Year 7-11 - Bournemouth University

Year 7-11
Welcome to our programme of free activities for schools, academies and
colleges. We offer interventions covering information, advice and guidance,
higher education and a subject specific focus. We may be able to support some
of your travel costs and additional support for targeted schools and students.
All about uni talk
Our Student Ambassadors will deliver this fastpaced, interactive talk looking at what higher
education is and how to get there in a way that
is accessible for the audience.
Animation workshop
Students design their own BB8 robot and
produce an animated story or character
in small groups. This workshop combines
computer skills with art, storytelling
and imagination.
Assorted Lego®
robotics workshops
Students will solve challenges using their
programming, engineering and design skills.
We run a number of different workshops on a
variety of themes. Open to Years 7 - 11.
Books & Stories scheme
The scheme pairs our Student Ambassadors
with small groups who need some extra help
to achieve in Key Stage 2 reading. Weekly
sessions focus on guided reading and fun
activities to support reading development.
Choosing options Drama:
Keys to success
We sponsor Enact Solutions to deliver their
drama performance. The production is
designed to inspire and promote the benefits
of choosing the right GCSE options and
continued learning post-16.
Festival of Learning
Health & Wellbeing Day
This day is all about improving wellbeing
and health. Your students will do something
they have never done before whether that be
Raveminton, Kung Fu, or Bollywood dancing.
Get set scheme
We sponsor Young Enterprise to deliver this
hands-on scheme, which aims to support
young people in taking steps to get ready
for their future careers. Students learn from
business and industry representatives, as well
as current students.
Healthcare workshop
Designed to incorporate not only the well
known Health & Social Care fields, such as
nursing and social work, but to also include
occupational therapy and paramedic science.
HE Experience Day
Students get a real taste of uni life, including
information on finance, a campus tour, group
work activities and Q&A session with Student
Ambassadors. Talk to us if you’d like to bring
other year groups or open up this visit to more
than 60 students.
Information, Advice &
Guidance interviews
Our fully qualified and impartial Careers
Adviser can provide group work and individual
sessions for high priority students. Please
contact us to discuss your needs.
Mentoring scheme
Summer Breaks
BU Student Mentors act as role models,
working with small groups of students
to develop their skills and confidence in
preparation for further and higher education.
An opportunity for your students to experience
university life and includes a number of
subject workshops plus social and sports
events for them to enjoy as part of their
four-day/three-night residential stay.
Parents evening talk
Tank Museum Lego® robotics
engineering challenge
We can give higher education talks aimed
at parents/carers at parents evenings
or other events.
Revision skills with parents/carers
An interactive workshop aimed at parents/
carers - and their children - helping them give
the right support during the run-up to exams.
This is a fun session, which takes places at
school in the evening.
ScratchJam
Students create games on an unknown
theme using Scratch programming software.
Competition between schools is tough so it
is a great challenge for students with strong
computer skills.
Soap workshop
The cosmetic industry is an ideal example to
demonstrate the close ties between science
and business. Students will create their own
soap design and learn the chemistry behind
soap and the diversity of STEM careers.
Stepping up
This workshop focusses on introducing
students to research and independent learning
skills as they move on to 6th Form or prepare
for higher education.
Student life and finance talk
Provides a broad overview of higher education,
student life and finance, plus the opportunity
to hear from current students.
Held at The Tank Museum in Bovington,
students work in teams of six to design and
build a programmable robot to tackle our
unique tank obstacle course.
Tutoring scheme
Our Student Ambassadors and Mentors
can provide additional support in English,
Maths, Science and other subjects. Talk to us
about your needs.

Students will become forensic investigators
for the day working to solve the murder of
Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. This day
encompasses many forensic techniques from
looking at fingerprints to detecting poisons.
Work experience scheme

placements, typically lasting one week. These
are advertised through Education Business
Partnership (www.ebpnational.org.uk) or

BU Insight Days
15-17 November 2016
and 5-8 June 2017
Our BU Insight Days have
a subject-specific focus
and are excellent if your
students have a clear idea
of the subject area they’d
like to study at university.
However, they are also a
great way to inspire your
learners if they have yet to
narrow down their options;
giving them an insight
into what studying at
university is like.
Please get in touch if the
dates aren’t suitable as we
can organise something
bespoke for you.
