What happened? Well, the State takes 10% right off the top so they can fund special Handicapped Projects at their level. This they have always done. We ordered 51 cases of tootsie rolls to the tune of $19.50 per case (24 were "sold" to sister councils who reimbursed us). Our street effort was supported by only two organizations this year. So we have about 20 cases left and they will be used next year as they do not spoil. That bill to State for 51 cases came to $994.50 (at least we got free shipping!). We experimented with mailing 500 appeals to all members of the FWB Chamber of Commerce. At least they now know about our drive, but only 2 contributions came in, just offsetting the cost of printing and bulk mailing ($322.00). A wash, financially. A pain, logistically. That left us with two donation checks sent from State, one to FWB Developmental Center for $1,074.98, and one to Silver Sands School for $268.75. This is in direct proportion to their street help. At the April business meeting, the Council voted to match each of these amounts, thereby doubling the contribution. Presentation checks w ill be given at a May meeting ( to be scheduled due to the election of officers). NEW MEMBERS: We welcome Brother Jim McDonough as a new 1st Degree member and Brother Trey Endt as a transferring 1st Degree member. We have three more candidates who have been signed up at either our St. Mary Parish Membership Drive or the Council Open-House. Our membership is expanding. A lesson learned from all these drives and open presentations is that is far easier to just ask one of your Catholic acquaintances to join us. The efforts described above take a lot of time and planning. I hope the payoff is in quality new members. A COUPLE OF MORE RULES FOR REACHI NG A GOOD OLD AGE: 1. Keep a healthy life with moderate exercise (like walking every day}, eat well and get your sleep. It's easy to become sick and it gets harder to remain healthy. Keep in touch with your doctor and get tested even when you are feeling well. Stay informed. 2. Always buy the best, most beautiful items for your significant other. The key goal is to enjoy your money with your partner. One day you will miss the other and the money will not provide any comfort then. Enjoy it together. HAPPY MOTHER's DAY! Next month will feature the BINGO wrap-up. Are you a “Knight-in-Name Only” or do you Keep the Shine in your Armor by participating in our activities? YBIC, Dick Olson, Financial Secretary 850-243-9328 [email protected] COLUMBIANS TRUSTEE REPORT Having secured the finances to have the big hall roof coated to stop leaks and further damage, I have had a brick wall. I have been unable to get anyone to do the work for a reasonable cost. Anyone who can do the work or knows someone who can do the work, please contact me by phone at 850-225-0740 or by email at [email protected]. There are a number of projects that I will need help on in the next few months one of which is to refurbish the chairs in the large hall. New seat and back covers and painting of the chair frames. The tables need to be bleached and the frames need to be repaired (many screws have fallen out). The rear emergency door in the big hall needs to completely rebuilt or possible replaced. I will schedule a work Saturday in the coming weeks. Please come out and assist. This is a group effort not just one persons. PGK Tim Perks Trustee, (850) 225-0740, [email protected] 5 BENEFITS ADVISOR Retirement income you can count on. Guaranteed. What is it? An annuity is a retirement savings product. You make contributions, and, after a specified amount of time, the annuity pays you a regular income stream. Who needs it? There are few financial matters we give more thought and attention to than our retirement. Everyone thinks about it. Everyone needs it. Retirement annuities help you ensure that you have enough money to live on in retirement. But retirement income can be a difficult thing to calculate, especially with a changing landscape of federal and employee-provided benefits. With a properly structured retirement annuity from the Knights of Columbus, you can have retirement income that you cannot outlive, guaranteed. Retirement annuities provide security and peace of mind that people of all ages and financial circumstances can benefit from. How does it work? Knights of Columbus retirement annuities come with many different payment and plan types (see below) which determine the nature of the annuity. Once established, the money within a Knights of Columbus annuity continues to earn value, before eventually disbursing according to the options that you elect. Knights of Columbus annuities also come with two important guarantees. First, with a Knights of Columbus annuity, your principal is guaranteed. Regardless of market condition or company results, your Knights of Columbus annuity will not lose value. Second, each