International Student - St Peter`s College Palmerston North

JUNE
TERM 2
2015
2015 has been very busy with many new International Students arriving to spend time with us at St Peter’s
College so far we have welcomed 21 new students from
China, Japan, South Korea and Thailand, across a range
of Year levels. Ms Mollard and I have been working hard
to help them settle in well, both at school and in their
Homestays. Thanks to the International Committee this
year, they are organizing some great activities as a way
for our students to share their
cultures. I encourage
everyone to join in and enjoy themselves!

Kia ora!
I am the Assistant International Director at St Peter’s College. I LOVE travel
which is why I love that I can be part of our International Department. I have
traveled to 30 different countries around the world and it is so interesting getting
to know the students of different cultures. I thoroughly enjoy helping them to
get acquainted with their life in Aotearoa. It’s fun being a part of the continual
development of our department.
Highlights for me are (slowly) learning basic phrases in many languages and
learning a bit about my students’ cultures. I also enjoy having our C2S mentor
programme. Each term I meet with our students one to one and set their goals.
We discuss what they have achieved so far and where they would like to head
for their future. It is also great to see our international students compete in all of
our various house competitions. They totally embrace life at St Peter’s College,
whether they are here for 10 weeks, or several years.
Our International department are very supportive of each other and I enjoy seeing our students develop their friendships - not only through other international
students but in our wider school community.
I hope that I can be a part of our St Peter’s College International Department for
many years to come :)
Ms. Michelle Mollard
Assistant International Director

ORIGINS
by ASATO OGAWA
TOKYO is the capital of Japan. The population of Tokyo is 3 times bigger than
NZ. If you come to Japan, you will be surprised because there are many tall
buildings. Also, there are many interesting places to go to that you need time to
visit. Tokyo is amazing!
SHINJUKU, TOKYO, JAPAN
Did you hear about this Tokyo’s people are very busy. This is correct because my
school begin at 8 o’clock,we have to take 7 classes every day. We come back
home at nearly 6 p.m!(If there is no sports club.) But we enjoy the weekends
and holidays in Tokyo. There are many places that we enjoy. For example, if I
have some spare time,I would go to an amusement park or do some shopping.
Also, most people have religions in Japan. We believe in Buddhism or Shinto.
Buddhism believes the Buddha. Shinto became independent in Japan.
Shinto respects everything because Shinto thinks that god exists in everything. But now, young people do not believe this.
So we can combine many religions events. For example, we have Christmas,we go to Shinto shrines in new year and if
some people die, we hold Buddhism funerals.
There are many interesting places in Japan. These places can touch culture and be enjoyable places. Especially, Tokyo has
many interesting place. is famous for manga(Comic) and animation. We can buy new things. Ginza is a good place to shop
and eat in Japan. And if you want to touch Japanese culture, you should go to Asakusa. Asakusa is an old city in Tokyo. You
can see big temples. But this city is developing because Tokyo Sky Tree built in Asakusa. Sky tree is 2 times taller than Sky
tower. So,we can see old buildings and new buildings.
Conclusion,Tokyo has many different attractions.I see that Japan and NZ are different because I am doing an exchange
experience in NZ now and learning in NZ. If you come to Japan you will enjoy it :D My hometown LanZhou is the capital and largest city of Gansu Province in
by JESSICA NI
Northwest part of China. The Yellow river which is the second longest river called
“ The Mother River” flows through from west to east. LanZhou is the cultural centre of Gansu, it is home to many different groups and their respective cultures.
The most prominent three groups are the Han, Hui and Zhang.
The public transportation of LanZhou is convenient and LanZhou Railway station
is a major railway hub of Northwest. LanZhou is a beautiful, modern and historic
city. The Five Spring Mountain Park, the Yellow River Bridge, Baita Mountain
Park have many sights that are worth visiting. Especially the Yellow River Bridge.
It has connected the Ming Dynasty when people began to envisage such a crossing to conquer the Yellow River.
LANZHOU, GANSU, CHINA
LanZhou is also a city famous for delicious and have traditional food. LanZhou food belongs to Long Cuisine. LanZhou
people have noodles food as their favorite food. Hand pulled noodles with beef, also called LanZhou Bree Beef Noodle is
one of the most common dishes in the local area.Visitors can see it at every corner and it has become a part of the local
people’s life. Except this one, Lao Zao, liang Pi, Hui DouZi and many local food include Hui Nationality food you can taste in
