Scandinavian Christmas Market
The second Scandinavian Christmas Market was held on
Sunday 4th November. This was a much anticipated event
after last year’s successful debut. We were able to secure
almost all of our favorite stall holders from last year and
then had some exciting new ones on board, too. One of
those was Danish pastry chef, Kristina Jensen who owns
Elske Cafes, in Newmarket and Takapuna. I was so delighted
to have Kristina participate this time and had managed
to talk her into making tebirkes, and those, together with
all the other delicious pastries and rye bread she brought
along, were soon sold out! Make sure you pay a visit to
Kristina’s stall next year…. I am allocating her lots
more space!
We also had the welcome addition of gløgg, this time,
to complement the super popular aebleskiver. Another
fantastic addition was the beautiful dinning marquee,
generously provided and erected by Larry King. This
created a very festive market atmosphere out in the
courtyard. Another member, Heidi Wilson provided us with
10 large trestle tables which was a huge help in easing the
demand for tables.
Two new stall holders was Safka and Swenz. Safka filled
the entire corner of the hall with an amazing selection of
Scandinavian food and delicacies. Swenz made the trip all
the way from Wellington to be at the market! They brought
with them a selection of beautiful Swedish products,
(including their 3 children), and created a lovely Swedish
stall in a gazebo, outside. Be sure to visit the Safka and
Swenz’s websites to view their full range.
It’s difficult to judge exactly, without doing a head count,
but it definitely felt like there were bigger crowds this year,
so thank you to everyone who helped advertise this event.
There is a huge amount of work involved in organizing
the Julemarked, and it simply wouldn’t be possible without
many helpers….so thank you so much to all of you, to those
who helped setting up and the stall holders for cleaning up
afterwards. What a great team!
It’s so rewarding to see this event become so popular and
see members of all ages eagerly participate in it. Of course
even the most well planned things have hiccups… and we
have had a few, but we are gaining invaluable experience
and improving every time.
Lastly, a huge thank you to Allan
Winter and Danske Moebler, for their
generosity in allowing us to use their
van to transport trestle tables.
I wish you all a very Happy
Christmas and a safe, relaxing holiday.
Glaedelig Jul og Godt Nyt Aar.

Christmas Dinner Party 2012
Our last Social for the year was the Julefrokost or
Christmas Dinner Party on Saturday 17th November. It
may have seemed a little too early to celebrate Christmas,
but everyone got into the spirit quickly enough as the
“julestemning” was provided by the delightful Nordicinspired Christmas decorations and gløgg with pebernødder
to create a festive atmosphere.
After a special welcome was made by Inger to guests
from the Danish Church Abroad, our live musicians for the
evening – Martin Driessen and Gayle – continued to sing
and play easy-listening tunes in the background whilst
the 70 guests attentively selected from the beautifully

presented smørrebrødsbakker. Each tray refilled until no
more could be eaten. In between bites, the music couldn’t
stop some avid dancers from making the most of the dance
floor and before dessert arrived, more couples were up and
dancing to old favourites. Of course, no Julefrokost would
be complete without Ris a l’amande, kaffe og brunkage; and
so it was that Social number 1112 ended on a warm and
Chrismassy note.
Thanks to Committee and Socials Sub-committee
members for their assistance pre- and post-party.
Til alle, ønsker vi en rigtig God Jul og et Godt Nyt År,
Med venlig hilsen, Socials Sub-committee

