The CiRCE Institute’s Summer Institute – a week-long seminar on a Great Book – will be held at the beautiful Chetola Resort. The text

The institutes are geared towards social studies, history, and English/language arts teachers for grades 6-12. Teachers of other
subjects or grades may be considered if space is available. Teachers will: gain expertise from museum educators, curators, and
content experts, through gallery talks, discussion groups, and hands-on activities; learn to use American art in the classroom to foster
critical thinking skills and deepen student engagement with content; make interdisciplinary connections among American art, social
studies, history, and English/language arts. The cost of the program is $200, due upon registration. This non-refundable fee covers
the cost of your take-home materials as well as daily breakfast and lunch. Participants are responsible for travel and lodging costs. The

The fifteen days of class at the Dallas Institute includes breakfast, lunch, and snacks, all books and reading materials, lectures,

last five days given to a study of two novels for the purpose of demonstrating the way in which the tragic and comic genres may be

David D. and Rosemary H. Coffin Fellowship for Travel in Classical Lands

In 2016 the Society for Classical Studies (SCS) will again award the David D. and Rosemary H. Coffin Fellowship for study and travel
in classical lands. The Fellowship is intended to recognize secondary school teachers of Greek or Latin who are as dedicated to their
students as the Coffins themselves by giving them the opportunity to enrich their teaching and their lives through direct acquaintance
with the classical world. Selection will be made by the Coffin Fellowship Committee on the basis of written applications. The amount of

Summer Institute: The View from a Distance: Perspectives on the Greeks & Romans from across Space and Time

A series of workshops, lectures, and classes for the enrichment of classicists and classics enthusiasts. The CANE Summer Institute
will explore Classical Greek and Roman worlds from the perspectives of outsiders — in both space and time. They will consider the
views and responses to Greece and Rome by contemporaneous “others” from around the ancient world, as well as reactions and
adaptations of Greek and Roman culture in later literature and physical art. Tuition is $250, which covers a morning course and an

Conventiculum Dickinsoniense and Summer Latin Workshop
Carlisle, PA (Conventiculum Dickinsoniense: July 5-11, Prudentius’ Psychomachia Workshop: July 12-17)

The Conventiculum Dickinsoniense is an immersion seminar designed for all cultivators of Latin who wish to acquire some ability at
ex-tempore expression in Latin. They will experience Latin conversations on topics ranging from themes in literature and art all the
way to the routines and activities of daily life and will enjoy the benefits of reading and discussing texts in the target language. No
previous experience in speaking Latin is necessary. For the Summer Latin Workshop, the text will be Prudentius’ “Psychomachia.”
This miniature epic of 915 hexameter lines dramatizes the “Battle of the Soul,” pitting colorful and articulate dramatizations of the
virtues and vices in mortal combat. For either program, the $300 fee includes lodging in a single room in campus housing (and please
note that lodging will be in a student residence near the site of the sessions), two meals (breakfast and lunch) per day, as well as the

Caesar in Gaul is a two-week seminar designed to enhance participants’ appreciation of Julius Caesar and the Bellum Gallicum.The
program includes lectures and seminars led by top scholars who are reshaping the field of Caesar studies today, as well as visits to
key sites of the Gallic Wars and other important monuments of Gallo-Roman culture. The first week of the program, focusing on Caesar
as a man of letters and the monuments of the Roman provincia, takes place in Aix-en-Provence. In the second week, participants will
travel to Lyon and Burgundy for a closer look at Gallic Culture and battle sites from the Bellum Gallicum. The cost of Caesar in Gaul
is $3500. This amount includes tuition, housing, site visits, course materials, ground transportation within France and some meals.
Airfare is not included. The Paideia Institute is able to offer a number of full and partial scholarship to students with financial need.

