Grid Portrait Enlargement
Objectives:
Introduce artist Chuck Close
o Brief biographical information
o The artist’s style, technique, and artistic goals
o Be able to recognize this artist’s style when compared to other works
Select an appropriate image: portrait, close-up, face must be at least 4” tall
Accurately draw a grid on the image (½” or 1” depending on image size)
o Ruler measurement
Accurately draw a grid on the project paper (approx. 3” depending on image size and chosen
media)
o Ruler measurement
Accurately replicate contour lines from original image to project enlargement
o Review definition of contour line
Effectively fill in values based on the original image
o Develop pencil control
o Review definition of value
Extension: use gridded color or texture in addition to give the figure value
o Chuck Close style – gridded color
o Realistic color with pastels or colored pencils (option to use toned paper)
