Digital Photography - Photo Shoot
Tutor: Neil White
Week One (daytime)
Monday 17 - Friday 21 July
This course over 3 days will be a mixture of
practical photo shoots in various locations in
London, learning how to use your digital camera
effectively and critique sessions. Students will
come away with the necessary skills to fully
operate their digital camera and to take better
pictures along with exciting and dynamic pictures
of the city. Expert knowledge and tips will be given
from a professional photographer.
Drawing for Ceramics
Tutor: Jane Millar
This two day course aims to give students working
in ceramics an opportunity to develop new
inspiration and visual ideas about shape and
surface, including sketchbook development, which
can be taken on into their individual practice. It is
suitable for beginners and experienced potters to
develop their ceramic work through drawing.
Introduction to Drawing
Tutor: Sarah Sparkes
Good Artists Copy, Great Artists Steal
- Joan Eardley
Tutor: Ian Ellis
A structured course for students with little or no
drawing experience who would like to learn to draw
from observation. You will learn the basic principles
of drawing including perspective, how to create a
sense of scale and proportion, and convey volume
and space. You will be able to draw accurately
whilst developing a personal style and expression.
This course will focus on Joan Eardley’s atmospheric
gesture paintings of the NE coast of Scotland. The
aim of the course is to see how much Eardley’s
methods influence you when you create a
landscape painting of your own working from
photographs. How much can Eardley’s ability to
handle and manipulate paint whilst retaining a
sense of place help you to develop your own
painting skills?
Botanic Illustration
Tutor: Jaco Nel
This is a three-day workshop for students of
beginner to intermediate levels. We will be working
on a range of summer perennials, grasses, stems,
twigs and seed pods combined in a single work to
be completed over 3 days. The work will be
exploring buds, flowers, seeds or fruit as well as
foliage of varying shapes, sizes and textures as it
offers specific challenges in compositional interest
and complexity. Students can work in graphite, pen
and ink or watercolour.
Figure Drawing - Capturing Movement
Tutor: Graham Cole
A lively and entertaining course introducing
students to the dynamics of the moving figure using
life models and performers culminating in a day at
a performance venue. Students should have some
drawing experience and will be introduced to
exercises developing the appropriate mind-set prior
to depicting pure movement. Work in charcoal, soft
pencil, pastels, inks or water-based media.
Pottery Workshop - All levels
Tutor: Hazel Richards
Beginners to pottery will be shown hand- building
techniques and a chance to experience the potters’
wheel. Experienced students will be able to work
for 3 consecutive days on your own initiated
projects with the support of a very experienced
tutor. The course can also be used to realise
designs/ideas arising from the two day drawing for
ceramics course which precedes this one.
Drawing into Watercolour
Tutor: Shaun Carey
This course aims to develop your drawing abilities
further, which in turn will underpin both your
painting in watercolour. We will be exploring a
variety of subjects including still-life and landscape
through local outdoor visits.
2
Hidden or Revealed?
Drawing the Clothed Figure
Tutor: Annabel Cullen
Illustration Intensive
Tutor: Jane Porter
Published illustrator and author Jane Porter will
offer 3 intensive evenings experimenting with
different techniques to create your own
“Illustration Sampler”. Techniques will include
monoprinting, experimental watercolour, inks
collage and more! Suitable for all levels and ideal
for those wishing to expand their illustration
vocabulary.
A two-day drawing investigation for experienced
students into the way clothes both mask and
describe the body beneath. Making studies of
models, nude and clothed, each day you will
produce a full-length drawing in the media of your
choice: pencil, charcoal, chalk, pastels or coloured
pencils, ink and wash. Time will allow for building
up a full tonal study of the clothing, paying
attention to different fabric textures.
Modern Art Talks by Colin Pink
Talk 1: Marcel Duchamp the Master
Trickster of Modern art
Photo-Etching
Tutor: Ed Adlington
Genius or charlatan?
In this two-day course, students will explore the
possibilities of photo-etching - this is not the mere
reproduction of a photographic image, but a
process that can be used alongside others to
produce the final piece. You will combine photoetching and traditional etching techniques to
produce multiple works. This course will be ideal
for both new or experienced printmakers.
Talk 2: The Art of the Uncanny and the Abject
From the Symbolists to Jake and Dinos Chapman,
exploring the question “is there something
inherently uncanny about human existence?”
Talk 3: Francis Bacon Master of Disquiet
A new interpretation of one the most distinctive
voices in modern British art.
Week One (evenings)
Week Two
Monday 24 - Friday 28 July
Drawing with Colour
Tutor: Jane Millar
Life Drawing (two days with two models)
Tutor: Jan Malaszek
An opportunity for students to experiment and
observe, using different colour media. Working
from observation we will explore line and form,
transparency and detail, as well as layering in the
drawn colour image. Ideal for students looking for
ways to take drawings through to painting and
print. The final session provides an opportunity for
students to develop a personal project.
This two day course gives you the opportunity to
explore the dynamics and compositional
possibilities of working with two life models. Using
a variety of drawing media and working from poses
of various lengths you will focus on negative &
positive shapes, rhythms, mark making and the use
of dramatic lighting to create a range of drawings
on different surfaces and papers.
Oil Painting - Getting Started
Tutor: Shaun Carey
The course focuses on improving composition
control, including composing with line, light and
shade, and colour. Students can use their preferred