Greek Studies on Site is a center for the study of Classical literature and culture. It offers a series of seminars in collaboration with the
Norwegian Institute at Athens. Its programs are open to students of Classics, Philosophy, History, and related disciplines, as well as
adult learners with an interest in Ancient Greek culture. Greek Studies on Site offers 3-week intensive summer courses for students
with a special interest in Greek literature, as well as winter seminars for those interested in exploring Greek culture. Courses are
taught by Ph.D.s and M.A.s in Classics and Philosophy, and take place either within Greek archaeological sites or at the Norwegian
Institute at Athens. The cost for the program is 1,995 euros, which includes tuition, accommodation, entrance to all sites and

Learning to Look: Summer Teacher Institute

The Summer Teacher Institute will take a broad look at the Portrait Gallery’s collection. During the Institute, the museum’s curators
and historians will provide in-gallery content lectures, introducing the collection. Utilizing an interactive approach, NPG educators
will model a variety of “learning to look” strategies—unique ways to hook and engage students when they look closely at portraits.
Participants will learn how to “read” portraiture and use the art as a springboard into a more in-depth discussion about biography
and history. Teachers in grades kindergarten-12 may apply as individuals or as part of a team. Priority will be given to social studies,
English/language arts, and visual arts teachers. To ensure participation, a nonrefundable program fee of $100 per person is due upon

American Bar Association’s Federal Trials and Great Debates in United States History

Designed especially for teachers of U.S. History, Government, Civics, and Law, the Federal Trials and Great Debates Summer Institute
deepens participants’ knowledge of the federal judiciary and the role the federal courts have played in key public controversies that
have defined our constitutional and other legal rights. Cases studied include The Sedition Act Trials, Olmstead v. United States, and The
Chicago 7 Conspiracy Trial. Participants work closely throughout the week-long Institute with leading historians, federal judges, and
curriculum consultants, focusing on three landmark federal trials through curriculum developed by the Federal Judicial Center. Last
year part of the agenda included a conversation with Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Lodging is arranged by the Institute and reasonable

The Institute includes sessions led by Supreme Court experts, journalists, authors, and attorneys, who give social studies educators
an in-depth understanding of how the Court chooses and decides cases and what it is like to argue before the Court. The Institute
covers six recent cases. This exciting opportunity culminates with a visit to the Supreme Court building to hear decisions handed
down and attend a private reception. The Institute prepares social studies educators to use and promote innovative teaching methods
with current and past cases. A $150 registration fee (due on Friday, April 21st) includes all materials and several meals. Participants
who conduct trainings for other teachers after completing the Institute are eligible to receive a stipend of $200. Participants are

Summer Workshops for Educators on Using Historical Documents in the Classroom

Teachers will explore a specific case study, with original documents in their archival holdings, that fits within the broader Taking a Stand
in History theme. Teachers will then identify between three and five items (documents, photos, maps, etc.) to scan and describe. The
National Archives will add these to the online tool for teaching with documents — DocsTeach.org — while participants are onsite.
During the workshop, teachers will produce a DocsTeach learning activity using these digitized primary sources. The fee for each of
the workshops is $100, which includes all materials. Participants will receive a stipend upon successful completion of the course.

Each summer, the Gilder Lehrman Institute offers forty academically rigorous Teacher Seminars for K–12 educators. Seminar topics

Monticello Teacher Institute: The Barringer Research Fellowship for Teachers of American History

The Monticello Teacher Institute (MTI) is an immersive professional development opportunity designed to provide social studies
teachers the opportunity to research and study at Monticello and the Jefferson Library in Charlottesville, Virginia. With the dual goal of
enhancing classroom teaching and contributing to the collection of digital resources available online at Monticello’s Digital Classroom,
teachers will collaborate on projects such as lesson plans, curricular units, resource packets, or other creative products rooted in
the history of the founding principles and their relevance today. Applicants will be chosen according to evidence of their success as
a teacher; demonstration that the fellowship will relate to the teaching skills and needs of the applicant; and the commitment and
qualifications of the applicant to undertake a concentrated study relating to the life and times of Thomas Jefferson, including basic
research skills, writing proficiency, and competency using digital education tools and technology. The Barringer Fellowship grant

humanities for the purpose of improving their understanding and knowledge of the peoples and cultures of other countries. Support is
generally made available through interagency agreements. The Department of Education transfers funds through the State Department
to Fulbright commissions in various countries to pay the costs associated with administering seminars. This partnership allows the