Danish/NZ History - Skudsmaalsbog
As a clothing buyer for Hallenstein Brothers in Dunedin in
the late 60’s I would often visit different branches throughout
New Zealand. On one visit to Blenheim I met a man of
Danish descent who wanted me to translate his grandfather’s
skudsmaalsbog. This is the letter he wrote to me.
Kind regards, Oluf P Basse
Innes R. Simonsen, 80 Dillons Point Road, Blenheim
11 Nov. 1972
Dear Peter
To continue our ‘conference’ in HB’s Blenheim staff tea
room on 8th Nov:Firstly, I trust that the birthday telephone call ‘home’ to
Denmark from Nelson on the occasion of your Father’s 70th
birthday was clear and satisfactory. The old chap would get
a ‘great kick’ to hear your voice from 12,000 miles away.
Secondly I have to thank you for jacking up those blue
shorts for me at Nelson. My wife (Pamela) said they were
good quality and value - so ‘everybody’ was pleased!
Circa 1862 Skudsmaalsbog booklet: Servants Conduct Book
Herewith are the Photostat copy sheets of same, together
with a copy of your 8.11.72 pencil notes. I’m hopeful that
you will be able to decipher the last paragraph of page 7 in
particular as this will be the only and earliest information
that I have concerning my father’s father (Rasmus Neilsen
Simonsen). My father Neil Rasmus Simonsen was born in
Marlborough (New Zealand) on 7th July 1883 and died
September 1963. He knew only a few Danish words and
sentences and could not read the ‘Skudsmaalsbog booklet’
of course. Rasmus N Simonsen came to New Zealand with
his wife and three children in 1874 and he was a farrier with
the Danish artillery in the Schlesweig-Holstein war (186064) but I do not know how long he served in this war. If he
were born in 1845 he would be only 15 years old in 1860, so
I think he may have served about a year in it…?
Rasmus N.S. first went to a sawmill in the Pelorous sound
in 1874, and was taught English by an old Scottish couple
(Duncan’s) there. He left there and leased land from the
last ‘old timer’ Maori chief HEMI WHIRO at Canvastown.
The rent was paid half yearly in goods (livestock and food)
at a general gathering and feast, at which old granddad
would wrestle the young bucks! The lease lasted for 20
years (no written agreement) and granddad is buried feet
to feet with the old chief at Te Hora just ½ a mile from the
leased land, which was the old TAITUKU Pa. This Pa had
been abandoned by the Tribe years earlier on account of an
outbreak of cholera or typhoid.
Canvastown (5,000 Canvas Tents) sprang up as a result of

the WAKAMARINA gold rush of 1864. The Wakamarina River
joins the Pelorous River at Canvastown and then flows into
the head of Pelorous Sound at Havelock. (The Taituku Pa
was situated at the confluence of the W & P Rivers).
Old granddad used to ‘put up’ all the itinerant parsons at
his home and shoe their horses etc. Grandma ‘changed’ her
religion to that of the Parson in residence at the moment!
Grandad didn’t have much time for the Parsons apart from
the Mormon ones who would give a day or two of their
labour in exchange for the hospitality. One C/E Parson once
offered his thanks for old Rasmus for shoeing his horses,
but Rasmus said “Never mind the bloody tanks – dat will be 5
shillings”. This sentence is still one of our family sayings!
Old Rasmus loved horses as did my ‘old man’ (Neil) and
Dad also learned the blacksmith trade and ran a business
for two years when I was 7 (1926). Most of his life he farmed
– a ‘cow cocky’! Dad read a lot – particularly the Socialist
writers – Jack London, Upton Sinclair and H G Wells etc. He
became somewhat disillusioned during the period (196063) at the end of his life. He reckoned that “the working
class could not stand prosperity…once a worker has a few
quid in the bank, then he becomes a capitalist keen on the
10% interest racket”. Dad was a delegate to the 1940 Labour
Party conference and came away from it ‘spitting sparks’
on account of the unjust expulsion from the Labour Party
of John A Lee who is still alive in Auckland and writing at
this time. His books ‘Children of the Poor’ and ‘Civilian into
Soldier’ are worth reading.
I have rambled somewhat away from Rasmus N. S and
better let you attack the ‘Skudsmaalsbog’ instead, with that
Danish Dictionary of yours.
Best Wishes, Innes Simonsen
Skudsmålsbog, literally
“character book” or
“conduct book”.
The regulation for
skudsmålsbøger was issued
on September 5, 1832 for
domestic workers. The
book was generally issued
at confirmation. When a
domestic worker moved to
a new town or parish, the local police or parish
priest would sign the book, and when leaving a position, the
master would attest the employment dates and wage (until
1867, he could also write a note about the quality of work). If
the servant lost the book, he or she would be fined.