Knights of Columbus annuity comes with a guaranteed minimum interest rate. No matter the market fluctuations, your annuity is guaranteed to never earn less than the contractually stated amount on an annual basis. What options do I have? Payment Type There are three payment types for Knights of Columbus annuities: Single Premium Annuity – You make a single, lump-sum payment that accrues interest until you elect to begin withdrawals. Flexible Premium Annuity – Premium payments can be made on a regular or irregular basis. We encourage Electronic Transfer of Funds (EFT) with the frequency of payments determined by you. In addition, you have the option to choose your payment schedule. Single Premium Immediate Annuity – Purchased with a single payment, it begins to pay out immediately. 6 Plan Types In the United States, the Knights of Columbus annuities have three available plans: Non-Qualified Annuity Traditional Individual Retirement Annuity Roth Individual Retirement Annuity The Knights of Columbus also offers Tax Sheltered Annuities (TSA) and Simplified Employee Pension (SEP) options. Contact Tim Pugh, your Knights of Columbus field agent, at 850-678-0962 or [email protected], today to learn more about our retirement annuities, and about the safety and security that we can help provide. Steve Williams, Grand Knight, 850-225-6705, [email protected] - NO REPORT KNIGHTS HEALTH CORNER Brothers All a little information about Heat, Heat Waves Excessive heat has caused more deaths than all other weather events, including floods. A heat wave is a prolonged period of excessive heat, generally 10 degrees or more above average, often combined with excessive humidity. Forecasts will be: 7 · Excessive Heat Watch - Conditions are favorable for an excessive heat event to meet or exceed local Excessive Heat Warning criteria in the next 24 to 72 hours. · Heat Advisory - Heat Index values are forecasting to meet locally defined advisory criteria for 1 to 2 days (daytime highs= 100-105° Fahrenheit). · Excessive Heat Warning - Heat Index values are forecasting to meet or exceed locally defined warning criteria for at least 2 days (daytime highs= 105-110° Fahrenheit). Before · Listen to local weather forecasts and stay aware of upcoming temperature changes. · Be aware of both the temperature and the heat index. · Discuss heat safety precautions with members of your household. What To Do During a Heat Wave · Listen to a NOAA Weather Radio for critical updates from the National Weather Service (NWS). · Never leave children or pets alone in enclosed vehicles. · Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids even if you do not feel thirsty. Avoid drinks with caffeine or alcohol. · Eat small meals and eat more often. · Avoid extreme temperature changes. · Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, light-colored clothing. · Slow down, stay indoors/avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest part of the day. · Postpone outdoor games and activities. · Use a buddy system when working in excessive heat. · Take frequent breaks if you must work outdoors. · Check on family, friends and neighbors who do not have air conditioning, who spend much of their time alone or who are more likely to be affected by the heat. PGK Tim Perks, Faithful Navigator, 850-225-0740, [email protected] SPRING FLING CHAIRMAN I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many people who help in the Pizza Booth at this years St. Mary Spring Fling. Many of you may not know, but in past years pizzas have come pre-made and all we did was put on peperoni or more cheese. This year, Ryan changed up things by ordering from a distributer that provided pre-baked pizza crusts, pizza sauce and cheese. We made the pizzas from scratch at the booth. We even introduced a vegetable pizza on Friday, a day in lent, and a supreme type pizza. From the feed-back I received (and of course, tasting them) people really enjoyed our pizza. We sold more whole pizzas than in past memory. I have not heard from Ryan at the PLC whether making the pizzas was cost effective or not, but I expect to know soon. A special thanks goes out to two of our wives that spend many hours making pizzas behind the booth under our canopy. They were Kathy Waldrop and Sue Arnold, who without them, the pizzas may or may not have been so good. As so thanks to PGK Jay Arnold and DGK Detley Waldrop for assisting their respective wives in making the pizzas. As always, thanks to the “snow cone brigade”, especially Bill Reaves, Jerry Finelli, PFN Jerry Vaughan Jr, Joe Cormier, Dominick Fiorentino and too many others like Emil Pagliari, PGK Gil Halliday, Greg Fox, Henri Faccini, John Lucenti, and Bob Brady. If missed anyone please forgive me, there were so many of you. To all my brothers, thanks for making this years St. Mary Spring Fling a success. PGK Tim Perks, Spring Fling Chairman 12
