In and Out
Have you ever wondered what would happen if we didn’t
have the sea? Well, the world would dry up. With no water we
can’t live.
Did you know that there are mountains and canyons in the
ocean? A computer called Echo Soundings found out that there
are canyons six times as deep as the Grand Canyon. There are
also mountains more than twice as tall as Mount Everest.
Wavy facts
Did you know
that there are
hills in the sea?

A Tsunami and a Hurricane
The ocean can cause destruction. Waves can create a big
deluge and crash into cities. But what is the cause of this?
Tsunamis can create great devastation. When an earthquake
happens under the ocean, it makes a big wave called a tsunami.
If the wave is close to shore it will cause a flood, destroying cities
and sometimes people die.
Hurricanes are also a cause of damage from the ocean.
Hurricanes are violent storms. They can push the water making
big waves. These waves can cause floods. Floods can make it
hard for people to survive if the people don’t have food or shelter.

floods can kill
thousands of people?

The Moon and the Tide
Wavy facts did you know
that if we did not have
gravity then we would fly
out into space swirling
around?
What is a tide? Tides are the rise and fall of the ocean. Tides
are caused by the gravitational pull of the sun and moon and the
rotation of the earth.
Tides have cycles. The cycles are caused by the moon rotating
the earth and the position of the sun changing. The ocean is
always rising and falling. The cycles are: 1) the sea levels rises 2)
high tide 3)sea level falls 4)low tide 5) repeats.
The location of the moon affects the tide the most. The gravity
(or pull) of the moon causes a high tide on the side of the earth
closest to it and on the opposite side. Low tides are on the sides
of the earth ninety degrees from the moon.

Amazing ocean Animals
How do fish live in the ocean? Some fish eat plants that grow
in the water. Bigger fish eat those fish. Then bigger fish eat those
fish. Than a colossal fish like a whale or a shark will eat that fish.
This is called the food chain.
Different ocean animals live at different levels of the ocean.
Most live at the top in the sunlit zone, such as minnows, krill,
sharks, whales, dolphins, etc. Other fish, like the giant squid, live
in the twilight zone where there is little light. Few animal life live
at the bottom in the midnight zone where it is cold and pitch-

The humpback anglerfish,
aka black sea devil, lives
deep in the ocean, so it
uses a light bulb to lure in
its prey.

OCEAN NEEDS HELP
You know that the ocean may cause a problem but did
you know the ocean has a problem too? If you see trash in
the ocean then you’ll know that people are polluting.
Pollution causes animals in the ocean to die. Pollution hurts
the ocean, the ocean life, the earth, and us. We can all do
our part to keep the ocean clean.
Wavy facts

A seal eating a plastic bottle.
A turtle with a plastic ring around him or
her.
Did you know that when people
throw cans into the ocean
sometimes little fish go in them
and get stuck and die? If they
can’t get food, they will starve,
and when they grow the cans will
choke them?