New Danish Honorary Consul appointed for the
South Island
The Ambassador of Denmark to New Zealand, Mr.
Børge Petersen visited Christchurch this week to bid
farewell to the outgoing Honorary Consul General
of Denmark for the South Island, and to welcome his
replacement.
At a luncheon on November 6, 2012 the
Ambassador announced the appointment of Mr.
Palle Petersen as new Honorary Consul of Denmark
in Christchurch for the South Island. Consul Palle
Petersen succeeds Dr. Jørgen Schousboe, who has
requested to be relieved from his honorary position.
Presenting Her Majesty’s Letter of Royal Demission
the Ambassador expressed his sincere appreciation to
the outgoing Consul General Dr. Jørgen Schousboe
for his nearly 25 years of dedicated service.
As successor Her Majesty has appointed Mr.
Palle Petersen as the Honorary Danish Consul in
Christchurch. Mr. Petersen is a Dane who has lived in
New Zealand for the past 24 years. He was transferred
to New Zealand by his employer – the Danish
company Bloch & Behrens, a wool trading company,
supplying New Zealand wool to manufacturers
world wide.
Palle is the General Manager of Bloch & Behrens,
now the export arm of PGG Wrightson’s wool division.
He is married to Rachel – a New Zealander, and they
have 3 teenage daughters: Emma, Sophie and Pia.
From left to right: New Honorary Consul of Denmark in Christchurch,

and outgoing Consul General Dr. Jørgen Schousboe.
Following the loss of their home on Mt Pleasant,
Christchurch in the February 2011 earthquake the
family is currently living in Methven, Mid Canterbury.
Therefore, in the interim, the Consulate will be located
in the offices of PGG Wrightson Wool.
Palle Petersen looks forward to continue developing
the excellent relations between New Zealand and
Denmark and the citizens of both countries. The
Consulate invites all Danes living in the South Island
to register their email details with the Consulate to
better facilitate communication.

Desperately looking for work
Reidar, a Dane living in Auckland with his
New Zealand wife, is looking for work.
He has worked in Denmark and Norway for many
years as a construction worker and welder for which
he is also formally trained and qualified.
A back injury a few years back means he can no
longer do as much physical work, but he still has a
real “can-do” attitude, is very good with his hands,
and will have a go at almost anything.
If anyone in the Danish Society thinks they can help,
please contact Reidar for a full CV and a chat by
writing to [email protected]

We need your help!
at the next Valhalla Working Bee
9th-10th March, 2013
We are seeking your support to carry out a whole range of jobs, both indoors and
outdoors. There is always house-cleaning to do as well as weeding etc. Any help is
welcome. Lunch is supplied by the society, therefore we need to know the number of
participants by Wednesday, 6th March.
If you are able to help in any way, please contact
Palle Olsen on 09 416 8822, 021 255 0911 or [email protected]
From the Valhalla Booking Officer
We still have four days available over the summer
holidays from the 13th – 16th January. I have a family
who would love to go up but at the moment only
need three rooms. That means there are four rooms
still available, it would be a shame to have empty
rooms over such a peak time. First in first served for
these four rooms.
Due to the outcome of the AGM I am now President
of the Danish Society for one year. This means that I
am now seeking a new Valhalla Booking Officer. If this
is something you would like to take on please let me
know. After eight years of looking after the bookings
and working with the sub-committee to help take
care of this property, passing this job to another
member will be bitter sweet as I have enjoyed my
involvement in this role very much.
There are no more working bees until 2013 so now
it is the responsibility of the members staying to keep
an eye on things for us and advise me if any work
needs attending urgently. With so many people using
Valhalla over December and January the property can
begin to look a little unloved by the end of summer
without the monthly working bee to spruce things up
therefore anything you think needs attending I would
like to hear about it either by phone and/or through
the arrival and departure book.
The gas bottles will need refilling at some point
during the summer holidays; this can be done with

swap-a-bottle at the Leigh garage. The rubbish is
collected Tuesday morning at the gate behind the
green shed; remember to have your rubbish out
ready for collection.
Thank you for the members who have
participated in the working bees,
your contribution is very much
appreciated.
Have a wonderful Christmas; enjoy
your summer holidays with family
and friends and I look forward to
catching up with you in 2013.