Thirty teachers from around the nation will be selected to participate in an intensive week-long seminar utilizing the vast resources of
the Museum, including the expertise of educators, curators, and historians to explore strategies for teaching the history of World War

development workshops. In July 2018, the cohort will reconvene in Normandy, France to explore firsthand the site of the 1944 D-Day

molecules. The workshop begins with an exploration of the basic principles of chemistry - the structure/function relationships which

Funded by the National Science Foundation, this six-week residential program for U.S. citizens gives teachers from across the country
the chance to participate in real-world science with MagLab scientists. Through weekly seminars, discussion groups, professional
development and technology workshops, teachers develop strategies and resources to translate the experience into material for their
classrooms. Each teacher accepted by the program receives a stipend ($3,600), classroom materials and, if necessary, travel support

The Science Communication Fellowship invites formal and informal educators to participate in the Nautilus Exploration Program as
communicators for ocean exploration sharing the excitement of exploration and research with students and public audiences in their
communities and around the world. The Science Communication Fellowship includes participation in a science communication
training workshop at the University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography in March 2017; experience sailing 1-3 weeks as
part of the exploration team on board an oceanographic expedition in the Eastern Pacific Ocean between May and September 2017; a
one-year commitment to collaborate with STEM professionals, educators, research scientists, and OET staff; the opportunity to develop
STEM-lessons for your educational audience based on the Nautilus experience; and access to Nautilus Exploration Program education
resources for your community. During and after their experience at sea, Fellows will work with members of the Nautilus Exploration

Participants will tour the telescopes, engage in discussions with the research astrophysicists in residence, and view nighttime

Each Institute week, Library of Congress education specialists facilitate sessions modeling strategies for using primary sources to
engage students, build critical thinking skills, and construct knowledge. Participants reflect on and discuss how the strategies apply
to their students, subject areas, and classrooms or school libraries. During the week, participants draw from among the millions of
digitized primary sources in the Library’s collections to design and refine a primary source activity to use with their students. While the
emphasis is on learning and applying teaching strategies, participants also have opportunities to meet experts from the Library and
possibly to research in the Library’s reading rooms to gather information and resources to use in developing their activities. Tuition and

From 2016: Rivers to Reefs Educators Workshop is a FREE six-day, jam-packed teacher’s workshop of fantastic field experiences and
empowering classroom lessons. The workshop begins in Atlanta with a visit to the Georgia Aquarium’s Learning Loop. The sixteen
participants follow the course of the Altamaha Watershed from its headwaters near the Georgia Aquarium to Gray’s Reef National
Marine Sanctuary with numerous field experiences along the way. The highlight of the workshop is an all-day trip to Gray’s Reef where
participants deploy and operate an ROV (remotely operated vehicle) to explore the reef without ever getting wet! Other field experiences
include training in water quality monitoring, a short canoe trip, a boat ride on the Altamaha River to explore the watershed that directly
influences Gray’s Reef, and a ferry ride over to Sapelo Island to explore the marshes and estuaries. More information will be posted in

STEMSS Institute (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, and Social Studies). Eight weekday sessions dedicated to content and
experiential learning in the areas of Earth and Space sciences, GeoSpatial technology, innovation, mathematics, and sustainability
among other STEMSS topics. There will be an emphasis on how to communicate what you have learned to others with the intention

biology, biotechnology, and genetics and diversity. Learning labs, field trips, discussions, and educational resources build on seminars
