Some proper nouns name days of the week, months, and holidays. The name of each day, month, or holiday begins with a capital letter. An abbreviation is a short form of a word. Most abbreviations begin with a capital letter and end with a period. Most titles of people are abbreviations. Always use an apostrophe to form a possessive noun. 1 Add an apostrophe (‘) and –s to a singular noun to make it possessive. Example: It is the boy’s cap. Add just an apostrophe to most plural nouns to make them possessive. Example: The boys’ hats were wet.
