups in
the city, with close ties to the city
government, and their influence
and prominence has resulted in
a big role for dragons in the city.
They introduced their own annual
procession – Guild Day – on
23 April, the date of the
saint’s martyrdom.
The procession included
St George and Margaret,
the maiden he rescued,
and to bring the legend
to life, ‘Snap’ the dragon
was introduced – rushing
around, taunting the
crowds with wings

flapping and smoke shooting from its
mouth. Snap soon became one of the
most popular elements of the procession.
In the late 16th century, Guild Day was
combined with the swearing-in of the
city’s new mayor. Although St George and
Margaret no longer made an appearance
at the procession, Snap remained and
the procession evolved into a grand civic
occasion. However, in 1835 when the
Municipal Corporation Act was put in
place, the civic purse strings were pulled
tight and much of the grand nature of civic
processions disappeared. Snap refused
to go quietly though, and continued to
appear occasionally until 1850. Nearly 150
years later, the Norwich Whifflers revived
Snap, whose traditional design is based on
an original version of Snap held in Norwich
Castle Museum, and so, in 1997 after a
lengthy period of absence, Snap is once
more part of the Lord Mayors’ celebration.
Today, most people have heard of dragons
of legend, but few know of the mythical
creature’s deep roots in the history of the
city. The powerful and fascinating symbol
of the dragon is an ideal way to explore and
promote Norwich’s rich cultural heritage,
which is why the Norwich Dragon Festival
was launched.

The Bad, the Wise, and

of Dragons in Old Norse
Literature by David Baker
DROP-IN FREE
DROP-IN FREE
Dr Alban will discuss the dragon in Great
Britain and Europe, from Roman times,
through the Middle Ages and into the
modern period. Taking as his starting point
the impact of the dragon in Welsh culture
and its significance to the Tudors, he will
touch upon its appearance in the legends of
King Arthur and St George and, in respect of
the latter, will also consider the significance
of the dragon to Norwich and Norfolk.
The stories and poetry of the medieval North
present an imaginative landscape crawling
with enormous, scaly, reptilian beasts of
various kinds. This talk will seek to explore
a little further the hoard of dragons that
appear in the Old Norse eddas and sagas,
many of which have had a long-lasting
influence on our own modern conceptions
(via the writings of Tolkien, Lewis, and
others) of exactly what it means to be a
dragon. Limited places available – first come
first served.
