Children in year 5 added and subtracted fractions with the same denominator. Some children
used visual images to support this.
Then children moved on to adding and subtracting fractions where the denominators were
doubled or halved.
Finally the children added and subtracted fractions where the denominators shared a common
multiple. The children had to list the multiples of each denominator to find the common
denominator. Some children used visual images to support this.
Mastery was shown at each stage before children moved on, for example letters replaced
numbers in some fractions and children had to identify what number the letter represented.
