Inspired by the structural configuration of molecular
compound models, this multi-functional space stimulates the
senses and creates a dynamic gathering place. Asymmetrical
synergy is exhibited through the geometrical structures that
frame the bar and seating areas, which reflect the makeup of
molecular models and the linking of atoms and bonds. The
elongated bar pulls inspiration from the fractal elements of
gemstones and offers visitors a place to refresh and recharge.
Distinct elements throught harmonize in an environment that
evokes intrigue and exploration.

INTERVIEW
Monday, November 9, 3:30 PM-4:00 PM
THE DESIGN FIRM: Puccini Group, San Francisco
THE MINDS BEHIND THE DESIGN: Amy Jakubowski, Partner/Managing Director; Daniel Hong,
Project Manager; Marta Pavone-Vasquez, Designer
THE CONCEPT: The structural configuration of molecular compound models. (Hint: It’s named
after John Dalton, the modern father of atomic theory). “For this multi-functional gathering
space, we started our creative process by examining the basic building blocks of design,
specifically the ways in which simple elements come together to create a complex experience.
That made us think of DNA and the linking of atoms and bonds. And that, in turn, suggested
the idea of using asymmetrical synergy throughout the space with elements such as the large
geometrical structures that frame the bar and seating areas.”
THE BEST PART: “We leveraged the creative freedom to develop a very strong visual
language that translated to all aspects of the design. We made sure that the molecular
concept was woven throughout the structure, the bar, the furniture and even the materials,”
says Jakubowski. “The key was having the BDNY team match us with the right [product]
designers to help deliver our vision. Once the right partners came together, it was clear we
were working toward a common goal. The whole process was thoroughly collaborative.”
THE “AHA!” MOMENT: “We discovered that it’s difficult to be your own client because of
the temptation to second guess decisions,” says Jakubowski. “But we also discovered a
manufacturer who premade angled joints, which allowed us to reduce costs without sacrificing
design integrity or quality.”
THE TAKEAWAY: “A space of this size risks feeling claustrophobic if the walls are dark or
overbearing. We constructed large structures that are open to the light while creating unique
seating zones,” says Jakubowski. “It was also a reminder that designers have to create photoworthy spaces that will drive interest on social media.”
